  1. After reading all the post to Leon's question about the Roll-Aid and comments about paddling alone, I like to make one statement. When people paddle alone, it's a personal choice they make. Most of NSPN'ers and other kayakers understand the inherent risk associated with kayaking. It's really nobody else's business but their's if they choose to paddle alone or with a group. I think it's wrong when people make post that "imply" that those that paddle alone are stupid or something bad is sure to happen. Kayaking is different things to different people. Some have a higher risk tolerance than others. Some do all that is possible to minimize the risk, although they are fully aware it always remains. This is America...people can chose for themselves what is best for them.
  2. Leon: Mine would not easily attach to a paddle as a paddle float for a self rescue that way. It can be attached by wrapping the tether around the paddle several times to keep it attached. I haven't practiced with it trying to use it to climb onto my kayak, but I'm sure it would be of assistance if you were trying to do it. I find it easier to just re-enter and roll back up with it. Once it is deployed, it's is designed to remain inflated and just dragged along side the kayak in case you capsize again...just pull it back next to you and roll up with it again. I think its a great product....but something you don't need if paddling with others and assistance would be available.
  3. Nick: I agree that practicing "live" once is a good idea. I did when I bought mine and let several others burn through a few cartridges. But at $12.50, not something you need to do often. I've had mine 5 years. I just did a "practice" roll with it after it being "armed" for more than 2 years and never used. It worked perfect. The craftmanship is really good in this thing. If you maintain it, it should work when needed. That said, nothing is perfect and I certainly don't use it as my only option...its really a last option. You can buy 68 gram beer keg cartridges, but they use a different size threat, so the Roll-Aid would have to be re-tooled at a machine shop. I've looked into it and they said it can be done.
  4. Yes...I have owned one for years. I now use it when I paddle alone in cold water. It's a great product and easy to use. It deploys in 4 sec. All you have to do is place one hand on top of the inflated bag and pull yourself upright. It cannot be repacked easily on the water.....but has a nice tehter...so if you deploy it...clip in right behind the cockpit and use it again if you capsize a 2nd or thrid time. At a price of over $100 and $12.50 per 68 gram CO2 cartridge, not something you want to practice with often. Once you've done it once....you don't need more practice...its extremely easy to use. I highly recommend it to anyone who paddles alone..whether they can roll or not.
  5. Rob: You can probably launch from Thompson's Point Marina...maybe a small fee to park. You may also be able to park on Town Way Road and lauch there. I haven't been there in years myself but we used to park there to fish. We also used to park at the very end of Thompson Point Road to ice fish...so maybe you can still park there also. The Marina seems to be the best launch though. When are you going? I have to attend a wedding July 12 in Burlington in the evening. Plan to paddle Lake Champlain (some location) both Sat and Sun.
  6. Jason I have a Necky Looksha IV RM (2001 model) with rudder. I live in Exeter, NH. You are welcome to come up and take it out for a spin. E-mail me at cathyfoley@aol.com.....subject line: Necky Looksha
  7. Rick: Under CAM, natural leaders arise. Why sit back and be quiet when you were likely the most qualified paddler there. Leadership doesn't have to be dictatorship. the group can make choices, but the more experienced people should be speaking up and offering suggestions and sharing knowledge.....if the group makes the wrong choice....speak up a bit louder!
  8. Sid: I have ZERO confidence in a Standard Horizon submersible. A few years back, we did a group buy of HX460S. Most of the group had problems within a year. Several had to be replaced more than once under warranty. They may have improved with later versions, but the track record is poor. I've had my ICOM m_88 for 3 years now, submerse it all the time and still works perfect.
  9. I should add we need a minimum of 5 particpants or this will be cancelled.

  12. Congrats.....what were you trolling with for bait?
  13. QUOTE(Kevin B @ Jun 6 2008, 09:30 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>Planning an Isle of Shoals trip in July or August. This is NOT a mothership trip. We'll be paddling out and back. If interested, please post or email:) I'm interested.....early August is best for me as my July is totally booked.
  14. Hi Brian: My schedule has changed and looks like I can help out. Not sure how an REI t-shirt fits over a PFD, but XXL. I don't think anyone else coming from NH, so unlikely I'm car pooling. Where should we meet?
  15. After a close call with a very fast moving motor boat in Gloucester harbor afew years ago, I added the tape Carl recommended......its very bright...can easily be seen half a mile away, and I have had no close calls with boats since adding it.

  18. I have interest, but need to know the date as my schedule only has a few weekends left open
  19. Josh: Post a trip as a show & go....I'm sure you'll have people come. I'm sure there will be many paddling opportunities in the area from others who post also. As Peter B mentioned, there is a Tuesday night skills session in Kingston NH and also a group that meets at Lake Gardner in Amesbury MA on Wednesdays. Seacoastkaykers Group on Yahoo (groups.yahoo.com/gropup/seacoast_kayakers) has group paddles every Wednesday night and alternating Saturdays and Sundays. This is a recreational group that only paddles flat water in the organized group paddle, but they are lots of fun. Several members of that group are NSPN members who do paddle in the ocean, but get together privately. Some of the Wed and Sat/Sun paddles are in Maine. You're most welcome to come and paddle.

  21. There is a really good article in this month's Seakayaker Magazine about a motorboat in Maine hitting a kayaker at night, cutting his kayak in half....bottom line to the article....the State of Maine did virtually nothing to pursue charges against the boater.
  22. Interesting in the statistics provided by Rick from the CG that cold water is not cited as a factor in any of the deaths, yet alcohol is.
  23. Talk to Rick at the Wednesday night skills in Amesbury...he can put you on the right track....or Bill Gwynn or Jed Luby or Suzanne Hutchinson.....any of them could help point in the right direction
  24. Looks like the rain is not going to let up until later tonight
