In the video the end of shaft/top of blade may be stationary wrt the water, but the blade below the water is moving through the water, since the paddle pivots about the top of blade.

The 39th Celebrate the Clean Harbor Swim Saturday, August 19 Niles Beach, Gloucester, MA Volunteer Kayakers / Paddle Boarders are asked to be on the beach, with their boats/boards for a Safety meeting by 8:30. There is a 500 m swim for kids 12 and under at 9:00. There will then be a 1.2 mile swim which will start at 9:30. Kayakers are to provide safety support to offer a platform for swimmers to hold on to should the require assistance from lifeguards or police/harbormaster boats. Signal flags/whistles will be provided to kayakers as a means to signal for assistance or extraction if necessary. Kayakers are also asked to keep swimmers from going markedly off course. Sighting and navigation is part of open water swimming, but occassionally, swimmers need a little guidance. Cathy and I can both do this, but can't explain how yet...that's what we're working on. It's a great exercise in understanding a technique and then trying to explain it. Not everything in life needs a practical purpose. Obviously it's easier and more efficient to go head first onto your back deck like a seal and then to complete a taco roll (which I will maintain is a useful rescue, and works in conditions). Sure is fun, though. There's an impressive number of ways to blow it...

NOAA marine point forecast is for 2-3 ft at 8 sec, wind NE 15-16 kt, gusts to 23. MSW for Long Sands predicts 1-2 ft surf, 2 ft primary swell at 4-5 sec from E, 9-11 sec secondary swell from SE I'm trying to think of how/where we can go to enjoy this rather than just slogging into wind chop. Haven't come up with a brainstorm yet.

My guess is that the oil leaked out. If you take out the compass is there a plug on the globe? Just did a bit of research. Brunton has a support address on the web, and the compasses have a lifetime warranty. Amazon has 70P compasses for half price just now, perhaps the expedient solution.

I watch the fireworks from West Beach, and you can also see Marblehead's from there.

The site for the beach says no alcohol, glass, or bonfires. There are picnic pavilions with grills available to rent. Sounds as if a little grill would be ok. Wonder if we should look into the pavilions?
