  1. Thanks for raising this question. It is reflective of my thoughts as well - not wanting to hold up others while I worked on skill building and not wanting to push the envelop if I did not think there was someone around who would be of help if I got into trouble. (just having someone knowing what I am doing is very supportive!)I have taken several clinics inc rocks and legdes, surf etc BUT it is hard to gain experience on my very nice, but flat, lake.

Kevin's s&g for tomorrow is just what I have in mind..going to a place with the intention of practicing. To this end, I have been planning on posting a s&g with focus on skill building and increasing comfort level in surf off the shore of Cape Cod..Nauset inlet just below Coast Guard beach. My thought is to do this next Sunday as some of us will be there on Saturday for the Monomoy paddle. Tides are very favorable for the to/from paddle across Nauset Marsh. (check "private trips" sunday night)

Perhaps others would also facilitate practice s&g's. I would do others but I do not know the area around Cape Ann at all. I have paddled Nauset.

  3. My paddle float flew out of the boat while being transported this weekend giving me the opportunity to buy a new one. I would like to take advantage of the experience of you all to make my decision as to which to buy. Would you share your opinions as to the pros and cons of your favorite?? (or the one that you wish you had gotten when you saw it being used by a fellow paddler!)

    thanks in advance!

  5. Does anyone have, and would be willing to lend me, Nigel Foster's Vol 5 Forward Paddle? I have Vol 3 directional control and some of Wayne Horodowich's dvds which I would be willing to lend in exchange...ok call it a ransom offer!! LOL

[i have been told that my forward stroke suggests that I first paddled a canoe!!]

    thanks

  6. What an opportunity! I will be on my way to Cape cod for a surf clinic. So I will be in the Boston Area. I can participate!!! I hope that the info as to the put in will be early in the am. I will be following the directions via the deLorne map of MA.

I am going to Alex's during the day in the hopes that she will be there as I work on fixing my skeg cable on my mystic (in case I really mess it up!!)

I plan to leave about 9 am.

    thanks for this opportunity!!!!!!

  9. Gerry,

I have to be in Portsmith on Feb 10 for Disaster training...got room for me thrusday night the 9th and we could talk boats!! Right now I am particulary interested in how you did the cove and bead. I have joined a woodworkers group here and they suggest it is not that hard! Thinking of doing it next winter. And I too am interested in what you are building!!

  10. Thanks for the quick reply Rob. Actually I heard some discussion of the issue one time when I was at Chebacco. It was this thursday that I was planning to come. I will be going to Maine on Friday and thought I would leave a day early and learn something from you all at Chebacco!! Like to plan multiple paddles when I leave home with the rv/boat on top!!!

  11. I note that this was the last week that skill sessions are posted on the calendar. I thought that I heard that, at least thurs sessions at Chebbaco would be held longer into the fall. Yes?? No??

    thanks for the coming info.

  12. Liz is correct when she asks, "Could it be that the Explorer hull only behaves properly when it is heavily weighted, either by the boat itselt being heavy or by being loaded with gear/a heavy paddler?" I understand that there is agreement that the light weight paddler does not weigh enough to get the bow down. that is why it is suggested that the seat be moved forward. I understand that new lvs are not coming with a fixed seat this year. And I was given a new soft seat by the "dealer" so that I could play with the(after I cut out the old seat) and see where the best trim could be achieved. Again, the problem for me with that is that the cockpit is small and if I move the seat forward I would have to be on the combing to make an entry. I would not, I do not think, be able to drop my bum in and then tuck in each leg! I have Lots of room between my feet and the bulkhead (I do not have foot pegs) and could put some weight there. Of course, I could also go on a hot fudge sundae diet :)

    still open to ideas

  13. Hi all,

    I am looking for advice!

I am now trying to correct the design flaw in the LV which is that the bow rides high. The suggested correction is to move the seat forward. I am trying to avoid this as the cockpit is already small and I am not able to bend my knees as I used to years ago. Moving the seat forward would further comprise my ability to quickly enter the cockpit.

So...I am thinking that the correction could be achieved by adding weight to the bow end. I have tried adding about 12 lbs. to the very front of the bow which does does help the trim alot. However, I am thinking that perhaps having that weight in the bow will cause the boat to pivot around that point (which it did in soft wind after I got out).

So the final question is, is it significantly better to add weight to the bulkhead in front of my feet rather that way up in the bow? I prefer the bow as I would have to add significantly less weight there than at the bulkhead.

Any thoughts and suggestions to resolve the issue are greatly appreciated!

    thanks

  14. I am in the process of repairing the leak where the skeg line goes through my bulkhead (in my Mystic). I am thinking that I want to use a silicone caulk but have been cautioned not to because "nothing will stick there again". I am wondering if the reference is to painting the surface (which I will not be doing) or if it means that if a leak develops in the future (or if I am not successful in sealing it this time) I will not be able to use any kind of caulking to further attempt to stop the leak. (hummm, that was a confusing sentence!)

any help on this subject would be appreciated

    thanks in advance
