    Alan's description of the gyre reminds me so much of my misadventure in Glacier Bay many years ago, except we were caught amongst icebergs also. His ability to keep focused while that hypothermic is impressive. Liz

    I have a pair of dry gloves that I never used, and won't because I don't paddle in the winter. If anyone wants them, you can have them. No guarantee that they won't leak. Liz

    At the end of the trip I bought the charts for my Norway paddle, intending to use them for wall paper, but I have never figured out how to do that. Any ideas? Of course now they have been rolled up for many years and would have to be flattened. Liz

    After that Squam trip they told us not to bring so many kayakers ever again. Another too-big trip was the NSPN-RICKA-Connyak multi-club trip in CT. August 25, 2001, Saturday Jamestown Circumnavigation Time: 9:00am Location: Ft. Wetherill, Jamestown, RI I can't remember how many paddlers came. But we gave up on the multi-club trip idea after that. Liz

    approaching decision time. The weather looks fine; clear, low wind, but COLD. I'm taking the Bearskin Neck launch possibility off the table because The Studio has closed for the season. The easiest launch is from Pavillion Beach on the boulevard, AKA the greasy pole. The moon will be rising at a heading of 73 degrees NE, according to this site: https://www.timeanddate.com/moon/usa/gloucester. That means the best places to be to see it will be Kettle Island or Brace Cove. Feel free to check my math. :-)) For a shorter route we could launch at Niles Beach. Sign up on the calendar or let me know if you are interested. It looks like 5 hardy souls as of now. Liz

Beach briefing and route CAM discussion at 3:30 PM. Gloucester Harbor to Brace Cove or Kettle Island. If it is too windy to go outside the harbor, we would stop at Lighthouse Cove, climb up onto Dogbar, walk to the end to watch the moonrise. Finish the evening at The Studio on Rocky Neck or Yella on the Water on the boulevard (if they are still open). Small craft warning obviously cancels this trip. Drysuits required. Costumes optional but encouraged. Be creative with your mask. ? Liz

    This was actually the first time I have been able to join the annual Jewell trip. It was fabulous! Great weather, a bit of rain on Friday that did not even soak through the trees, and wonderful paddling buddies. This was my favorite tree on my hike around the island. Liz

    Dan got up for pre-dawn nav practice and dawn paddles. I just snapped this dawn photo. Absolutely glorious trip. I met a friend for lunch Sunday at Walter's Basin. Highly recommend it. We sat at a hightop outside, well away from others. Two kayakers we kept running into were at another table. (Lookska and Epic boats, both from Arlington).

    Hi Scott, Good to hear from you. I recall hearing about your Arluk adventure. Yes, this is Gene's Nordkapp, very stiff which I love, carbon deck and hull. I'm delighted that it is repairable and in capable hands as I type. This is the first major repair any of my boats has needed in my 25 years of paddling so I count that as good. Hopefully you and Beth can visit next year. I follow with envy how well New Zealand has been coping with this new virus. But, it may be that mother earth is just a bit fed up with homo sapiens and has decided to remove a bunch of us to rebalance the planet. I would not blame her. Enjoy your spring! Liz

    It turns out that my Prius does have screw-in bolts, one on each side of the front bumper. You have to pry the cover off with a butter knife or other tool, dig the bolts out from where they are stored with the spare tire, and screw them in. Since I would not want to drive around with bolts sticking out of my front bumper all the time, I would have to reverse that process for each use. No thanks. The auto body guy warmed me against my loop system, saying that the loop would wear the paint. I pointed out that I have been doing this for 4 years, 68,000 miles, with no wear or ill effect. He also told me the hood is made out of aluminum. Well, life is risky these days....

    They think you are not supposed to carry anything on the roof because it will cut down on your mileage rate. So, no place to tie down! Look under the hood. there are ways to do it. Liz

    I have noticed the S hook doing just that! Will use a carabiner from now on and shorten the line to what I need. My Prius has NO place to tie anything on in the front. This is what I rigged up. The loop works fine and shows no wear. When not in use I can tuck it under the hood.
