  1. Thanks for posting the link Ed. It looks pretty useful.
  2. Any chance the Coast Guard kept a recording of it? I think it would be a great file to post if they did. I know they post on their website a lot of audio recordings of past maydays, pan-pans, etc., all available for free download. After reading Adam's post about the coast guard logs I did some random browsing on google and came up with this one. It struck me kind of funny. Maybe this guy would be in the running for a Hard knocks award if he were an NSPN member. C'mon! who loses a yacht while out paddling? "25th October Call out to Loch Linnhe to locate the yacht Argo adrift and its owner who was in a sea kayak chasing it. Yacht was located aground on Caol beach with its owner aboard. Assisted the owner to secure the yacht to the shore. Oban Lifeboat was turned back once the owner was out of danger. "
  3. Nice job getting that video Doug. Wish I could have made it Sat.
  4. Just got back from the cold water workshop. Thanks to Liz for generously opening her home to us all. Thanks to Suz and Scott for the great presentations and thanks to everyone else who helped make the time in the water a safe and valuable experience. And, of course, thanks to everyone for the great food. All in all, a great day and it was nice to meet some new people. Hope to see everyone out on the water.
  5. I keep 3 hand launch ariel flares in a very small, flexible drybag and it fits in my PFD pocket. i haven't had to use them so I can't vouch for their reliability..but they have stayed dry.
  6. Sounds like it'd make a nice Christmas card photo.
  7. Bill, It appears that you're not the only one curious about it. I've just scanned this but it might offer an explanation. http://www.whoi.edu/science/cohh/whcohh/i/...inal_report.pdf
  8. Well, that sounds kinda loopy.....Heeyyy! the loops
  9. I'm hoping to be there as well.
  10. John, Thanks for posting the files. I'm sure that I'm not alone in finding this stuff really interesting and of course, useful.
  11. LMAO!!! And I thought it might be something too complicated for me to comprehend. Thanks for the reassurance.
  12. I use the Lotus pack that Rob listed the link to. I've used it on a couple of different pfd's and it works well for me.
  13. I think the lifeguards are pretty much gone after labor day.
  14. I was able to just click on the link. I'm definitely not the best person to answer computer questions but maybe just a different software version. My MAC runs OS X version 10.4.11
  15. Great trip account. Thanks for posting it. Even knowing he made it, I felt like a giant fist was squeezing my chest as I read it.
  16. My guess is that a strike that close is going to be VERY!!!!!! LOUD!
  17. OH! One other thing...salt water is an excellent conductor of electricity. I'm not sure being in the water would be a good thing if there was a close strike.
  18. I attended Dr Huth's weather workshop this past spring. His take was that statistically, out on the open water, the risk of being struck by lightning is very small and that the risk from the associated winds is of greater concern. Also, as was mentioned in this thread, he felt that the area near the waters' edge was a more dangerous place to be as far as the lightning itself.
  19. It was a very enjoyable day at the beach. Thanks for getting it together Neil.
