I am hoping to be over this cold enough to get on the water Sunday, any chance that your going Sunday too? Thanks -Jason
  3. My understanding is the terminal in Everett is owned by a different company than the one that is looking to put a terminal on the Outer Brewster. Even if the terminal is built on Outer Brewster the LNG tankers will still go to the terminal in Everett. If this is an energy use topic I suggest the we have this thread focus on the following: Wind Mills. Residential Co-generation. Bio Diesel. Synthetic Diesel from Coal.
  4. Any chance that you will bring Mike's shadow. I understand that it will be on the water again if he gets a new seat. :-)
  5. [pre] I would like to be penciled into a spot for Sunday the 26th (If the spots are filled up I should be bumped before someone else is put on the waiting list). I will be in DC for work the 23 though the 25th and 80% chance of heading back on on the 25th. For my boat (Nigel Foster shadow), I would like to fix my skeg. Create a spot under the deck for my hand pump. (Brian can I purchase the clips for this from you?). And if the ventilation is up for it I would like to: Repair my gelcoat. Remove the remainder of my foot pump by: Fiberglass my bulkhead Fiberglass my deck. putting gelcoat on my deck. Thanks -Jason [/pre]
  6. Just off the Natick/Framingham exit is Homedepo in one direction and the other direction is Shoppers world. -Jason
  7. I am looking to lean how to do a back deck roll. A back deck roll is a roll starting on the back deck ending on the front deck. I can already roll up onto my back deck doing a normal sweep roll. -Jason
  8. Does it cover the back deck roll? On the newfound web site this is the description: " 1st Roll DVD by Jay Babina (designer of the Outer Island kayak, $29.95) Learning the Eskimo roll is every kayaker's dream from the moment they venture out on their first paddling experience. The idea of bringing yourself upright from a capsize is not only unique to the design of the kayak but remains one of the utmost safety skills that the sea kayaker can learn. "1st Roll" demonstrates a simplified approach to learning the extended paddle roll, which is the easiest style roll to learn for beginners. 43 minutes. " I don't see any mention of the back deck roll. Thanks -Jason
  9. >Hi Jason, > >I was able to do the one in the video Mike posted in my WW >boat -- I'll show you next time we're both at a pool >session. > >Bob Bob that would be great, I need the help! I keep attempting but I still have had no luck. I am going to China Town on the 11th and I am thinking of signing up for Ipswitch on the 18th. Will you be going to eather of these pool sessions? Thanks -Jason
  10. >Thank you Great video. >Jason have you tried >the back deck sweep roll yet? >Walter >Impex Assateague I have attempted a couple of times but I haven't been able to do it yet. I just found another source in the Canoeing Handbook (2nd edition) Page 328 has a good ilistration. I think that I will atempt it again after work tomarrow. -Jason
  11. Sent. Please let me know if you don't get my numbers. -Jason
  12. I am afraid that the dates haven't been established yet. As soon as they are established the dates will be posted on the message board and the calendar will be updated. -Jason
  13. After talking with Sean and Paula we have decided that it makes more sense to include the Kayak packing workshop with the Kayak Camping workshop in March. I would like to thank Linda Lacey and Michael Crouse each have volunteered to run the workshop (depending on the date). As long as the date works for them we will have leader for the workshop. -Jason
  14. Brian is currently working on finding a space for the outfitting workshop. The Gear Swap and Packing workshop/demo will use the same space.
  15. Mark, there is a reason that I am looking for someone else to teach kayak packing. This is how I explain why I am still not qualified to pack a kayak for trips: Growing up I used to Canoe camp with my family and we had 3 old town trippers ( http://www.oldtowncanoe.com/canoes_tripper.php ). Each year we would go to the Alagash for two weeks, paddle the lakes and the river. (One year we took 3 weeks and also paddled the lakes back in the reverse direction back to the car, that year we saw 49 moose and 17 dear). Canoe camping you get trained that you should always over pack. A loaded canoe doesn't have the windage issues of an empty one and as it floats the extra weight wasn't an issue. We used to have large cooler full of frozen food (The largest cooler that would fit in the boat). I still think that the chicken cooked over the fire at round pond was the best chicken I have ever had. We would also have large totes for the dry food, stove cooking pots etc. In case you had to stay at a camp site for more than one night (In the past we had large storms with chop too large for a loaded canoe which would extend the trip). We always carried extra food to prevent an extend trip being an issue. Along with the normal spare food you would though spare bags of, potatoes, onions carrots in where there was extra space between the totes. Thus moving from my Old Town tripper that could hold 1,100 LBS to my Nigel Foster Shadow was a culture shock packing for the Knubble Bay Camping trip. Packing for that trip I decided that my backpack was able to hold more than my boat. All that said I am ready for the kayak packing class. -Jason
  16. In February we are organizing a workshop covering: Kayak Repair and Outfitting A Gear Swap and Kayak packing. At this point in time Gerry Smith, Brian Nystrom and Michael Brokenshire have everything covered except for the Kayak Packing Section. I am looking for somone with kayak camping experience to demonstrate how to pack a kayak for a camping trip. If you are willing to volunteer for this, please e-mail me @ jason at kates dot org Thanks -Jason
  17. >As an addendum to my original post, how did you prepare it >for shipping? Just bubble wrap or something else as well? The 1st of my Nigel Foster shadow kayak was shipped via Forward Air and it was wrapped in bubble wrap and cardboard then bagged. Along with a few dozen fragile insured high value etc 1' x 1' bright red stickers on it. Ihe boat was smashed in transit, thus I suggested the other carrier. If you are going to ship the kayak via Forward Air I would suggest having it boxed in a heavy weight box. I figure that they put something heavy on my kayak such as an engine block, so be prepared. -Jason
  18. My boat was shipped from BC CA via Affordable boat carriers and it arrived without issue. (The 1st boat was shipped via air freight thus I wouldn't do that). I don't know what the cost was but you can get a quote from them: http://www.shopperguide.net/advertisers/af...leboatcarriers/ -Jason
  19. Ed just to be clear my trip around the Cape depends on good weather. I would like to meet you for lunch but if the conditions are bad I won't be going. -Jason
  20. I am not sure, it looks like it may take a few more since we don't yet see the paddler. :-)
  21. I think that lunch would be at thatcher around 1:00 PM. -Jason
  22. Mark thanks for the link and the advice regarding the use of hydraulics. I have had to use another machine and the web page looks good. (I wish that it worked with Mozilla or Firefox). Thanks -Jason
  23. My understanding is that it is also be done in a sea kayak. I decided to learn the back deck roll after watching WW videos. In the video they were rolling up faster than I can setup with my normal roll. I am not intrested in keeping my head dry but I am sure some people are. Thanks for the web page, I will test it out in the pool session Sat. Thanks -Jason
  24. Do anybody know of a video that covers the back deck roll? I have the Kent Ford video "The Kayak Roll" that covers the normal roll but not the back deck roll. During last weekends pool session I was able make progress with my offside roll. Hopefully after Saturday's pool session I will need another item to think about instead of my offside. Thus I would like to order a video to get me started. If you don't know of a video but have a web-page or a book would also be very useful. Thanks for the advice -Jason
