  1. is this weekend, but the forecast is for rain. Monday (Columbus Day) looks better. Sunset is 6:03 PM. Moonrise 6:53 PM. Any interest? If the forecast improves we could try for Sat. night. I can't do Sunday. Liz
  2. cut off the gaskets and use it as a snowsuit when shoveling out from a blizzard. :-)
  3. https://www.gloucestertimes.com/news/kayaker-floats-for-hours-before-rescue/article_40841838-d7e6-11e9-a303-8ba01370373f.html -- I bet he was pretty cold. MANCHESTER — A lifejacket saved a kayaker who floated in 4-foot seas for about three hours before being found off House Island, on the outskirts of Manchester Harbor, the Coast Guard said. A good Samaritan reported seeing an overturned orange kayak near Salem Channel to the Coast Guard in Boston at 2:24 p.m. Shortly after, the wife of the missing kayaker called. The Beverly Harbormaster rescue crew found the kayaker wearing a life jacket after about an hour search. He had been floating for about three hours. Two rescue boat crews from Coast Guard Station Gloucester and crews from the Salem Harbormaster also launched. They found the kayak before the kayaker, and it contained a dry holding a set of keys and a T-shirt. "A life jacket really saved this man's life," said Ensign Isabella Stoyka, the duty public affairs officer for Sector Boston. "If his kayak was labeled, we may have found him sooner." The water temperature was 66 degrees and winds were about 20 knots, the Coast Guard said.
  4. I'm posting this here in addition to the trips section. Hopefully everyone will get it: - We can't paddle with an advisory in effect. .SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY IN EFFECT UNTIL 8 PM EDT THIS EVENING... Synopsis: ANZ200-150315- 1010 AM EDT Sat Sep 14 2019 .Synopsis for Massachusetts and Rhode Island coastal waters... A cold front will push across the southern waters by this evening before stalling tonight. The front washes out by Sunday morning.
  5. Well rats. Instead of dying down, the winds are picking up. We can't paddle with a small craft advisory so this trip is cancelled. Bummer. I'll try for Oct. 12 or 13. .SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY IN EFFECT UNTIL 8 PM EDT THIS EVENING... Synopsis: ANZ200-150315- 1010 AM EDT Sat Sep 14 2019 .Synopsis for Massachusetts and Rhode Island coastal waters... A cold front will push across the southern waters by this evening before stalling tonight. The front washes out by Sunday morning.
  6. Also, bring something warm to put on in case we decide to walk out the breakwater. It can be COLD.
  7. It looks like the forecast for gusts is down a bit. Showers still 20% but I found my magic umbrella. For years I put it on my foredeck and it NEVER rained while we were on the water - regardless of the forecast. Be ready to launch at 6 PM if you are coming. Liz
  8. It would be helpful if those who are now not going took their names off the calendar so we can see who actually still is going. Liz
  9. Thanks for that, Ken. It looks like it will be cloudy, but that won't deter me if others still want to give it a go.We can noodle along the inner harbor route to get out to the breakwater, then decide if we want to go further. The wind gusts may or may not appear. Parking may be available on the boat ramp. If not, unload there and park on the boulevard. Parking is free. Note: A new restaurant opened at the former Morning Glory spot across the street. Great mideastern food. We might want to stop in for a snack and warm-up night cap on our return. Liz
  10. watching the forecast: Sat S winds 10 to 15 kt. Gusts up to 20 kt in the afternoon. Seas around 4 ft. A chance of showers in the afternoon. Sat Night SW winds 10 to 15 kt. Seas 2 to 3 ft. A chance of showers in the evening.
  11. I'm still hoping the weather will permit the full moon paddle to go forward Saturday evening, so Sunday would be best for me. Liz
  12. I strongly advise against stern lights, as it ruins the night vision of anyone behind you. They are not required in these waters. All you need is a white light available, not on all the time, that can be shone at an oncoming vessel. Some people do like to put glow sticks on decklines, but I don't bother. We will stay away from any boats on the water, and I doubt there will be many. NOTE: This trip is weather dependent. Liz
  13. This Saturday the 92.5 the river Seaside Music Festival will be at Stagefort Park on GLoucester harbor. (For years this was held in Newburyport but it got too big for that location.) The festival is free, noon to 6 PM. https://theriverboston.com/attend/riverfest/ Would anyone like to paddle to it, listen to some music, lunch, then paddle on? There are several launch options to do this, depending on the size of the group. Liz
  14. Anyone interested in a Saturday night full moon paddle? It won't have to be a late night. Sunset 6:56 PM Moonrise 7:35 PM low tide 6:23 PM high 12:43 AM (after midnight) I suggest launching from the Greasy Pole in Gloucester Harbor at 6 PM or a bit earlier. I would welcome new paddlers, and first-time night paddlers. We could skirt the inner harbor, stop at lighthouse beach next to the dogbar breakwater, and walk out the breakwater to watch the moon rise out of the ocean. Or, if people are comfortable with more exposure, we could paddle down to Kettle Island. Liz
  15. I can FINALLY join you. Hopefully the storms will hold off. Liz
  16. I have a Lotus Designs Low Rider that I bought for racing: no pockets in the way. This is the model: https://www.amazon.com/Lotus-Designs-L1060GRT762SP02-Lowrider-PFD/dp/B000J36A5W I have no use for it so if you are interested we can find a time for her to try it out. Liz
  17. The greenheads are likely to be atrocious there. Liz
  18. I'll join you also. The Cove coffee shop in Lanesville is good. Liz
  19. What time do you anticipate being off the water? I want to be in Boston for this concert at 7:30 PM https://www.landmarksorchestra.org/concerts/current-season/
  20. I was supposed to be in Wellfleet but plans changed. So, is anyone up for a sunset paddle this evening out of Lanes Cove or Gloucester harbor? I'm going swimming instead. Liz
  21. Thanks for the memories, Pru. My Norway trip was farther north, starting in Bodo and paddling across the arctic circle. I think Norway is like Italy: plunk down anywhere and you can't go wrong. I had posted a trip report but could not find it. This was the trip: “Crossing The Arctic Circle” Exploratory Expedition 2000 10 days. July 4 - 13. $1,950.00 For the first time Crossing Latitudes will offer an exploratory expedition south of the Arctic. This allows us to paddle across the magic latitude of 66°33’, the Arctic Circle! It can’t be more exciting than this. According to fishermen and friends in Norway the coast of Helgeland is a paddlers paradise. Come and join us explore this wild archipelago with thousands of islands. Paddle by some of the largest pelagic bird rookeries in Norway and visit small coastal fishing villages. The Svartisen Glacier, Norway’s second largest, is an awe inspiring landmark along our route. Liz
  22. Does Ipswich have greenheads these days?
