  1. Thanks, everyone for fabulous food!!! And thank you, John, for a very informative workshop! A great way to have spent a Sat. in January!
  2. So I guess people should feel free to pack a lunch and/or something to share. We will see how much food shows up. Looking forward to John's workshop and learning about the waves, tides and currents :-) See you there...
  3. WORKSHOP POTLUCK FOOD January 29th from 10:00 am-2:00 pm Location: Parker River National Wildlife Refuge VISITOR CENTER 6 Plum Island Turnpike, Newburyport, MA It was suggested at yesterday's board meeting that since the above workshop runs through lunchtime, that we make it a NSPN potluck event, too. So I invite participants to bring what they would like to eat and share with others. It might be helpful for people to post what they would like to contribute to allow for a better mix of food items. If it is anything like the Holiday Party, I'm sure there will be some delicious food. Perhaps some drinks, cups, paper plates, napkins, utensils would be helpful, too. I sign up for Almond Cookies and perhaps Brownies. See you there, Nancy
  4. Thanks Phil. I was mixing those hatch covers up with my Tempest, which does have a messed up cover and happens to be Kajaksport. Thanks. I guess I'm hatch dyslexic. My covers are not stiff but the rear seems a bit lopsided, although if I put a lot of effort in to putting it on right, it looks better. However I do leak back there and have never taken the time to determine whether it's the cover or the skeg box. My day hatch is almost impossible to remove, which can be a problem. That mini tab just doesn't do it for me. Nancy
  5. I replaced a hatch cover on my daughter's Avocet two winters ago. Do you know if this would be considered an old or new cover? I've never thought any of them on that boat were very easy to get in to.
  6. Betty Ann, I enjoyed a few kayak cookies I brought home with me!
  7. Yes, thanks for a great party. I only regret that I didn't make to earlier years.... What a great raffle and yummy food, good company...
  8. Looks great, Jason and Bill. I can no longer find my old email or PM section??? I'm on a mac, Firefox. I can see where to PM on a specific member, but don't know where the messages live? Thanks.
  9. On the marsh side there are signs stating not to land for most of the stretch. And perhaps along the northern portion of the beach. Once you get back to Ipswich in the marsh tons of boaters and rec kayakers land just across from the IBYC, Clark Beach, up to Pavilion. The stretch around the southern tip and a mile or two of ocean side on the south seems to be okay.
  10. Exactly. Thank you guys. Sorry I only made it to two. The good news is I got plenty of salt-water practicing in on my own. Looking forward to next year...
  11. Where is that beach? Hey you the Ross I met last night? Now I know who Papa yurtman is (?)
  12. If I don't get out before then, I may try to come. Seems like a bit of a trek in rush hour, though.
  13. Pardon my lack of clarity. Joel took us to those sliding doors in the back warehouse portion of his shop and tied the blade part with a certain knot I was supposed to remember and hitched it to the raised grasp handle (? for lack of knowing what to really call it). Guess you had to be there. He yelled at me for using lubricant but said WD-40 was probably all right as long as you thoroughly clean it off afterwords, which he helped me with. He also said NOT to apply excessive heat to the shaft, even with the cold on the side that goes in. Not good for the material. Anyhow, I am happy to have my paddle back for regular use and will try to take better care of it. I had ironically just caved for a second carbon Werner with higher angle blade (days before the Kalliste got stuck), but really missed my Kalliste. You guys are always good for a wealth of info. Thanks and enjoy the nice weather this week if you can! Nancy
  14. Hey, thanks for so many well thought-out suggestions. I tried many of them and the paddle remained stuck. I bought it a few years ago at New England Small Craft so I called Joel up today and he said he'd see what he could do if I came over. He didn't like the idea of applying heat or any lubricant other than WD-40, which is what I had used. We tied the paddle blade down to a door and between the two of us, held, pulled and tugged and finally got the thing to come loose. He cautioned to always take a paddle apart and rinse. Always avoid sand. Always avoid heat. So I am happy, happy to have my paddle back and want to make a plug for supporting local businesses such as NESC as "full service" and far preferable to internet. I am convinced the wet rag soaks and WD-40 paved the way for pulling to work, as when I tried this without the tying down, it did not work. Nancy
  15. Trying Suz suggestion and will let you know of any success
  16. I'll try this. So far nothing seems to work and I don't want to blow out a shoulder trying to separate a paddle ;-) Yes, I did rinse it after most use, but not always. The paddle was laying in the sand (apart), (as was I) and I took off kind of hastily, so guess I got sand in those groovy things. I love my greenland as a spare, but not to the point of giving up the euro for more power.
  17. Hey, anyone have any good ideas for getting apart a Ferrule System carbon Werner paddle? The fact that it's bent shaft makes it more difficult to get a good grip on separation. I called Werner and they said HOT soapy water. Have rinsed it in that a few times and still can't get it apart. ARG. Gonna try 303?
  18. I think NSPN and especially those who were there, can be proud of this rescue. Quite a success story without a doubt. The adult rescued person sounds disappointing, but maybe she was completely in shock? I think we all assume we'd have acted better (and probably would have), but it still has a great ending.
  19. Planning on joining you, but will let you know definitively tomorrow morning.
  20. Could be the same guy.... Black dog, not a lab but fairly big. He lives there most summer days up by the little neck side. Haven't seen the dog lately (haven't been there of late, either tho). Acts like he owns the beach. He was there that day, but there is no proof. I've modified my life because of this, and that stinks. Seen some new places though LOL
