  1. Mark, there is a reason that I am looking for someone else to teach kayak packing.

This is how I explain why I am still not qualified to pack a kayak for trips:

Growing up I used to Canoe camp with my family and we had 3 old town trippers ( http://www.oldtowncanoe.com/canoes_tripper.php ). Each year we would go to the Alagash for two weeks, paddle the lakes and the river. (One year we took 3 weeks and also paddled the lakes back in the reverse direction back to the car, that year we saw 49 moose and 17 dear).

Canoe camping you get trained that you should always over pack. A loaded canoe doesn't have the windage issues of an empty one and as it floats the extra weight wasn't an issue.

We used to have large cooler full of frozen food (The largest cooler that would fit in the boat). I still think that the chicken cooked over the fire at round pond was the best chicken I have ever had.

We would also have large totes for the dry food, stove cooking pots etc. In case you had to stay at a camp site for more than one night (In the past we had large storms with chop too large for a loaded canoe which would extend the trip). We always carried extra food to prevent an extend trip being an issue. Along with the normal spare food you would though spare bags of, potatoes, onions carrots in where there was extra space between the totes.

Thus moving from my Old Town tripper that could hold 1,100 LBS to my Nigel Foster Shadow was a culture shock packing for the Knubble Bay Camping trip. Packing for that trip I decided that my backpack was able to hold more than my boat.

All that said I am ready for the kayak packing class.

  2. In February we are organizing a workshop covering:

    Kayak Repair and Outfitting

    A Gear Swap

    and Kayak packing.

At this point in time Gerry Smith, Brian Nystrom and Michael Brokenshire have everything covered except for the Kayak Packing Section.

I am looking for somone with kayak camping experience to demonstrate how to pack a kayak for a camping trip.

If you are willing to volunteer for this, please e-mail me @ jason at kates dot org

    Thanks -Jason

  3. >As an addendum to my original post, how did you prepare it

    >for shipping? Just bubble wrap or something else as well?

The 1st of my Nigel Foster shadow kayak was shipped via Forward Air and it was wrapped in bubble wrap and cardboard then bagged. Along with a few dozen fragile insured high value etc 1' x 1' bright red stickers on it.

Ihe boat was smashed in transit, thus I suggested the other carrier. If you are going to ship the kayak via Forward Air I would suggest having it boxed in a heavy weight box. I figure that they put something heavy on my kayak such as an engine block, so be prepared.

  4. My understanding is that it is also be done in a sea kayak. I decided to learn the back deck roll after watching WW videos.

In the video they were rolling up faster than I can setup with my normal roll. I am not intrested in keeping my head dry but I am sure some people are.

Thanks for the web page, I will test it out in the pool session Sat.

    Thanks -Jason

  5. Do anybody know of a video that covers the back deck roll?

I have the Kent Ford video "The Kayak Roll" that covers the normal roll but not the back deck roll.

During last weekends pool session I was able make progress with my offside roll.

Hopefully after Saturday's pool session I will need another item to think about instead of my offside. Thus I would like to order a video to get me started.

If you don't know of a video but have a web-page or a book would also be very useful.

    Thanks for the advice -Jason

  6. The trip has been canceled due to the current weather forcast as it just won't be fun:

NW WINDS 20 TO 25 KT WITH GUSTS UP TO 30 KT... BECOMING W

15 TO 20 KT WITH GUSTS UP TO 25 KT EARLY IN THE AFTERNOON...THEN

BECOMING SW 10 TO 15 KT IN THE LATE EVENING AND OVERNIGHT. SEAS 5 TO

8 FT...SUBSIDING TO 3 TO 5 FT IN THE LATE EVENING AND OVERNIGHT.

I was wondering if anybody is up for a trip around Cape Ann? I was thinking launching at the High school at 10:00 AM. A late lunch at Thacher then back to the cars before dark.

This trip is dependent on the weather.

Please let me know if you would like to join me. Standard S&G rules apply.

  7. If this is not appropriate please let me know I will delete the message.

This is the messages that I was e-mailed (edited for Spelling as a few people have pointed out the type-o that was in the e-mail).

Maybe you already knew this, but it shocked me to learn that Gorton's, based as we all know, in a Massachussetts town that derives a significant amount of income from whale-watch tourism, is owned and operated by a Japanese whaling company!

Please follow the link below to add your name to a petition asking Groton to put pressure on it's parent company to stop the planned slaughter of 1000 whales in the name of "science," exploiting a legal-loophole in the international ban on whaling. And stop buying any frozen fish sticks from them until they do!

I thank you and the whales thank you.

  8. >If anyone has any experience with, or tried to install a

    >foot-operated bilge pump (See URL:

John, I purchased my Shadow with a guzzler 500 installed. Between the location and not being able to pickup water until it was a 1.5" high it never worked out correctly.

I later replaced the foot pump with an electric pump. That was of limited use as it needed .5" of water as the water doesn't collect by my toes. I have to have enough water in my boat to sitting in a couple of inches of water before the pump was of any use.

I have since removed the electric pump and have plugged the holes. I now have to cover my temporary repairs with fiberglass and gel coat.

In short I would recomend against a foot pump.

  9. Adam (The Monster) is looking for royalty-free aerial photos. I am guessing he needs them for his next article.

Google is not royalty-free if you look at the bottom of the maps it is Copy right sign (I don't know how to make one in a web form) 2005 Google ....

Mark (The Other Monster) had pointed me to this site for charts before (I would have to lookup the exact link)

    http://www.mass.gov/mgis/

Adam if they don't have the photos your looking for on the mgis site I would give them a call.
