You can launch at the Greasy Pole boat ramp and hug the shore all around the harbor, with no need to ever cross the channel. LOTS of boats so you would not be able to cross the channel safely. I did this years ago, but will be in Montana so I can't go this year. Liz

One of two Massachusetts men who drowned Tuesday after their kayak overturned in a lake in Vermont was remembered by his family as “the greatest son you could imagine” who was “all about happiness.” Aidan Connolly, 27, of Roslindale, was kayaking with Nicholas Samuels, 29, of Weston, He lived in Roslindale Square in a condominium he bought two years ago and before that lived with his family in Brookline and West Roxbury. While he was a student at Brookline High School, he played baseball and ran cross-country, Connolly said. Connolly said Aidan was one of three children. He had two older sisters, Marjorie and Nora. His mother is Nancy Kelleher. “The most accurate thing for me to say about Aidan is that he was the greatest son you could imagine,” Connolly said in an e-mail to the Globe. “When I think of Aidan, I think of his wonderful smile and of the joy that was at the core of his being — and the joy he brought to others. He was all about happiness and being in the moment. Remembering his smile and his eager happiness brings us comfort at this terrible time.” Members of the Samuels family could not be reached for comment by the Globe. In a statement to WCVB-TV, the family said Nicholas Samuels was a graduate of Wayland High School and the University of Colorado at Boulder. “Nicholas’s time on Earth was tragically cut short. He was a vibrant 29 year-old intellectual and outdoorsman who loved life and lived it to its fullest,” the statement said, which is posted to the WCVB website. Seymour Lake is in Morgan, a town with a population of 638 in the northeast corner of Vermont. Aidan Connolly, 27, of Roslindale, was kayaking with Nicholas Samuels, 29, of Weston, on Seymour Lake Tuesday morning when treacherous weather caused the water to become choppy, with significant ice and slush. A witness saw Connolly and Samuels trying to swim to shore, but they went under the water and did not resurface, according to Vermont State Police. Connolly worked at Tesla since graduating from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where he was a pitcher on the club baseball team, according to his father, Robert Connolly. Authorities said the pair had set out in a single kayak from a protected cove where the conditions on the open lake were not apparent. The weather got worse while they were on the water, with increasing rain and strong winds, police said. Morgan resident David Bullock, who has lived on Seymour Lake for 15 years, said Tuesday’s weather was like a hurricane. “We’ve never seen the wind blow more extreme than it did yesterday,” Bullock said. “It looked like the ocean out there, with whitecaps.” Bullock said the spot where Connolly and Samuels entered the water was calm. But once they got out on the lake, they would have been fighting fierce winds to get back, he said. “It’s very sad,” he said. “Everyone here is so upset about it.”

Sunset at 8:24 PM Moonrise at 8:48 PM low tide 5:22 PM hi tide11:38 PM Having done this many times, my favorite viewing is to launch from the Greasy Pole (Stacy BLVD ramp on Gloucester Harbor), paddle out the west side of the harbor to Magnolia/Kettle Island for a brief stop near low tide, watch the moon rise over the water and light the way back. Unload boats at the boat ramp and park on the BLVD - be mindfull of the signs as some spaces have time limits. If it is too windy for that route, an alternative is to paddle out the commercial side of Gloucester Harbor, land at the beach just before Dogbar breakwater, and walk up onto the breakwater to watch the moonrise. Butts in boat: 7 PM Off the water: 10 PM+ depending on the route Lighting requirements: you must have a white light accessible and ready to shine at a vessel for safety. Anyone with a light on a post at the stern gets to be the sweep because those lights blind everyone else. Bring a headlamp and warm clothes, especially for Dogbar. If you have never paddled at night, you are missing out! Liz

IN case any of you were planning on launching at Dunfudgin and doing the Blackburn route: from the GDT By rail and by water, the ongoing MBTA bridge replacement project continues to disrupt the lives of Cape Ann riders along the Rockport commuter rail line and mariners on the Annisquam River. The next major disruption for mariners is scheduled to begin April 5, when the full river channel through the $100 million project will be closed to all vessel traffic Mondays through Saturdays, 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. The closures, set to continue until April 30, are to accommodate a 100-foot by 30-foot work barge and pile-driving system that will be used to drive support piles for the bridge's fendering system. The MBTA said the barge and associated equipment will be moved from the channel after working hours and vessel access will resume. "They're really trying to get the fender piles in," said city harbormaster T.J. Ciarametaro, who added that there will be a city harbormaster/police boat stationed on detail at the site during the hours of the closed vessel access. The closure will block all northbound and southbound marine traffic beneath the 110-year-old railroad bridge that connects West Gloucester to Gloucester proper. Boats on the north side of the bridge will need to take the long route up the Annisquam, out Ipswich Bay and around Cape Ann to reach any points east and south of Gloucester and Rockport. Vessel operators can reach the harbormaster staff on VHF Channel 16/13.
