  1. use of message board: write your message. go get a beer. if you still want to post it after the beer is gone, go ahead and do it, otherwise delete. Excellent advice...and yet one more reason to have a beer
  2. Asking ourselves what we would have done differently in the same situation is not a way of showing our superiority but simply our humility. As Florrie put it so well, sometimes there are no good answers. I agree with your last post Gene. I think the problem stems from basing assumptions on, often, inaccurate news stories.
  3. QUOTE(Kevin B @ May 22 2009, 07:51 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>Beach briefing at 10a.m on Sunday. Plan is to paddle south towards Gerrish. Additional details will be posted later today. Kevin, I plan on joining you.
  4. I might be up for cape porpoise on Sunday
  5. Great idea Jon. Thanks for sharing that.
  6. In my case the rims were leaking where they were bonded (or not) to the deck. I found the worst leaks just as you suggested by pouring water around the outsides of the rims and watching it leak inside. The smoke test (same dealer as Bill's boat) turned up some smaller ones as well.
  7. I don't know. That sounds more like a cop out than good advice. I just had two hatch rims sealed and one replaced, under warranty, and it's soooo nice to have dry hatches. I use dry bags anyway but everything isn't a soggy mess when I unload my boat now.
  8. I'd love to see myth busters tackle that one. Maybe you should have suggested they blow something up before people wind up in the water. I think that would make it irresistible to them.
  9. Gene, Your onside roll should be ingrained enough that you won't mess it up. When I started learning my offside roll I'd conciously disengage the knee that I used for onside rolling from the thighbrace before I capsized. That way when I was under water I wouldn't be thinking about which knee to use rolling back up on the offside. If I didn't make it I'd re-engage the knee and come back up on my strong side...then give it another try. Just like learning on your strong side..persistance pays off.
  10. Wild turkey paddlers might be the closest ones. Some of them were at the REI demo day on Saturday.
  11. Hope it heals fast Ern. Bad time of year for an injury like that.
  12. Hmmm with a bit of boat modification imagine how that energy could be harnessed for forward thrust.
  13. Karen, I have a wilderness tempest in kevlar. I can't speak to other brands but the tempests (in kevlar) have had a lot of problems with leakage around the hatch rims and cockpit coamings where they attach to the deck. I just had mine resealed (under warranty) and the dealer that facilitated the repairs (but didn't actually do them) said that he doesn't sell kevlar boats because he feels that there will always be problems due to the flexibility. He conceded that they have greater abrasion resistance but thought that to be their only advantage aside from a modest weight reduction. That is, of course, only one man's opinion. I've had my boat for about 3 years. I haven't done a lot of rock play in it but it's been banged and scraped against rocks...and dragged up the beach with only superficial gel coat scratches. Aside from the leakage problems (other brands may not have the same track record) I've been happy with the boat.
  14. Ed, I have to say, in defense of the club, that In the past year I've attended some excellent workshops and paddles. John Huth on weather and sea conditions, Adam Bolonsky on navigation, Suz and Scott on cold weather paddling. Rick S gave an very informative and well attended presentation on how to do a beach briefing which was followed by a well organized and monitored paddle in conditions that were challenging to many of us. There were a lot of skilled paddlers from the club out on the water that day and they were all very generous in sharing their knowledge. As someone who still has a lot to learn I feel that I've gained a lot of ground in just the past year. I think there are many opportunities for people who are looking for them. Not to mention what can be learned from simply paddling with and observing people who are more skilled than myself.
  15. Chris, If you look below the video window you'll see the link to the ladder rescue video. Video Ladder Style Assisted Rescue for Sea Kayak
  16. Thanks Scott and Ed. What a wealth of information. How did we ever muddle through our lives before there was the internet?
  17. Spider, If I'm not mistaken I think that some units have removable memory cards which would give you pretty much unlimited capacity. You'd just plug in the card with the charts for the area you were paddling in.
  18. Mary, Glad to see that you're living the dream for the rest of us as we plod through our lives. ENJOY every minute of it.
  19. I haven't heard anyone mention that they know him. I think he was from the Concord NH area.
  20. I've got family commitments tomorrow but I'm hopeful about being able to get out next weekend.
  21. I'll see you guys there.
  22. my cell is 978-973-6806 keep me in the loop. I'll check the boards in the morning too.
  23. 11 sounds good. I'll watch the weather and the board.
  24. This winter I've had to use snowshoes myself to carry my boat to my truck. I wonder what the neighbors think?
  25. I'm flexible on time. 11 would work just as well for me
