  1. The trip has been canceled due to the current weather forcast as it just won't be fun: NW WINDS 20 TO 25 KT WITH GUSTS UP TO 30 KT... BECOMING W 15 TO 20 KT WITH GUSTS UP TO 25 KT EARLY IN THE AFTERNOON...THEN BECOMING SW 10 TO 15 KT IN THE LATE EVENING AND OVERNIGHT. SEAS 5 TO 8 FT...SUBSIDING TO 3 TO 5 FT IN THE LATE EVENING AND OVERNIGHT. I was wondering if anybody is up for a trip around Cape Ann? I was thinking launching at the High school at 10:00 AM. A late lunch at Thacher then back to the cars before dark. This trip is dependent on the weather. Please let me know if you would like to join me. Standard S&G rules apply. -Jason
  2. >>I will volunteer to collect the dues. >>-Jason > >Payment accepted in cash, check, or fluffer-nutter. I have a dozen forms printed out, if you can please bring the form filled out ( http://www.nspn.org/NSPForm0305.pdf ) with a check mande payable to NSPN. While fluffer-nutters are great food sources the bank doesn't yet have a conversion tables for them. Thanks -Jason
  3. If this is not appropriate please let me know I will delete the message. This is the messages that I was e-mailed (edited for Spelling as a few people have pointed out the type-o that was in the e-mail). " Maybe you already knew this, but it shocked me to learn that Gorton's, based as we all know, in a Massachussetts town that derives a significant amount of income from whale-watch tourism, is owned and operated by a Japanese whaling company! Please follow the link below to add your name to a petition asking Groton to put pressure on it's parent company to stop the planned slaughter of 1000 whales in the name of "science," exploiting a legal-loophole in the international ban on whaling. And stop buying any frozen fish sticks from them until they do! I thank you and the whales thank you. http://members.greenpeace.org/action/start.php?action_id=72 " -Jason
  4. >Yes. Next question... > > >Dan >Aquanaut, >Traffic Yellow over white My next question is there a link with more information? Thanks -Jason
  5. I like this winter paddling fad. Empty harbors, almost no stink pots, dry feet and easy parking. There are pluses to paddling in the winter. -Jason
  6. >If anyone has any experience with, or tried to install a >foot-operated bilge pump (See URL: >http://www.seakayakermag.com/2003/03Feb/pump01.htm), I'd >like to hear of your experiences. I searched the forums, but >did not find any references to such an installation. > >thanks - John John, I purchased my Shadow with a guzzler 500 installed. Between the location and not being able to pickup water until it was a 1.5" high it never worked out correctly. I later replaced the foot pump with an electric pump. That was of limited use as it needed .5" of water as the water doesn't collect by my toes. I have to have enough water in my boat to sitting in a couple of inches of water before the pump was of any use. I have since removed the electric pump and have plugged the holes. I now have to cover my temporary repairs with fiberglass and gel coat. In short I would recomend against a foot pump. -Jason
  7. This is the information that Bob gave me: Pine St exit is north of Beverly on 128 before Gloucester. Left at the "T" intersection (Bridge, Bennett, Central) is the way to the police station and the old launch behind (did you ever go there). Right on Harbour St, etc. the launch as as the end of Tucks Point Rd. Yahoo! Maps - Manchester, MA http://maps.yahoo.com/maps_result?name=&ed...t=trav&resize=l
  8. I have posted the pictures that I took at the party. They can be found at http://kates.org/t/D . (About 1/2 are in focus with the correct white balance. I need to spend more time with the new camera). -Jason
  9. >Not everyone has the power to get this boat up to planing >speed. > >http://www.wetasschronicles.com/FlyakSprint01.wmv So how do we go about testing one of these?
  10. Adam (The Monster) is looking for royalty-free aerial photos. I am guessing he needs them for his next article. Google is not royalty-free if you look at the bottom of the maps it is Copy right sign (I don't know how to make one in a web form) 2005 Google .... Mark (The Other Monster) had pointed me to this site for charts before (I would have to lookup the exact link) http://www.mass.gov/mgis/ Adam if they don't have the photos your looking for on the mgis site I would give them a call. -Jason
  11. It seems that nobody was up for Tuesday. I hope that Thursday will work instead. I am looking to do a Night paddle getting to City Point at 5:30 launching by 6:00. Out past Spectacle around Long Island, then back to the south of Thompson and landing back at City Point. High tide is 6:01 PM, thus we should have enough water to get around Thompson. If you would like to join me on the paddle please RSVP as I will not be paddling at night alone. The standard Wet/Dry suit and change of clothes rules apply. Along with the appropriate attire you need a white light. As normal you are responsible for your own safety. -Jason
  12. I would like to RSVP. I am up for the trip in any weather. Thanks -Jason
  13. I have posted the pictures that I took and they can be found at http://kates.org/t/B . I would expect Adam's pictures to be better, many of them were on 35mm film so there will be a delay getting them on-line. It's time to set the record straight. There was no backtracking or jeering when we were on the water together we all paddled the same distance I think that everybody that has paddled with Mark knows that he is the true "Monster". [li] Mark was the first to get to Block Island, dragging fishing gear during the crossing. [li] Mark was also 1st to land during our partial circumnavigation of the Island. [li] He regularly paddles solo or joint trips in the 30 to 60 mile range. [li] Mark is no slacker in terms of speed. [li] Mark also regularly leads show and goes. When I was starting to paddle last year, most of my non CRCK paddling last year was with Mark [li] Mark also seems to be a fishing "Monster". Adam would be another candidate for being the "Monster" [li] Adam has been paddling for 10+ years. [li] He is also no slacker in terms of speed. [li] Rumors is that Adam regularly paddles 50 mile days (not that he will not confirm or deny the rumors). [li] If you pickup a Kayak book there is a good chance that you will find Adam's name in the credits. [li] Adam is a kayak, kayak navigation & kayak fishing instructor. [li] Adam spends more time in his Kayak than many truck drivers spend in there trucks. [li] We all get to read Adam's recent articles in wavelength. [li] Adam cooks a great fish. I don't have enough time in the boat to be a "Monster", at best I could be classified an apprentice "Monster" or "Monster In Training". Jason
  14. I was wondering if anybody knows a local source for Kayak earplugs? I have been able to find them on the web but I have no idea what size the inside of my ear is. Thus I would like to go someplace local and possibly a place that can fit them to me. Walter has a source for them but I rather not drive to NH for a $10 item. This is the place on the web that I found. http://summitkayak.com/store/index.cfm?ite...=1010&do=detail [cente]Thanks -Jason
  15. I just found this post in cpakayaker ( http://www.cpakayaker.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1010 ) That has a link to Free BookletCharts for the Chesapeake Bay http://www.nauticalcharts.gov/bookletcharts/ Once can hope that they will have charts for our area eventually, but for now we can use these when visiting the Chesapeake Bay. -Jason
  16. I must thank Dee for organizing this most excellent trip. The food, group, location and the paddling was great. I didn't take too many pictures, the pictures that I took can be found at http://www.kates.org/t/A -Jason
  17. I would like to be on the list. Thanks -Jason
  18. In this link you will see that the staps are rivited into the helmet. http://www.kates.org/pictures/Jason_and_Gi...gp0203.jpg.html In this picture you will see where the 3 straps hook into a D shaped plastic connector. Under the tape is where the straps where stiched together, I had installed the tape as the ends are sharp. http://www.kates.org/pictures/Jason_and_Gi...gp0204.jpg.html This is the other side. http://www.kates.org/pictures/Jason_and_Gi...gp0205.jpg.html I will bring the helmet with me on the trip this weekend. -Jason
  19. Brian thanks for the help, but I think that you jumped to a conclusion that its user error a little to early. I did read the instructions. By design the only adjustments are fit foam and how tight the strap is. Without removing the stitches and restitching the attachment points there is no moving how the straps connect. Since it wasn't in the manual and no needle/tread were provided I don't think that they envisioned that as part of the normal use. -Jason
  20. I just tried on my Pro Tec helmet tonight (Ace Water Rodeo) and I found that it easly slides back on my head. The chin strap is attached to the helmet in two parts above my ear. It then combines below my ear to a singe strap. Cranking down on the straps pushes the helmet back on my head and hurts my chin. -Jason
  21. Not sure if you thinking of heading back so soon. But I am probably heading to Walden after work to marrow to test dry suit and work on my roll. -Jason
  22. This link lists the water levels and the flow rates along with the predicted future levels. I hope that this is useful for someone else. http://newweb.erh.noaa.gov/ahps2/index.php...iew=1,1,1,1,1,1 -Jason
