  1. The heal hook seems IMO good for a lot of people(normally sided people), for me it tends to leave my leg very bruised . As Phil mentioned it's much harder on the rescuer. When I do a rescue, I make the rescuers life easier by grabbing on to the rescuers boat instead of my boat. Thus when I am getting in I am no rolling my boat over, pulling the boats together instead of apart. Once should have a lot of rescues in the took box, not just a single go to.
  2. We really need to keep this about kayaking. I just had to nuke another thread that took a turn. It's very sad that our friends just had to waste $2,220 on new tires, just because some j*rk was too drunk to have a brain and not hurt other peoples items. I hope that Rob, Gary, David, Roger and Prue never experience the ever again. I would hope that the rest of the paddling community never experiences it for the first time. The $2,220 would have been better spent on paddling gear (IMO), then replacing perfectly good tires.
  3. I am so very sorry about the experience you had. I hope that they get the person. Makes one think that the people that put video recorders in their cars are looking less and less nuts.
  4. Please feel free to call me 6609600070 I will be glad to help you with your password. The new version of the software is in place. We still have a bit of cleanup to do. We have asked Google to recheck the site and it should be clear soon.
  5. Looks like the version of IPB has an issue. We don't currently have access to the latest version. Once we do we will re-install IPB keeping the DB and our user uploaded content.
  6. As long as the fiberglass isn't exposed ignoring it is a course of action. If not I wouldn't fix the gel coat with epoxy or caulking. You can just add additional gel coat (if you haven't worn the area down yet, you might sand it first). You can then sand it smooth if you like the factory look (or leave it as an extra wear layer). If you like the factory look Brian had a new website that will help you: http://briannystrom.com/?page_id=51
  7. I am not sure what the link is supposed to be but it shows up as a 404 error for me.
  8. Some fine sand paper should get rid of the sharp edge. Or even a sanding sponge, the plastic will smooth out quickly.
  9. How do you store you paddle? I normally store my most recently used paddles spit hanging from the blades. I rinse the paddles to remove the last before hanging them up. The ones that haven't been used in some time are then reconnected and rotate to the back (to save space).
  10. When was it ever lifetime? I know that I had broken paddles in the past and had to pay for the repair as the paddle was over a year old. That was at least 5 years ago.
  11. Just paddle more. When you get in front of the group turn around and paddle to the back of the group at bit, then paddle to the front again, it will help you work on your speed and you will get extra miles in.
  12. Dumping beaches seem to have more defined rip currents than non dumping beaches from my experience. It's a way for them to move the water off the beach. This NOAA page should help: http://www.ripcurrents.noaa.gov/overview.shtml The water might be moving off the beach, but at a rate that is fine to paddle against and normally much flatter than the surrounding area's.
  13. If you run into a dumping beach look for the tide rip, you will normally find that spot to be a much more friendly place to land or launch from (it should be a lot less dumpy). -Jason
  14. The 2.5W limit has been updated to be much larger than 2.5W depending on the source. An IPAD uses a 2.1 amp charging off of a type A USB port (Not all type A ports support 10.5 Watts). USB3 is to support up to 100Watts.
  15. Old school weller soldering iron's have wide rope cutting tips. http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Weller-RCT-Rope-Cutting-Tip-fits-8200-9200-Soldering-Gun-Solder-Iron-/300636177730
  16. It's government IT. I would guess that they don't know that it's down. My guess is they will fix it some time next week.
  17. I think that we are supposed to do it every 3 months. I am bad and just do it at the start and the end of the season.
  18. Hiking compass would be a good replacement for a deck compass, but a NAV Aid != compass. Having a deck compass and a hand held is the way to go.
  19. Lots of ways to make a skeg if need be. A line tied to the stern of a kayak dragging in the water will act as a skeg. Some greenland boats have tied on skegs. http://www.qajaqusagallery.org/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=29764
  20. I now have the book in hard cover. If you have the time this winter and your up for it it, I know that I would love if you would do another weather class followed by a book signing. :-)
  21. I am sure that they have spent a lot more than $30K over the years. My understanding is they just recently spent the $30K. I can't say that a 5K/year lease anything other than a deal and a half. Even if they were getting a deal on the lease they really provided a great resource to the community. CRCK started a lot of people in this club out and pointed them in the direction of sea kayak. I know that I did a number of trips with them and purchased my first sea kayak from them. http://boatinginboston.com look to be much more of a rec boating type of group, time will tell if they are able to keep things at the same level.
  22. This is some sad news for CRCK: http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/2013/05/04/charles-river-canoe-and-kayak-loses-permit-run-newton-boathouse-longtime-operator-loses-boathouse-bid/rO0kfthlSkIdur8UhIAH2M/story.html
  23. I ordered the print version, as that will be easier to get signed. I am still interested in the kindle version.
