I like old but still good fleece jackets etc that fit me as I haven't meet a kayaker that I couldn't hand them to have have them be able to get into them.
I like compasses with longer base plates. For under $3 one can pick one on epay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Baseplate-Ruler-Map-Scale-Compass-Scouts-Camping-Hiking-/270766058336 I have a few of these that I lend out. If they don't get returned it's short $'s and they don't seem to get air bubbles any sooner than a $45 one.
As much as the M73 plus sounds like it's a nice radio, I am going to attempt to make my M72 last a bit longer. For about the same $'s as the M73 plus one can end up with the M92D that includes DSC and GPS. I don't like the size (I don't like the size of any of the floating radios as they are just larger). I have to think in the next couple of years DSC/GPS will become standard in all VHF, marine radios.
I was given a laser flare for my birthday, it seems like a nice alternative, as I am not likely to loose a finger/hand. If you look on youtube, you can see some flare launches from kayaks going very wrong.
Nothing but problems with aquapac cases. They seem to grab and hold on to water. I have had two and an open ziplock seems to be better at keeping water out.
I know that many white water paddlers attend swift water rescue training, it great fun and you get to play with situations like that. I attempt to take a 2 or 3 day class in it every other year. -Jason
