Jim, After thinking I was mitigating an anticipated low charge and routinely cradling my radio, having a battery fail, I had a similar conversation with a tech and now follow Gary's practice. I may have to charge the radio twice per season if I've mistakenly left it on between paddles.

It prompted me to look for an alternative to the longer lines like Prudence referenced. See links below. One is bolt on under the hood, but the challenge on many vehicles is the amount of plastic. Covid-19 paddling: on this trip we will strictly observe social distancing and MA state recreational boating guidelines for the pandemic. Please research and respect all regulations that apply at the time of the paddle. In particular, we will stay at least 6 feet apart, minimize sharing docks and ramps with others, and wear face masks while off the water in public use areas—no exceptions on mask wearing except for a medical reason. Hey Matt, I may take you up on this. Live in southern NH. In the meantime I recently purchased a new Epic Full Carbon Small-Mid Wing. I'm paddling it with a Stellar S16S and occasionally with my Cetus on exercise paddles. Love the paddle but it is extraordinarily slippery, especially compared with my Werner cf blades. I have experimented with surfer's wax but find it wears off rather quickly. Any thoughts? David

Josko, to clarify, my issue was with the four piece where the moving part at the blade is metal and is a simple insert. Realized after posting yours may be the two piece and as Rob indicated needs to be shipped back. Good luck!

Greetings Midtempo! Thanks for keeping the conversation going. In my opinion, one of the challenges of managing the pandemic and tailoring the response by locale is the resulting confusion. I get that and frankly find it very tough to manage at times. My only point was the categorization of the Essex response as including paranoia and exclusivity. None of us have been down this road before and will undoubtedly stub our toes as we figure out how to move forward safely and responsibly. The pandemic is real and clearly not fully understood. People have gotten sick and died. I'm currently writing from Florida where the reopening has been very messy and confusing. Just think we in the human community need to cut each other a bit extra slack through this. Looking forward to returning soon and getting on the water (rocks and surf). Hopefully we can hook up on a future paddle. Cheers! David

Respectfully, there are other rationales beyond "getting all town-meeting paranoid and exclusive." The seasonal influx of tourists, combined with the current and significant public health considerations, the decisions of a small town are many and complex. Cheers!

Ken, I agree with all of the sage and learned wisdom above. But, to get a bit more product specific on the treatment of the business/point of the screws. On those compasses I've installed myself on composite P&H boats, I've not used gaskets and have used the supplied screws. For covering the points, I've used the J-B Weld product (see description below) advertised for plumbing applications. It's comes as a two-part solid in a plastic tube. It's very easy to work with by combining the two parts and mixing in your hands (gloves are useful). In my experience its much less messy than applying epoxy, and cures very quickly. At about the consistency of a moderately-chewed piece of bubble gum, it can be divided into amounts for each screw point. applied over the tips, and formed to a smooth texture. I've also gone back before fully cured and smoothed it with a wet finger. Total application time, less than 20 minutes with barely any cleanup required. And... the unused product is a nice addition to a repair kit due to the curing time. WaterWeld™ will plug or seal leaks and patch holes and cracks in almost anything. Ideal for repairing plumbing, fuel tanks, tub and shower, drains, pool and spa, boats and potable water tanks; setup occurs even under water. After curing, it can be drilled, tapped, filed, sanded and painted. WaterWeld™ has a set time of 15-25 minutes and sets hard in one hour. WaterWeld™ cures to an off-white color, is rated at a tensile strength of 1300 PSI and will withstand temperatures up to 300ºF.
