  1. Its totally ugly, but I've had good luck sealing such cracks using either West System marine epoxy (dries clear) or marine caulk, (dries white, and looks like bathtub caulk only much tougher). I'd probably try the epoxy if you want it to show less, and it is very good at sealing small cracks. I'm not sure how long it will last, so far 2 years for me...
  2. Please count me in! Beth
  3. Warren; Thank you so much for sharing your kayaking and life lesson journey with us!
  4. I think I get it but I'd have to see it to be certain about what you mean, however I will say that filing plastic or even just gently sanding it works fine for smoothing out sharp edges. Not a silly question!
  5. That sounds fantastic Warren, and thank you for sharing your adventure with us. I hope to paddle in that region sometime in the near future, I've been to the area for hiking trips but have never kayaked there. It is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been.
  6. I'm in, I'll Pm you my details, thanks! Beth
  7. I'm interested, I'll try calling you again tomorrow for details.
  8. I'm planning to go, want to keep working on my roll! Anyone else? Ps. love your avatar Pru!
  9. A great time, I learned a LOT, and will remember my paddle next time....
  10. Last minute, I'm free and am heading over there now!
  11. Yes, we did share the island with another group, we had one site and they had the other; plenty of room for everyone!
  12. A follow-up to this trip, I returned to this area the 1st weekend of Aug with my sister and her family, it was the perfect trip! We had a blast, and I really appreciated all the planning done by you both Pru and Warren, it made planning a return visit almost effortless. We did a much abbreviated version, camping for 2 nights on Crow (no jerk this time!) and making short excursions from there. Many thanks again to both of you for introducing me to this lovely place. Beth
  13. Pru, Many thanks for your lovely write-up of our trip, with some great pictures! In spite of the "jerk" encounter, (which you got the worst of, the rest of us didn't actually have to deal with him) the day and the weekend were beautiful and really special. I for one was very happy to have discovered this area, and will certainly be returning. Many thanks to you and Warren for organizing the weekend, and thanks to all for a great time!
  14. Just looks like a great day! I was at the greenland festival in NY, so I missed this one (can't do everything!
  15. Hmm, it looks just like the fiberglass Camano I had in the mid 90's, it had a black shaft also...
  16. Pru, Thanks for a wonderful trip report, and thanks to both you and Warren for a fabulous weekend, what a great birthday present! Really a very special time; I look forward to our next outing. Beth
  17. Looks like a LOT of fun! Can you tell me exactly when/where you meet up? I'd be coming up from Boston so it's a bit of a drive, but I'd like to try to come at least a couple of times this summer. I've tryed a bit of surf paddling in the past, but have never gotten any good at it, I'd like to learn. Beth
  18. Unfortunately I won't be able to make it after all, had to change my plans for this weekend. Have a great trip!
  19. Thanks Pru for your beautiful write-up; although I didn't get to go, reading this helps me to imagine a great weekend, and look forward even more to getting back out there. Beth
  20. Yes, it was excellent, many thanks!
  21. I was sick, so sorry I missed it! looks like fun...
  22. I love the MSR pocket rocket for most purposes, light and simple. It simmers well and the fuel canisters are reasonably compact. The liquid fuel stoves with pump and remote (refillable) fuel bottle canisters are best for winter; cold and very windy weather. The fuel lasts longer, pump means you can always keep the fuel pressure constant, and the remote fuel bottle means you can put a windscreen around the entire burner without worrying about overheating the fuel canister. They were really designed for mountaineering, melting tons of snow, etc. Seriously high BTU's, BUT they are more fiddly; most people prefer simple canister stoves for 3 season use. I like the MSR because you can use it with any pot, but the Jet boil/Reactor type setups are faster and more efficient for boiling water. If that is all you are planning to do get one of those, otherwise I'd look at the canister stoves.
  23. Hi Pru; Are you located anywhere near N Cambridge? I'd be happy to show you my setups (one inside the garage and one outside, both against the garage wall) which might give you ideas on how to do yours. I'd probably go with simple racks attached to the posts myself, but hanging loops would work too. I've "built" many simple setups in various locations over the years, I'd be glad to give you some tips.
  24. I like to use the thin 1mm glacier gloves, they have enough dexterity that I don't have to take them off much if at all; so my hands never have to get dunked in the freezing cold water. Then I wear a pair of large nylon shell mittens with thick fleece liners over the glacier gloves, for added warmth. They get wet but it doesn't seem to matter much, my hands stay warm anyway. Occasionally I take off the mittens, wring the fleece liners out and then put them back in the shells. I suppose I could wear neoprene mittens instead, I haven't tried it. I don't really like pogies that much, just something about having my hands strapped to the paddle...
