  1. Thanks for looking into that, John. I gave the NOAA archived data a whirl but it was a very cumbersome exercise and hard to interpret. Also, thank you for the correction of New Year's eve. Karen
  2. Could anyone give me a link to find weather (including snow fall data, if possible) and coastal conditions in prior months? The current NOAA marine coastal forecasts go back until Jan 1. But I'm having difficulty finding data past that. In particular, I was trying to look at wind and current data for the time during which the Brown student who was paddling out of Marion, MA was found missing this past Christmas eve. This is reminiscent of the two young women pulled into the Nantucket sound, lost in the fog a few years ago. This student was wearing Carhart pants, carrying a gun to hunt ducks and (maybe) PFD on a winter day. A supposed outdoorsman, but I not a paddler taking reasonable precautions. Thanks for the help. Karen
  3. I would like to attend. Please post the confirmed meeting time. Thanks, Karen Gladstone
  4. I use a Life Proof case around my iPhone 5 stowed in a cell phone dry bag mostly for the floatation were I to drop it. I put the whole thing in my day hatch. I have stowed it on my deck with no problems to check out a GPS app but would rather just use it for emergencies. There is also a tether point on the case on which I put a very small, strong cord and tiny carabiner to clip to something were I to drop it when in use on my deck. For ten dollars, Life Proof will give you a guarantee that if your phone gets trashed while properly in a case (don't ask how they assess that), they will replace the iPhone. I have good luck with the Life Proof case but I am careful too. Karen
  5. It's gonna take more than a welder's electrode container to do that but I VERY much appreciate the info! Of course, it's nowhere to be found at Home Depot or at Lowes-they are out of stock. Only on special order.
  6. I have been told by a few people that you can get the fecal container at Home Depot as a "welder's tool box container". But I have tried multiple times at multiple stores with no luck. What I can find is PVC piping and one can cut it, thread a permanent female to one end and a removable male to other for secure travel. Also, for the average woman eater, how wide/long makes sense for say, a 5 day excursion? What is the rule of thumb? Could anyone help me out here? Thanks, Karen

  9. Hi Peter - i will likely join your group tomorrow. Would possibly like to do more miles but will have a hard time making the L3 take off. Can you bring your novorca stick? Karen
  10. I"m planning on coming (from Lawrence) barring some calamity at work. See you then Karen G
  11. I use contact lens containers for small quantities of pills, creams, ointments. You would be amazed at how much they can hold. They are small and completely water tight. Karen
  12. I swam in Cape Cod Bay this weekend with full wet suit and neoprene hood. Though I did not have my thermometer with me, I'm a pretty good gauge of temps. If I lose motor control of my pinkies if it's below 64 degrees. So I'm guessing it's around 65 now. One month ago, I paddled and rolled with a dry suit and measured the temp at 56. Karen
  13. Any chance you all could leave a little later? my sunday paddling plan fell through. Karen
  14. I'm going to try and make it. Peter - could you please bring your fiberglass greenland paddle? I'd like to try it out. Thanks, Karen G
  15. i'd like to join but the launch at 930 is a little daunting from Arlington. I can be paddling until later if anyone wants to extend the journey but it looks like the winds are higher in the afternoon. Will look at the message board tomorrow and post here or communicate with Liz on my potential arrival. Karen Gladstone
  16. i paddled in the essex basin today out of conomo point. they weren't bad enough to give up a paddle but you might have to be vigilant on the shores. it was worse at conomo and we didn't get bothered at all on the western side of castle neck. it seems a little early for the little monsters. karen
  17. Hi all - would anyone have a small kayak for a 4ft, 50 lb kid that i could borrow or possibly buy? Perhaps a piccolo or something similar? I'm in Arlington Thanks, Karen
  18. Thank you to Doug, Nancy, Fred and all the other folks that made the last Greenland rolling session in Portsmouth possible. After being branded last year with having a very messy roll that 'at least works'. I learned how to execute a "proper" greenland roll and picked up other important pearls along the way. Thanks again-that was very helpful and confidence building! Karen
  19. doug - please sign me up for this. 5'5", 132 lbs. i plan to bring my own boat since that's what i'll be rolling. but i'm happy to learn technique with the other boats. Karen Gladstone

  22. Hi and thanks for your response. Could you please tell me what "WS piccolo if you want" means? Thank you. Karen
