  1. I have a spot for the 18th but can’t be there. PM me if interested. I’ll be at this Sunday’s session.
  2. Well, nothing wrong with a refresher course every 15 years or so... A couple of other points for those still learning (i.e., all of us): --notice how the rescuer handles his paddle, seldom letting go of it --note also that the swimmer grabs not only his deck lines, but also those of the rescuer's boat
  3. The EarthNC viewer hasn't been supported for a couple of years now. For a full free open-source chart viewer try OpenCPN. It's a full function chart plotter, and allows printing. Works for NOAA raster (RNC) and vector (ENC) charts, as well as charts from New Zealand, many European countries, lots more...
  4. We’re mulling over having some cider. In fact, we’re mulling over mulling some cider.
  5. We’re thinking a pan of lasagna. Cookies too.
  6. Looks like the food discussion has migrated to the other thread.
  7. Terese, be sure and sign up on the calendar event so you can get the super secret address for the party. Everybody else...the menu’s looking really good. Don’t miss it.
  8. Updates at https://www.nspn.org/forum/topic/12027-nspn-midwinter-party-120-is-fast-approaching/
  9. Yup. Prudence, David, and I. Too much fun.
  10. Good idea. I wasn't planning to starve myself...
  11. Let them starve. I’m not paddling.
  12. If you're an ACA member, you can avoid the doggone pesky paper waivers by using the annual online ACA waiver at http://www.americancanoe.org/?page=PACOnlineWaiver You'll need your ACA member number to complete the form. Once that's done, you're good for the year. If you're not yet an ACA member or need to renew, as an NSPN member you can get a $10 discount by joining ACA as a PAC (Paddle America Club) member, since NSPN is a PAClub.
  13. I’ve heard that it’s short for pearl diving.
  14. I guess I could stay out of the rocks for one day a year...
  15. Be sure you don’t break it in half...or in thirds.
  16. Lots of interesting passages through the rocks around there. I’ll be watching the weather.
  17. Jim, could be. I saw that they had an Android app, but didn't check details. The paid version for iOS with US charts is $25, and one that will accept charts from any source for worldwide use for $50. They have one for piloting large ships for $400 too. Working more with OpenCPM...great displays of current as arrows sized to flow. Gives an intuitive understanding of currents in an area like the Piscataqua.
  18. I've been looking for ways to display NOAA raster (RNC) charts seamlessly...pan from one chart to another and zoom in and out to the chart with the best resolution for that size (also known as quilted charts). You can do this at the NOAA RNC online site, https://www.nauticalcharts.noaa.gov/RNCOnline/rnconline.html . I also want to be able to draw a route and get distances, and pick points and get coordinates. I've been using EarthNC, but they've stopped support. Many of the available apps have annual subscription fees or charge for charts, even sometimes NOAA charts. Good solution for iOS (both iPhone and iPad) and Android is SEAiq. There's a free version that does a great job of raster chart display, and the charts are downloaded for offline use. If you get the paid version, it adds vector charts (bah!), routes, waypoints, tide and current predictions, and lots more. On board, you can get SOG, COG... I'm impressed. For a chart plotter for computer, OpenCPN seems to work well. Again, seamless display of NOAA raster charts, easy to draw a route. You can print chart sections, with routes you've drawn. Like SEAiq, it's intended to be used on board for piloting larger craft. It's free, including charts, and works on Mac, Windows, Linux... Also stumbled on an iOS app, Sailing Quiz. Good fun to check your knowledge of lights, buoyage...
