  1. Best tides races in NE are off Groton and Stonington CT. Fishers, Sugar Reef, Wicopissat. Well worth the drive and effort. Probably less drive time than Popham.
  2. Wednesday 7/25 the tall ships parade (3??)starts up the river at 10 am. They are trying to get a flotilla of boaters involved and build hype. So I'll be launching at 9 am from Odiorne in Rye. Plan is to go CC around Newcastle and up the river to downtown. Maybe 8 -10 miles, depending on circumstances w/ breaks, cameras, easy... Tide will be flooding and there may be some wakes and rougher stuff near shore. I'll be watching the weather also. Put in Rye NH at Odiorne boat launch ramp. 9AM BIB. Off by 2-3 max Please be up for level 3 conditions. There is an iron ranger pay station (maybe 4.00??) that sometimes has envelopes. Please make a token donation if you use and enjoy this ramp. Post here and PM me with e-contact and vitals, thxs, Paul
  3. There are two current play spots there. One is between Wood and Pond south of the channel. At max ebb it does not take much swell to get it lively. Bigger swell and you better be ready for rescues and a good time. The zipper will set up around the bar north of Wood and you can surf with all sand and easy bailouts. North of the channel there is Jack Rock. Go to the north side of Jack. There is a nice tidal race that will give smaller clean waves and no swell is needed that I recall. On a bigger day Jack is ( IMO) safer and easier for newer players. Many options for surfing at the beaches near fox if the crowds are down. I have free days and might be able to get up there, PM with dates if you want. thxs
  4. I made racks in my shed some time ago and found that they are a little tight vertically. You might believe you only need height plus a couple inches but when I carry one in alone it is on its side and I like to set it and roll it level. My spacing makes that more difficult but I live with it. If your racks tier out longer at the bottoms you will be fine going tighter. Why not just six feet apart on supports? Would that keep you closer to bulkheads for support?
  5. Leaving out of Odiorne in Rye, Nh at 9am Thursday 7/5. 9am departure will just get us out through the flats and then onto whatever is outside. Maybe head down to Rye Harbor, maybe over to Wood and up through the river. Figure some surf play or beach landings depending on conditions. You must be into 8-12 miles, slower pace. Maybe river currents? Back in after 4-6 hours? Post or message me to let me know. No interest may change my times.
  6. I believe I bought Rogers red Explorer about 2001? Think he was moving on.. What about Chris Perkins? always wondered how these people could be so into it and then drop it?
  7. prefer core strength, endurance , defiantly coaching and surf ski podcasts that talk about the mechanics of motion.
  8. On the list...though it seems so sad...Have to finish "Slouching Towards Bethlehem" which is a small glimpse of CA in the 60"s..
  9. Few thoughts: I now have a potential play spot destination for some future trip. Watching the swamping is striking and makes me wonder?? Assumptions about reaction time aside. At the moment he realized he might have trouble should he have tried to slow the boat or speed up to get more in front of it? Wonder if the boat was bow heavy? Not trimmed right? Wonder what his insurance company will do with it?
  10. There have been low cost used skin boats come up for sale. Maybe you could find one that fits? Yost and maybe Kudzo use some non traditional skin methods which may be more to your liking. and for my 2 cts: If you have a warm shop area, are handy and like wood projects you could bang out a proven design in stitch and glue in under 100 hours. There are many designs that have the hard chines and lines you may be looking for. Have you been to the Guillemot Kayak building bulletin board site? They cover a lot on Skin boats.
  11. Jed and I had many 'firsts" on the water. Analytical, thorough and always ready to push to a new level of understanding. Very sad for his family. jed surfing Jenness.pdf
  12. A great write up with beautiful pictures. Happy that you were able to make this dream come true. The idea of lunch on a flat iceberg and the concern of falling through a thin spot. Yes, I might have that concern. Surprised that you were able to have a few fires. I might have thought limited resources would have been cleaned up by locals. Thanks for posting.
  13. The video looks like wind driven waves coming in the inlet maybe stood up by wind? For it to be "what I define tide race as" would be tidal water rushing over an uprising in the sea floor causing more of a standing wave pattern on the surface. This may happen without a lot of wind but is certainly amplified by opposing wind. They are known as great "relatively safe" play spots. IMO Think Sugar reef, Wiccopiset Passage and Fishers Race in eastern CT. Off Popham and in Fundy. I even know a little one in Great Bay NH. What kind of ebb flow at Jupiter Inlet? Hampton has a large breakwater and I have only seen the waves come partway in towards the faster water under the bridge. Wind against the current under the bridge will stand them up. I would paddle with no worries in a wind less than 15knots.
  14. There is nothing -- absolutely nothing -- half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats. In or out of 'em, it doesn't matter. Nothing seems really to matter, that's the charm of it. Whether you get away, or whether you don't; whether you arrive at your destination or whether you reach somewhere else, or whether you never get anywhere at all, you're always busy, and you never do anything in particular; and when you've done it there's always something else to do, and you can do it if you like, but you'd much better not." - Kenneth Grahame, Wind in the Willows
  15. Typical marsh and kind of maze like. Have not paddled it but did take a shortcut across as a kid. We were swimming a few times and learned a lesson that day... Tides can run 2-3 knots under bridge. boat traffic and sand bars out on the south side. Beach landing outside but I usually stop at the beach under the bridge on the Seabrook side. Nice area in the summer. Everything inside the bridge is better at higher tides.
  16. Why would you need this? You are just asking for headaches. ))
  17. Try the Kayak building bulletin board. They have a lot of tech types that might help. I have tinted epoxy resin a few times and used West System. They have max amounts and guidelines in their literature but polyester and epoxy are different...
  18. Snorkeling was mentioned as an option in the current fishing post. This is something I have been wanting to do more of and would be very interested in joining any others for a snorkeling trip. We have the neoprene ......Can even anchor our kayaks or tow them. Off Gerrish Island has some nice areas, Brave boat harbor, off the beaches, maybe the Nubble? Post interest here, thx
  19. Use duct tape to push the loop down tight which should create a gap under washers or washer plate. Invert and place stern down in such a way that you could dribble epoxy around bolt and have it stay for the cure period.( I reach down with a dixie cup 1/2 full) Needed epoxy should stay put and some may not bond and fall away over time. You could remove, fill and rework the toggle? Leon, An aside... Thanks for the pics of FLA a few weeks back....here is my boat shed at the same time
  20. We are mostly ocean paddlers on this site. New England has a few decent rivers but better to get on the Merrimac Valley Paddlers site, Meetup for white water or maybe the AMC NH paddlers site. Many of us enjoy finding white water like conditions on the ocean in our long boats.
  21. Total mileage should be 8-12 and moderate pace means 3-3.5 kts. If you have never paddled this area we could tour the river and make it a longer day. Hope to set up some play areas so boat choice is up to you and your ability to spin and surf the boat. Plenty of room for anyone to tag along and stay out any play spots. Might bring my Avocet or Explorer...not sure yet. Off by 2-3pm
  22. Heading out of Rye, Odiorne launch sat 10/15 at 9:30 am. Going up the coast to the outside of Gerrish. Plan on some rock and surf play as the swell should be up. May visit Wood Island to check progress on the restoration. Route TBD. Bring helmets, rescue skills and energy as I keep a moderate pace. Please message or post your intent here as I need to know who has interest. If no interest I may change venue and or go solo. Thanks,
  23. How about working through all the strokes for the BCU or ACA syllabus for your appropriate level? Just don't perfect mistakes...If unsure get your technique right.
