  1. The swell period has a great effect on how swells turn into breaking waves. A 4' swell with a period of 9 sec will produce bigger waves than a 4' swell with a period of 4 sec. The reason is that the longer the period of a swell....the more (moving) water it contains...so when it piles up into the shallows...it stands up higher....and with more power.
  2. Not sure about making it on Monday....but I am planning on tues around 5 .....seeing similar conditions predicted.....low tide is 6:46 on Tues.
  3. Thanks for posting them Dustin....great photos....but maybe I'm not totally objective.
  4. No personal experience to share but check this site for some options. http://visitsebagolake.com/site/boating/boatlaunchesramps.html

I'm gonna try and make it.
  6. Looks like at least one thief has been caught. http://www.eagletribune.com/local/x1926600429/The-new-crime-trend-stealing-bicycle-racks
  7. That's a drag...thanks for the warning that this could become a trend. i don't know if you've looked into it at all but homeowners, or renters insurance may cover the racks as personal property...minus whatever deductable you have.
  8. The storm clouds looked more ominous than the weather they produced but WX was warning of potential hail, heavy rain and wind gusts of up to 35 kts . We were paddling hard for cover ( except for our intrepid photographer, Blaine, who stopped to take pictures) Fortunately the only things the clouds produced was the heavy rain...and we did find cover at Reid state park for the worst of it. BTW.....#80 is currently the background of my computer desktop.
  9. Nice photos Scott. I hope the sermon was well received but I suspect many (of us) in the group are beyond redemption.
  10. Unless I'm mistaken ....the seavy creek launch is where we'll meet.....and I think Doug may have meant to say Fort Point, instead of Kittery point.
  11. There are some very experienced paddlers here and even some experienced kayak fishermen. But...most people here favor sit inside sea kayaks that I'm sure you'd find more tippy feeling than a Wilderness Pungo. It would be benificial for you to look through the safety info link on this site for some basic info that would be helpful to anyone getting out on the water in a kayak. For more feedback on the kind of boat that you're shopping for you might try searching out a club dedicated to kayak fishing.
  12. Dustin......I'm pretty sure I'll be there by then.
  13. Prudence, We can only see our own warn status that's why it looks like no one else has it. To tell you the truth I'm not entirely sure what it's all about....maybe Jason can give an explanation.
  14. The brand is "Ocean Potion Suncare" Face SPF 45 clear zinc oxide. It comes in a screw top jar that is 2" in diameter and about 1-1/2" deep Here's a link: http://www.amazon.com/Ocean-Potion-Suncare-Clear-Oxide/dp/B000EGMBP2 Hope it's helpful.
  15. I've had pretty good luck with a face specific zinc oxide ( it rubs in and is invisible) the brand is... ? not sure off the top of my head...but I can check if you're interested. It's available online. As a bonus it comes in a small container that fits easily in a PFD pocket. As far as slippery hands on the paddle I started using sex wax (yes that's what it's called) on my paddle, last summer, with pretty good results. You can get sex wax at any surf shop.
  16. Doug..I didn't realize you guys waited under the bridge. Someone (DR Huth maybe) please chime in and correct me if I'm wrong but I think being under the bridge might not have been a good choice with lightning....something about the funnel effect? Was a fun night though....maybe when we grow up we'll make better choices

  18. Bill, The workshop date has been changed to Sun June 5th...check out the details in the "trips" message board.
  19. It was an all-star group of presenters at the workshop. A remarkable opportunity to learn and hone skills. Thanks to all who generously shared their time and experience .
  20. My drysuit is out for repair and I'm not sure how soon I'll have it back. If I don't get it back this week is there anyone with a Men's Lg suit that they'd be willing to let me borrow for next week's CAM workshop? I'd be happy to give it a good cleaning and 303 the gaskets before I returned it.
  21. Bob, Thanks for sharing your experience. I agree that spring is the toughest season to dress for. As far as water temps in RI...I used to vacation there in the summer and found the water temps to be 5 - 10 degrees warmer than beaches north of Cape Cod. I think that the shape of the coast tends to push the warm Gulf stream waters further offshore before they get up here.
  22. Rob, I'm interested in joining you.
