  4. Two local scientists/kayakers have figured out that muscle cramps are caused by over-firing neurons and they're developing a product to treat. https://player.vimeo.com/video/134738687 It's also an interesting scenario - clearly they made it back to shore, but I would love to know if they did something special to paddle back with the cramps.
  5. Does anyone know if there is still a parking fee at Stage Fort in Gloucester in the off season? Is it the off season yet? Thanks,
  6. I'm up for this as long as this thing I have doesn't turn into a real cold.
  7. Thank you to everyone - I'm glad to have it behind me! I should clarify that the assessment actually occurred in 3 star conditions. We just happened to also be in 5 star conditions that day as well!
  8. Sterling, Reg Lake and the whole Sterling team are producing amazing kayaks that are incredibly innovative and on the cutting edge of what's possible in a kayak. Their everyday boats are lightweight, beautiful and with hull designs that are unlike most of what you see in the industry. I love my Illusion and am happy to make it available if someone wants to demo.
  9. Proud to let everyone know that Robert (aka the bearded recluse who won't stop talking) has passed his BCU 4 star assessment. Many of you probably also know Matt Kane from NY - he also passed this weekend. Congratulations to both!
  10. Liz, Irina and Thomas+1, you are on our list. Robert is somewhere in a kayak Downeast right now and will be back late Sunday. He will contact everyone early next week. Please feel free to PM me if you have any questions in the meantime.
  11. Okay! Send your float plan info asap to me via PM or email cathyfolster at Verizon dot net
  12. I'm in! Weekend island getaway sounds awesome!
  13. Please send me your float plan info if you have not already. Will send coordination email to everyone tomorrow, but this trip is definite!
  14. Peter, Thank you for posting this trip. It was my first night paddle and I was nervous because of the waves that can materialize out of nowhere in that section of coast, but you, Robert and Mike helped a lot! I do have to say, Mike was more than goosed by that wave. The waves were not very wide, so I was just 10 feet away and saw him suddenly faced by a wave rearing up in front of him. He continued to paddle and rode the top of it until he and his boat were well over my head! I lost sight of him in the spray and then he reappeared and came down the other side! It was an impressive feat that he stayed upright! I was more than happy to follow Peter east through the remainder of the waves popping up instead of trying to continue through them. This was a delightful evening and I plan to do it again! Grainy pic, but only one I took . . .
  15. Point forecast outside of Peaks for Saturday - Variable winds 5 kt or less. Sunny. Seas around 1 ft.!!! What an awesome day to paddle in Casco Bay!
  16. Al, This is an L3 trip mostly due to location. If the seas are up that day, the back side of Peaks/Diamonds can be bouncy (and we would make a group decision whether to go there, or stay inside the islands for calmer water). If the wind is up, it can be challenging paddling between islands. If we paddled around behind Peaks and out around Great Diamond, the mileage would be just over 9 miles. We will tailor the mileage to the group's preferences that day, but it won't be an extremely long mileage trip. It's more about the stops, scenery and exploring the islands.
  17. Al, My plans have changed and I'm now free Saturday, so I'd like to join you as well! Cathy
  18. Launch from East End Beach at 10am Paddle to Fort Gorges and explore the fort for a bit Paddle to Peaks Island - lunch and ice cream Possible paddle around the Diamonds or just around the back of Peaks Probably return around 4pm Parking is available at the launch as well as bathrooms and changing area. The fort is quite old and can have glass and crumbling areas. You might want to bring a pair of sneakers to put on when we get there as opposed to paddling shoes. Peaks has a great ice cream shop. Bring your lunch, or get something at the island. There’s a few shops there too. This will be a CAM trip. Google Map location of East End Beach: https://maps.google.... 04101&t=m&z=15 This trip is weather dependent in that I will cancel for likely fog and/or thunderstorms. Will paddle in rain, however! Please reply here or PM me if interested.
  19. Thank you Robert and Kevin for guiding me into those rocks by the break wall. I think many people might look forward to that area just north outside the wall, but I have always given it a wide berth (sometimes too wide; sorry Robert). It may have been a feeble attempt, but it was nice to put myself someplace I've always been scared of. And Pru that pink is my new North Face rain jacket. Not exactly kayak gear, but it kept me dry!
