  1. Congratulations Warren! It is a nice goal to have completed.
  2. Agree Leon, I am referring to a pointed obstacle in the river with an eddie. I always believed the current might be a little slower a few yards out from the top of an eddie. Could be wrong but I do know that it gives you a safety margin to get out a few yards. Less correcting strokes and distance from rocks etc. imo
  3. On the Piscataqua at max ebb it is not always a good idea to go to the other side unless you have back up and skills. The area where Pru is talking about has a lot of boils and rough water that can get you in trouble real quick. Boat wakes really kick the eddies and boils up. At some of the pinch points just try easing out into the main flow where the current may be running a little slower as long as you can avoid the channel.
  4. Done both ways and seen them fall apart very fast because people are not taught to keep their head on a swivel and pay attention to the group. Surprised no one has mentioned putting the slower paddler in front and no is to pass him/ her.
  5. Thanks all. Been reading reviews and will add some shortly. Marine Weather Plus looks great but reviews were a bit off. I'll check out Earth NC Marine tomorrow.. You know I did have a smart phone, now I have a really smart phone :^)
  6. Stepped into the modern times this week with a I5 smartphone. I would like some to chime in and let me know what they find to be the best apps for tides, surf and currents and anything else that might be good for sail, beach and kayaking related adventures. Did get magic seaweed. thanks,
  7. I have the Big Agnes 45 deg. synthetic , rectangular bag that has the pocket in the back for the pad. The bag has no insulated bottom. It is large and I use a smaller size pad 1-1/2 " thick pad for kayak camping. I save the large 2" pad for car camping only. The bag will compress down very small and you never slip off the pad. I have a fleece bag. I did not like commercial ones due to my size. I bought some fabric and enlisted my mother to sew (a lost art) up a custom size bag.
  8. Go see Ed at the Kayak Learning Center on the beach in Beverly Mass. He is the wing and ski go to guy in this area. He has a website that you can find.....http://kayaklearningcenter.com/
  9. I have used a utility knife (or box cutter) blade held with a pair of locking pliers over a flame. w/ block of wood for cutting on. Mostly I light the end and roll it under my shoe or pinch the flame in a rag.
  10. Spare me the drama. This is not the civil rights march. If you want to change the law work through the legislature. The property owners will want a tax break for land given up. I know I would. The statist will want to know who will make up the lost revenue that the towns will no longer get. Instant deadlock...... We all land on questionable spots from time to time but what we don't all do is go walking around above the high tide mark in someone's private spot.....K.I.S.S.-- and follow the money
  11. Eight of us went from Sandy Point to Lt Chebeauge and saw only a few other kayaks. Too windy for newbies to get near Jewell
  12. the fog comes in on little cat feet it sits looking over harbor and city on silent haunches then moves on. Robert Frost Hope I got it right or my HS poetry teacher will be upset...... How is that for a hijack?
  13. Gary, Believe it was my patch kit on Rogers boat. The best I have found is an ice and water shield, 4 inch by maybe 25 feet at HD. It is the detail product for around doors and windows. It is stickier than some of the stuff that comes in 4 foot rolls., Denso tape backed up on plastic is great to. Not sure where to find Denso. It is a English plumbers pipe wrap for temp. repairs I think. Even the bituthane tape would be better backed up with a plastic patch and screws. Nice to have enough duct tape to wrap around the boat but what if it is under your butt? A good trick is to put your patch and a drying rag/towell in a vacuum baggie--the kind you heat seal yourself.
  14. The latest: The is a cpr/ fa instructor in Greenland NH that runs classes called Coastal CPR. Just heard back from her and with a 4 person minimum we can run a class at $75 each. Dates she could do are Sat 5/4 sun 5/26 sun 6/9 sat 6/15 sundays are afternoon classes 5/26 is Memorial weekend........out Are there 4 or more that want to commit? Either day works for me....sooner the better due to summer coming. psylatmetrocastdotnet
  15. I took the 2 day solo class a few years ago. Very good and everyone should get one...Right now I can't commit two days to go over stuff I already know. The FA class is as you stated but needed to keep the certs...Review is always good for me.. Not all solo classes cover kayaking. Many of the BCU and ACA classes and tests I have taken covered many aspects of medical emergencies on the water. It does seem some want to push to online classes. The local hospital just mailed me back and they have you do an online course and then come in and do a demo for them to get your cert....
  16. Deb, Yes I get the AHA. When I got stuck a few years back the local hospital gave me the name of an instructor that they use. He ran it last time and I am trying to use him again. He is a full time fireman/ rescue type so his time is funky. I'll look up Just minutes away since I don't mind a little drive if the timing works. Really surprised that it is not easier to find. Several times my company paid instructors to come in and do a group. That was nice, easy and paid but in Nashua...but years ago.
  17. Rob, When I did the solo wfa, cpr was included. Have you checked? I do not have a date yet. Just know what days do not work and am waiting to hear from the instructor. If this falls through I know another instructor near Boston that might be able to do it. That would be closer for some...
  18. I need to update my first aid/cpr soon. I have an instructor lined up and want to know if there is interest by others in a class? It would be in or near Rochester NH as the instructor is Rochester FD. Most likely on a weekend. If anyone knows of a first aid cpr class that I can get into near the NH seacoast that would be great also. Have done the 2 day SOLO so that's not an option. Post or mail me at psylatmetrocastdotnet thanks, Paul
  19. All helpful information and with what I am learning I can say that the 851 is not a kayaker friendly GPS if it is text only, which it appears to be. (youtube). If you add a waypoint or have one in and there is no screen chart/display wouldn't it try to put you over an island to get to a waypoint? How would you (or it) know and display the jeddy or island between you and saftey? I prefer to see a map on a screen if given the choice. I do not carry a PLB so DSC would be an upgrade. Text only...marginal.. While this would give SOG it could be a pain and not as user friendy as a normal GPS.(.I think) My VHF is always in my pfd unless I am at the lake or doing some *onshore* surfing or rolling with a group. The battery life is a concern and would/ could be an issue on multi-day trips. Thanks to all. I am going to lok at the M92d and the M72. And a separate GPS. Anyone have a particular gps they like? waterproof, user friendly and priced somewhat low?
  20. I have to update my VHF this season (now) and am considering the Standard Horizon HX 851 with DSC& GPS. .Have read alot of the old NSPN threads, reviews , etc and being a semi Luddite I am not sure about a few things and want to pick some minds. 1, The GPS stores 200 waypoints and has a navigate to waypoint feature with compass. Does this mean it would be as usable as a regular GPS? Except that it is dual purpose and the screen my be smaller........ 2, Was not looking for a GPS now but figure this might help ease my way into the fray....Would I be better off just getting a GPS and a VHF and keeping them separate? Realize the battery would drain quickly with it on all the time but I keep mine off alot. Seems the DSC is worth getting and that puts you into a higher cost and for a few more you can have the GPS. thanks for any help and advice.
  21. Once saw two plastic rec kayaks still attached to the racks upside down on the side of 95 in Peabody. Nice little package....
  22. You could try my Explorer but it might be a couple weeks before I can free up time to get out. If you want to come take it for a day I am 30 mins up from Portsmouth.
  23. The sailboats are Cape Cod Frosties. Mostly larger sailboat owners who get bored from what I've heard. The river is a great play spot but....Beware of the wind against the flow, boat wakes going through the boils and the eddy lines that can catch an edge. I need to get out there very shortly...kind of neat to see those large mooring balls getting pulled under.
  24. I think I have a set that fit my 95 Ford Explorer. They fit a channel in the roof....don't know the number. If you think they would work you can have them.
