The issue with free parking is that there is a sign that tells you to get a parking pass from the main gate or they will ticket you. (I don't know if anybody has ever gotten a ticket). That said it might be better if they left someone at the gate for the people that have to pay the $5.00 instead of making people go to the other gate or possibly get a ticket.

Sounds great, I am going to attempt to get to Walden Friday. I paid the the State the $35 for parking this spring and just haven't made it to Walden enough this year. Thanks for the reminder.

I was hoping to got but if it's not safe for immersion, I think that I will head home if I can't work on my roll.
Is this the last week of Mystic Lakes this year? I just looked at the Calendar and Sept is blank.
Thanks -Jason

A level 3 paddle isn't an issue for me, I very much like ocean paddling thus North or South shore is fine with me.
I just brought up Quabbin as you were looking for suggestions and that's one place I would like to get to this year (I still don't know how they let people near it since 9/11. Thus I figure that it will close some day soon).
I just paddled with Bob Budd's S&G out of Lanes Cove today and it was a great trip and location. I wouldn't mind doing that again.

I would like to attend the trip if it is on the 3rd. I am up for most anything in MA. North or south shore is great.
A location I have been thinking about for some time is Quabbin ( http://www.mass.gov/dfwele/dfw/dfw_quabbin.htm ). To paddle on the Quabbin we would each need fishing licenses at $5.00 each plus $4.00 per car to park. If you are thinking of entertaining Quabbin I can get more information and post it.

The message board isn't doing the sending. It's just a mailto link that the browser then starts your default e-mail client. Thus the e-mail is being sent from your work e-mail address.

I can do this weekend, but I am in NY during the week next week. I can do any day the 14th to the 21st if it is a week day I just need to schedule the vacation time.

I would very much like to attend the trip. I would just need to know when when this trip is scheduled for.
The NSPN Calender is empty for this weekend. if you are thinking of doing the trip this weekend I am sure that other would also like to attend.

Based on all of this great input I have decided to do the following.
I am going to attempt to paddle Friday with just a paddle float as a back band.
At the same time I am going to order the Immersion Research reggie backband. If I don't like it for my Shadow I can always put it in my new (to me) WW boat.
If the paddle float and reggie backbands don't work out I will attempt to create a back band out of closed cell.
I like the closed cell idea in that it will add flotation and reduce the volume of the cockpit.
The issue is that I am not very good at carving the foam. I hate to say hour many hours I have spent to make closed cell foot rests and they are 10% as complicated as the back band. Along with these excellent suggestions on the message board I also received an e-mail from Richard Najarian he made a closed cell back band and covered it with "PlastiDip" the back band looks like Roles Royce of back band replacements.
If Brian hosts his kayak modification session again next year, I think that I will attempt the closed cell back band there where people that are good at foam work can guide me.
Thanks again for all of the excellent advice -Jason

I am looking to replace the back band that is currently in my Nigel Foster shadow. The current back band is made out of hard plastic with some padding in the center. The stock back band cuts my back. Luckily, the sharks haven't started following me yet. I love the boat but I hate the back band.
I am looking for suggestions for a good new one or am I better building one off the bulkhead out of mini cell?
Thanks -Jason

My wife's 2002 Jetta does not have rain gutter but under the rubber molding of each door there are two round roof rack connectors that the Jetta roof racks attach to. I can take pictures and post them if you would like.

I know people like the Surge due it's weight and all. But this is getting out of hand two of the same boat. Do people expect that we won't be on the lookout for someone with a new Surge.

I think the fit of the shadow 100% depends on your body size/shape. For me the shadow is anything but cavernous, I just sqeek into it and very much enjoy the boat. I wouldn't mind if the aft deck was an inch lower but I love the boat.

A direct link http://www.kokatat.com/instruction2g1.htm
From the page "Store your suit with the zipper completely open except the last four inches. This will help alleviate pressure on the sealing elements. Protect the zipper from being folded sharply, creased or crimped. If hanging the suit, use a thick armed hanger, or hang by the waist, like trousers."

Speeking of VA I will be in VA (near DC) for almost two week for trainning. I was thinking of bringing my boat and attempting to find people to go paddling with. Do you know of a website like this for the VA/DC area?
Thanks -Jason

If your going for the hearse you will have to trade in your ocean boat for a WW or surf boat then you should be able to fit it. If are not looking to make that conversion and are keeping your ocean boat you will need one of the ultra stretched Suburban, Hummer or the like to fit your ocean boat into it. I don't think that the ultra stretched vehicle will help your parking I am afraid.
As for the speed of the hearse I think that there are upgrades that can be done. Even with the upgrades I don't know if it will ever be a good drag racing and yak hauling device but it should fit a ww boat or two.

I would be a little skeptical regarding the JIS-7 on these, there was an issue earlier this year with West Marine radios not being up to JIS-7 standards thus they were giving dry bags or allowing returns/refunds if you have one.

Thank you very much, the link you provided works! There search page doesn't bring up your link, I guess they like providing people the link to the $91 version.
I have one on order now.
