  1. I think I have the answer to my own question: I think if I picture the curve that is presented to the water, it's not straight up and down in the water (like a keel is), but on its side a bit. A curved edge, propelled forwards, is going to move in the direction of the front of the curve, which is opposite of the way you're edging. If you were to edge on that same side and paddle backwards, the back of the boat would go in a direction opposite the edge. If there was absolutely no force exerted on the boat by propulsion wind or wave, and you could edge at the exact center of a symmetrical curve (only exists on sterling kayaks to my knowledge and still not possible because we're human), the boat would not move. ps does anyone else make a Kayak that's symmetrical front to back?
  2. Been continuing to think about this and wondering if it's more about what your body is doing than the boat profile presented to the water. Maybe combo of both.
  3. More specifically, why does it turn right on a left edge and left on a right edge. Perhaps everyone understands this, but I don't understand the physics behind this. i understand you're causing a shorter profile, and that profile is curved, but I can't make the connection from there. Can someone enlighten me?
  4. Congratulations to the newest crop of 5 Stars: Robert Folster, Gerry Polinsky and Jennifer Yearley. It may now be called Advanced Sea Kayak Leader, but they earned their stars!
  5. Robert and I will be there. We can bring 3 extra pfd's, 2 extra spray skirts, 2 bilge pumps and 2 boats.
  6. In case you didn't hear me yell out from the kitchen-I'm going. ?
  7. I'm available to help. Will send you an email.

  9. Sounds good - I like the idea of the moving classroom.
  10. I'd like to encourage everyone - especially newer paddlers to take advantage of this FREE opportunity being provided as a benefit to NSPN members. You don't have to be an experienced paddler and you don't have to have any prior leadership experience. It's a great way to spend a cold, snowy Saturday in February. Come inside where it's warm and work on your paddling mojo!
  11. Thank you everyone for a great trip. I was looking for any excuse not to go because it is cold and I'm tired and it's a lot of work, and, and, and. But I forced myself because I've always been glad once I'm on the water, and this time was no exception. Trips are made better by great paddling buddies -and this was a fun group-thanks for being on the water! The mesmerizing sky and sea, and the calls of the loons along with it being the day after New Years made it a very contemplative paddle-at least on the outbound leg. The return was just enough water movement to make you have to mostly pay attention. it was great to launch from this normally inaccessible beach -sorry about the length of carry! Looking forward to next year!
  12. I'd like to still launch from Good Harbor because you don't get to launch from there very often. I'm fine with going north or south from there. Ooops, forgot to add - I am now free to go - no work for me!
  13. Oh all right, I'll go! Got a new warm thing to try out.
  14. Anyone up for eggplant, sky, ocean, mantis or lichen?
  15. NSPN MidWinter/Cabin Fever Breakout Party and Members Annual Meeting, Saturday, January 28, 2017 Gould Barn 5 pm Members Meeting 6 pm to whenever Party! I know, I know, it's still 2016 and we haven't gotten through all the holiday parties flooding social calendars at this time of year. But 2017 is just around the corner, which means that our annual party and general members meeting is just around maybe two corners. Please mark on your calendars! The NSPN Members Annual Meeting will precede the party. It's an opportunity for club members to hear about what's being planned for the new year, to ask questions, provide ideas and have input into the club's functioning. The club is YOU, so please come! As always, the party that follows will feature food (provided potluck by our estimable chef paddler members...which is to say everyone who attends), music, slide show and AWESOME CHARITY RAFFLE of kayaking related stuff and ART WORK generously donated by members and friends - all proceeds of which benefit MITA, MCHT and Salem Sound Watch. As I have the past couple of years, I'm reaching out to artists and photographers to donate a piece of your work. We have relied on the same few generous people each year, but we know that there are many others of you who take great photos or paint or whatever. Please consider joining in and donating! Art works have been just about the most popular raffle items and we'd really like to expand the repertoire. Anyone willing to donate should contact either Janice or Pru. So...mark the date and come and enjoy the fun! Newer members particularly encouraged - it's a great way to meet fellow paddlers! Pru Baxter and Janice Cotton, NSPN party committee
