  1. If this was the summer I wouldn't think twice about sending my dry suit back to Kokatat. They do a great job with the gaskets, they will install a custom sized gasket on request and they can hydro test and patch the suit. The cost is very reasonable and off season they are very quick. If you can't part with your suit for long Carl is always great with repairs.
  2. It looks like I can only post two video's in a reply thus I am re-posting this one: Julie found this one: and the trailer is good but it doesn't do justice to the full video (it's worth spending $'s on)
  3. To get a little kayak film fix two videos my brother sent me: http://youtu.be/b9a3lMKWIxo (If you only watch one this is the winner). Julie found this one: and the trailer is good but it doesn't do justice to the full video (it's worth spending $'s on)
  4. That assumes that you can paddle upstream at all. Many times you will ferry across a river/current and at best you can avoid dropping too far down with no hope of making up the ground that you have lost.
  5. I don't think that anybody is ever protected from a lawsuit. Godd Samaritan laws help protect the rescuer, but just going to court to win you have already lost.... http://masslawlib.blogspot.com/2006/08/good-samaritan-laws.html
  6. I could suggest that you start with a boat that let's you get the feel of it then move to a boat that's not as easy. My brother started with ran rolling his polo kayak and now can hand roll his explorer. Currently I can only hand roll my polo boat but in time I hope to be able to hand roll my play boat.
  7. I have dehydrated a lot of apples over the last two falls. I like to core them, then cut them fairly thin (medium blade on the mandoline) . I dry them in the oven cracked a little set to ~140F. It doesn't take that long and it makes great apple chips.
  8. You should talk with Rick C he has done the Natucket & MV Circumnavigation already and know's many of the issues you might run into.
  9. It http://www.kates.org/pictures/Jason/Kayak/MISC/20080511-Manhattan_Circumnavigation/ I have enjoyed the paddling that i have done in NYC. The boat house that my friends have boats at is stil closed from the storm. http://www.kates.org/pictures/Jason/Kayak/MISC/20080511-Manhattan_Circumnavigation/
  10. No real agenda. Everybody shows up pool to work on their own thing. In the process people see what other people are working on and lend a hand. It ends up that people help others with what they know (pass it forward) and it turns into a community learning/play experience.
  11. I know someone that picked one up on e-bay with the pump this summer. It's a classic stove.
  12. Riding the wave is fun & stable. Once you drop off the wave you will see what's behind the wave as that is where the bracing really happens... (It's white water in a longer boat). River paddling is great cross training. You might look at the NH AMC WW school, many of us from NSPN have attended. http://www.nhamcpaddlers.org/events_schools/spring_school.php -Jason
  13. Looks like a nice find. I might have to look at these for where my feet tend to wear though my boats http://www.keeleazy....yled/index.html I look forward to hearing from Cathy about her feedback on the product.
  14. Most GPS units of recording your current positions. Holding the enter key on my first Garmin would then ask to create a way point (showing the current position). I have a Garmin 60csx, 76Cx, Emap, Forerunner 305 and a few others I don't recall, they each can record you current position and display it to you in one way or another (quickly) you just need to learn the GPS unit before you need to use a function like that. I normally keep the GPS in a dry case in my 4th hatch as another layer of backup (moved to may day hatch at night as it messes with my night compass that ends up directly over my 4th hatch). -Jason
  15. BTW this is the Kayak polo goal that I build out of PVC pipe. 6" PVC for the base and 1 1/2 & 1 1/4 for the upright.
  16. i I did get it, but it's not a kayak. It's not even a SOT. The thing isn't a kayak, doesn't even have a decent seat, or any way to stay attached to attempt to roll it...
  17. Why does this thread have a video of a catamaran? Doesn't seem to relate to rolling.
  18. The most common and possibly the best advice is: 1. Try a lot of boats. On paddles people will let you play with their bpats at lunch, pool sessions and lake sessions are a great place to. 2. The first boat the you purchase will be a good place to spend some time an lean what you do and don't like. Normally this boat will be a transition boat. 3. Purchase a good used fiberglass boat, the hold on to their value purchase it for X use it for a couple of seasons to figure things out and sell it to someone for about the same price. Used glass boats tend to hold their value and are basically a free rental (You just paid the previous owner a deposit that you will get back from the next owner).
  19. I too had the same issue where I thought that they were leaking and a change in socks fixed it. The nice thing with the Gor-Tex socks is that they are tested when the suit is tested and they can repair them. The feet in my old dry suit never had to be patch for pin holes (other than the one hole from where it got slammed in the trunk). I babied the feet (didn't walk on them without shoes, changed on foam mats etc, my hips developed pin hole as that's where the suit rubs against the boat.
  20. I think that show how much you can see about your forward stroke. I know that I thought that my forward stroke was much different then I saw it on video.... Since then I have worked on it a lot and it's about time to have someone film it again. -Jason
  21. Looking at the cookware I found the "The NOLS Cooking Show" channel: Looks fairly interesting. -Jason
  22. Suz, Thanks for the pointer at that blog! This won't be for camping but I think that I am going to have to try to make the scones this week: http://smittenkitchen.com/blog/2012/10/roasted-pear-and-chocolate-chunk-scones/
  23. I love my dry top! When I use my dry top it's normally over a short sleeve shirt and swim trunks. If I had to guess I get 20 paddling days a year in it. When it turns into the season that I am not willing to swim in my shorts, dry top and short sleeve shirt I move directly to my dry suit. (This said if they made a Knappster http://www.kokatat.com/products/jackets/gore-texr-knappster-men.html in my size I would likely wear that instead of my dry top). -Jason
  24. Looking at the Amazon page it should be May 2013, I hope we don't have to wait that long.
  25. This is fairly scarry! (IMO). http://www.livescience.com/24963-thousands-of-natural-gas-leaks-found-in-boston.html
