  1. Why don't you try the hot water on <one> side and icy water (or just plain ice) on the <other>? Hi Christopher, Nancy et al. I immediately thought of your hot/cold idea too, but then realized that carbon fiber is a terrible conductor of heat, so it wouldn't make any difference. But it's also quite inert, too, so if necessary, Nancy, use a penetrating oil that's stronger (thinner) than WD40, like Liquid Wrench, etc. Once apart I'd wash well, dry, then finish with 303 or a light silicone like Bob suggested. 2. Yet she still managed to beat the inimitable...umm...nevermind.
  3. Thanks, Scott 'n Suz. I'll check Tofino for intermediate trips and gear rental, as I'm loathe to give American Airlines $25/bag each way for my stuff. If Ellen wanted to 'yak it'd be a different trip. Here I am trying to pronounce Island names while she sifts through Chowhounds recommendations for downtown Vancouver. Sigh.... Gene, Sorry I missed that last trip up your way. Hope to repeat this fall. And sorry, ya CANNOT borrow Le Vague, as it's still awaiting a new P&H (sic) back-band to mate with my carved up and glued-in Cetus seat. See you all in Sept., and happy paddling! Ern
  4. House-swapping with a family in Victoria on the southern tip of Vancouver Island. My provincial eye-opening miscalculation of scale means that we'll probably NOT get all the way down to Seattle (and thus Bob B's Kayak Academy), so I wonder if members can recommend favorite kayaking spots either on the Island or off Vancouver proper, where we'll also be staying at a friend's apt part of the time. To keep packing to a minimum I guess I should leave all my gear at home and hope to rent decent stuff there, although I'm REALLY tempted to take my bent Ikelos...and my skirt...PFD...radio...tow belt.... Thanks, and see y'all in September. Ern
  5. Hi Prudence, Are these both good quality Brunton, Silva, Ritchey (sp?), etc. compasses with resolution well within 10 degrees? If so I'd send it back for replacement. If it's a really cheap compass I wouldn't be surprised by the 10 degree (2.6%) error. Regardless, sounds like one of them has its "card" misaligned. I would suspect that the easiest way to "fix" it is to mark a new correct index line on the compass, and then remount it true to the corrected line. If the NEW index mark looks too similar to the old one you may get confused, so don't try to copy it exactly unless you make TWO new ones, wherein the MIDDLE one of the trio will be your guide. Indeed some compasses (like my new Brunton 85R) have three indeces. OTOH +/- 10 deg error is well within the noise in chop and combined human/compass resolution we're used to, so I'm not sure I'd worry too much about it. Indeed a bigger correction for magnetic declination (16 deg) exists too. Ern
  6. Welcome! See: http://canoekayak.com/kayak/seakayakreview2008/ Apparently a trackier 'yak with fine secondary but difficulty edging, unlike similar smaller faves like the Force3. So lightweight, eh? I'm sure some of the ladies will chime in. And the Eliza, as well the albeit-heavier Cetus LV, Capella 161, etc. may be worth test-paddling.
  7. Why not TOMORROW (Tuesday)?! Sigh.... Ern
  8. Hi Bill, Paddled today (Sunday), so am unsure about Mon vs Tues. Threat of t-storms Mon PM, but also a bit cooler than Tues' predicted hot sun and lighter winds.... But maybe Monday is better if it's cloudy! We could always hug the coast if it rumbles much. Others' thoughts? Ern
  9. I'll join you. Any further thoughts on which direction from Lane's cove? I'm in too. Winds predicted at 8-10kn early, but 12kn later, so I suspect we should head towards Crane's (SE) for a free ride back? Ern
  10. Hi.Doug, I'm.a.strong.maybe...This.keyboard's.broken.spacebar.will.just.have.to.wait! Ern
  11. If not - I'll be paddling solo out of Plymouth Harbor and south to White Horse and other beaches and back. WOuld love company or idea of another trip! Forgot about your South Shore preference.... Have any updates re venue or agenda? If several of us venture south from the North Shore it may make sense to carpool a bit as the ride back up 93N will be horrendous on Sunday eve. Guess I'm lobbying for a Boston Harbor Island tour from Winthrop. We could even split the put-ins and have the northern folks leave from Winthrop and meet you putting in from Hull? Hmmm.... Ern
  12. WOuld love company or idea of another trip! Deb Hi Deb, I'm probably up for a nice paddle Sunday as well. Boston Harbor Island tour from Winthrop? Lane's Cove/Crane's? Prefer L3/4 but the weather looks pretty benign. Welcome James! Could you take a peak at the Trip Level criteria on the site and note where you think you're comfortable? If you're unsure and can make one of the Skills Sessions posted on the calendar one of our friendly experts will help point you, as well chat about our CAM model. That said, so far Mother Nature shouldn't be slapping us around too much on Sunday. Also, what's your kayak? Ern
  13. They had one Force Cat 4 left in C/K for $2499. which is less than I paid for a FG version at the end of last season. Gene, Here's your chance for a cheap C/K upgrade! Buy it and sell your FG ONLY if it isn't Red over White so we can tell ours apart, eh? Ern
  14. Doug, Thanks again for putting together a fine paddle. I'll look forward to repeating this trip when I get a better seat in my Vaag, for which I'll send you a PM. Ern
  15. Christopher, Really sorry I couldn't make it. Had to set up my new 'yak for a longer trip today. Hope to paddle with you soon. Ern
  16. Bob, If you or anyone wishes to carpool I'll be leaving West Medford on the early side (by 8:30) in order to meander a bit up Rte 1 in ME. RSVP ASAP at 781 483-3922. Cheers. Ern
  17. Hey Gene, Thought you might want to emulate this guy's bracing: Ern
  18. Hi Doug! I'm a maybe if I can get out of an important brunch party.... Ern
  19. (Why do you almost always address me as Geoffrey, I wonder? Hmmm...) Egg on MY face, indeed. Somehow I have a brain-break and combine your names into one wrong one. So sorry.... Interestingly, Leon arrived late, so I too only ventured out to the mouth solo, as indeed the wind picked up. Not a day to be out alone.... Ern
  20. Yeah, I saw that, and was tempted except for the travel commitment. Let's move this discussion with Pintail to another thread...?
  21. In a variant of our paddle last Thursday, Leon and I launched in brisk winds yesterday, he suggesting we head west for an easier trip home later. But I wanted the variety of heading northeast, and we were both surprised to find calmer waters in the lee of the cliffs and paddled up to lunch in Magnolia Harbor. Likewise only light chop and the predicted 15-18knot winds pushed us around as we rounded Kettle. But as we headed west through very the more open crossing we started to get hammered with 20-25kn WNW gusts and 2-3ft chop for most of the way, so it was quite a bit of work. When we got very close to shore the winds abated, providing a more relaxed last leg, wherein I repeatedly got stuck while threading through the maze of rocks, patiently awaiting enough water to push off and finally get through. Manchester Harbor was filled with complaining kids getting blown around throughout their sailboat lessons. Maybe only 12-13knots distance, on a beautiful, brisk, cooler day. I kept up with Leon, who didn't yawn a lot, so I guess I did ok. Next time I'll use my wing and REALLY show him!
