NSPN CAM Paddling Trips Workshop

Recommended Posts

All NSPN members are invited to participate in NSPN's CAM PADDLING TRIPS WORKSHOP. This is a three day program: one full- day classroom session and two full-day on- the-water sessions, designed to review a recommended set of club paddling practices, adapted to the Common Adventure Model (CAM) our current framework for running club paddling trips.

This program will be in the tradition of NSPN's Trip Leader Training Program of the past: club members getting together, with experienced NSPN paddlers and presenters "passing it forward", with the goal of sharing a set of common club paddling norms . Members may then share this material ("pass it forward") on subsequent paddles and club events , so that we may further work towards a common culture of club paddling .

1) CAM PADDLING TRIPS WORKSHOP

Saturday, May 8, 9AM-5PM

Parker River Visitor Center, Newburyport

2)"MOVING ON THE WATER" part 1

Saturday May 22, 9AM-4PM

Riverhead Beach, Marblehead

3) "MOVING ON THE WATER" Part 2

Saturday June 5 9AM to 4PM

Odiorne Point Boat Launch, Rye, NH

More detailed information and a syllabus of each days session will be posted shortly.

All members are welcome to attend any one, two, or all three workshops. It will be enjoyable!

RSVP's will be required, as we will need to know how many people will be attending each session.

Send RSVP's to: Peter Brady at pbrady at neaq dot org or by PM here on the NSPN website.

If you have any questions , please post on the business forum of the message board, or contact any member of the CAM commitee:

Peter Brady, Rob Hazard, Sal Puglisi, Ross Bartosik, Suzanne Hutchinson, Scott Camlin.

This sounds fabulous! A cross between the "old" NSPN (see my post elsewhere) and the new/CAM NSPN. And the instructors (those I know) are highly qualified, with tons of training and experience and a variety of paddling and instructor certs. Why, there's even a representative of that "old" NSPN training -- the one and only Scott Camlin!

Highly recommended. Really, everybody who plans to paddle on club trips should consider taking this. And, it'll move your own skills up a notch or two.

We plan to cover the essentials of running a successful CAM trip following a rough outline which begins with what you need to know before you post a trip (launch, tides, route, etc.) and continues through organization, Beach Briefings, then how a group of paddlers moves on the water, whether it's a calm bay with motorboat traffic or an exposed coast or a foggy afternoon among islands and channels.

We also want to go into elements of incident management, rescues, and dealing with whatever comes up in the course of a day on the water.

AND we want to discuss how each of these stages and elements differs depending on whether the trip is led by a commercial guide or is following the Common Adventure Model.

Our target audience is people who post trips on the club message board or would like to, as well as people who want to go paddling with other club members and want to know what to expect. That's pretty much the whole club!

Should these events be posted on the Calendar?

The May 8 session has been added to the calendar. The two on-the water sessions ("Moving on the Water" Parts 1 & 2) will be added in the next day or two.(the wheels move slowly at NSPN Central Headquarters).

These sessions are for all members.

Great that you all are coming:

Please note that this workshop is not at the Gould Barn, but at the Parker River Visitors center in Newburyport , which is just across the street from the Joppa Flats Audubon Center on the road from downtown Newburyport to Plum Island.

Thanks!

I'll try and make it sometime between breakfast and lunch. Should we bring our own lunch or is NSPN hosting? (just kidding). Since we won't be on the water for this one can I bring my beer? (not kidding)

No beer, not sure what the facility allows but do bring your own lunch.

I will make a large coffee cake to go with the coffee that Bill is bringing!
