Against the Current on the Piscataqua River - Interested?
Sue H. replied to William Doucet's topic in Trips / NSPN Events
Hi Bill, I'd planned on joining this trip, but out of town on this date. I'll be interested in hearing about the adventure ! Sue -
Hi Folks, Hi Everyone, The sea state forecast for Sunday is sporty. With potential seas at 4 ft, this trip would fall into the NSPN category of a Level 4 Trip. The route as described under the projected sea state is likely not to provide an opportunity for Level 2 and possibly Level 3 paddlers. I would like to offer an opportunity for these paddlers, yet I am hesitant to change the trip location for everyone to avoid a mutiny. So I am offering an alternative to members who are still looking for an adventure, just a less sporty one ! I would invite those to join me for a journey up the York River and later meeting up with the rest of the group at Cape Neddick Lobster Pound for dinner. Be sure to respond as requested below. **Please PM me if you are interested in joining the York River option and indicate if you plan to meet up at the restaurant. **For those remaining in the Cape Neddick group, please pm me if you are planning to eat dinner at the CN Lobster Pound. NOAA forecast for Sunday 10/6/24 as of today Friday 10/4/24 at 6 am : N wind 5 to 10 kt becoming E in the afternoon. Sunny. Seas around 3 ft (wave height is the average height of the highest third of the wave). Windy forecast for Sunday 10/6/24 as of Friday 10/4/24 at 6 am : 4 ft waves and 3 ft swell at ~8.5 seconds in the am, becoming ~13 seconds at 2 pm. Saying you are coming in calendar is not registering ! Please register for this event here https://forms.gle/pnM7VsYgzGwVStZu8. 2) The usual kit needed, an ocean kayak with bulkheads and decklines, a PFD, spray skirt, hydration, sunscreen, food and hat, or helmet if you want to play in rocks. If you have a VHF radio, tow belt, extra paddle and kits to repair boats and bodies, bring them along, but not required. Option #1: North to Perkins Cove (approx. 9 nautical miles round trip). Option #2: North to Perkins Cove and continue on to Ogunquit Beach, with possible surfing (adds an additional 2 nautical miles, 11 nm round trip). Option #3: Add to either trip above a short trip out to Cape Neddick Light, 1.5 nm from the launch and then head north toward Perkins Cove or beyond to Ogunquit Beach. Upon return to our launch site in the afternoon, we will have an early dinner at the Cape Neddick Lobster Pound Restaurant. Folks would be responsible to pay for the dinner of their choice. Here is the link to their menu: https://www.capeneddicklobsterpound.com/menu As always, this trip will be weather dependent, choose “following” in trip posting for potential updates. As of this posting, here is what Windy is forecasting: https://www.windy.com/43.179/-70.575/waves?43.104,-70.575,11,i:pressure Reason for change-of-date: The Cape Neddick Lobster Pound is hosting a 50 person bus tour on Saturday evening and they would not be able to accommodate us all arriving at the same time. They have requested we change the day to Sunday in order to provide us with the best experience. Actually, the weather forecast is better on Sunday, so hopefully this works in everyone's favor ! Looking forward to seeing you there ! Sue

If you have a VHF radio, tow belt, extra paddle and kits to repair boats and bodies, bring them along, but not required. The water temp is around 57 degrees, depending on where you look, so dress for immersion, fully dry tops with an insulating layer and heavy neoprene pants or drysuits are your best bet. Many surf sites are recommending 5mm or above for wet suits at this temperature. Option #1: North to Perkins Cove (approx. 9 nautical miles round trip). The trip is a go as of today, unless the forecast takes a drastic turn for the worst. I am preparing the updated posting and sign-up this morning. -
untilHello Members, NPSN is pleased to offer a Wilderness First Aid training with Todd Johnstone-Wright at the Gould Barn in Topsfield. This 16 hour course is "the perfect course for the outdoor enthusiast or trip leader who wants a basic level of first aid training for short trips with family, friends, and outdoor groups."1 It meets requirements for ACA/BC certifications and Todd will tailor it to the interests and needs of paddlers. The course will be limited to 20 NSPN members and the cost is $235 each. The format will be both whole room lecture and small experiential learning groups, with much of the time spent outdoors (so dress for the weather). Registration is by payment here in our product store. RSVP to this calendar post does not register you for the course! If you need help with registration or payment, email treasurer@nspn.org. Feel free to private message me with any questions. Sue Hriciga, (Sue H.) 1 - https://www.soloschools.com/training-information/

Hi Folks, We are considering a Club Paddle from the Cape Neddick Oceanside Campground launch: Option #1: North to Perkins Cove (approx. 9 nautical miles round trip). Here is the link to their menu: https://www.capeneddicklobsterpound.com/menu As always, this trip would be weather dependent. I would like to get a sense of people's interest in this Club trip. Please express your availability and interest on this thread. If there is enough interest, specific trip details will follow. In addition to paying for your meal, there may be a $5 or $10 parking fee (tbd). Looking forward to hearing from you ! Sue

Hi Prudence and All, I've done a brief search of local shark experts and have a plan to contact a few of them on Monday. I'm hoping to find someone who might do a zoom presentation during the winter months. I'm also looking into someone who might do a zoom presentation on whales and other marine life in our waters. I think the suggestions of grouping up and heading to shallow waters make sense as strategies until we get some expert advice...assuming there is some expert advice out there ! Sue

I plan to be there !

Very likely

It sounds like you all had a trip with dynamic communication and camaraderie…and some good weather too ! What’s not to like ? I would have joined you but for needing the day to reset & rest after a week away paddling. Cheers, Sue

Against the Current on the Piscataqua River - Interested?
Sue H. replied to William Doucet's topic in Trips / NSPN Events
I’d be interested during the off season to avoid boat traffic. I have done smaller sections against the current and mostly eddy hopped…there was one spot where the only way past a short distance was to go under a dock close to the mainland. -
Wednesday Lunch Paddle - Friday 8/2 looking likely
Sue H. replied to prudenceb's topic in Past Trips
I'd prefer Friday, I have a commitment Thursday am and would not be able to arrive anywhere on Cape Ann before 9:45 or 10 am -
This past weekend Janet Lorang and Stephanie Golmon provided a peer based rescue and recovery skills session. I've heard from participants it was a great success. Folks experienced and learned a variety of rescue and recovery techniques, and importantly had a ton of fun ! So join me in extending a special thanks to Janet and Steph ! It's great that we have experienced folks who share and support all the important skills we need for safe and enjoyable paddling. Also, thank you participants who are committed to developing and maintaining your skill set ! Cheers, Sue
