  1. Time to get back in the boats. Easy surf session/tune-up paddle just to stretch the muscles and get back into more regular paddling. The tides are not favorable but the weather forecast looks nice. There should be some easy surf to play around. If not, we can just paddle down the beach. March 27 Launch: 10:30 a.m. Put-In: Seabrook Harbor Parking lot on Rte 1A High Tide: 6:23 a.m. Low tide: 1:12 p.m. Weather forecast: Sunny with a high of 39 degrees. Wind 8-10mph Drysuit or winter weight wetsuit mandatory.
  2. Joe: I just look at the ocean swell and I'm sea sick. 2 Bonine has worked well for me. I've never got sea sick if I take it BEFORE I paddle. Bonine also doesn't give me the rowsiness that some other products like Dramamine do.
  3. as of now...7 people from Champlain Kayak Club, including 3 from Montreal area...Jacques Coulombe and two friends.
  4. Friday evening, July 30 5:30 p.m. Seabrook Harbor Launch on Rte 1A Several members of the Lake Champlain Kayak Club are coming down to the ocean for the weekend. A few of them are interested in a surfing session at Hampton Beach on Friday evening. All are welcome to join us.
  5. Guys: I'm not going to be able to make it tonight. I damaged my boat (cetus) Wednesday night up in Lake Champlain paddling too close to shore trying to escape the storms. I hit two tree stumps. I can't find a hole, but my boat is taking on water. Have a safe paddle!
  6. I had similar problems a few years back. Turned out to be an ear infection I didn't even know I had. There was no pain associated with it. When I was paddling, I became very dizzy and had problems keeping the horizon steady. Antibiotics cleared up the ear infection but it took me a few months to gain back my confidence. Everytime I paddled for the next two months I had an inner "fear" that I would experience the same illness. It was all in my head of course.
  7. Can we nail down a firm launch time maybe by tomorrow (Wed). I have some work commitments Friday and need to have an idea of when I need to leave NH to make it in time.
  8. Yes...count me in for that Chris!
  9. I'd be interested if its a weekend.
  10. I won't be hosting Great Pond in Kingston, NH on Tuesday's this year as I'm out of town every week Mon-Thurs. I think some others may do some impromptu sessions there or at Pawtuckaway Lake. I may do a few friday night skills at Great Pond if there is any interest.
  11. Three of us (Liz, Chris and I) launched out of Lane's Cove, Sunday evening at 5:00. Conditions were warm, with very flat calm seas. We headed southwest along the coast toward the Annisquam Light, mostly hugging the shore line as Chris weaved in and out of every rock that had water between it. Liz and I took the time to catch up on everything that has been happening to us, as we had not paddled together in a few years. Christopher noted he could not get a word in edgewise, but if you know Chris, he had plenty to say! We followed the river up to the bridge at Goose Cove where the outgoing tide was rushing through the narrows under the bridge. Chris played in the fast moving current, practicing bow rudders and rolls. Liz and I looked on and continued our conversation..LOL. We headed back, taking advantage of the outgoing tide and a bit of a breeze at our back. The return trip was far too fast and we pulled back into Lane's Cove with plenty of sunlight left on the horizon. It was a beautiful evening paddle, nothing eventful but a great chance to reconnect with good friends. Thanks Chris and Liz for posting the invite.
  12. I'm interested....haven't seen you guys in a while.....is this paddle still on?
  13. I took this class last year and then did 4 trips with the NHAMC paddlers. This course is fantastic (Jason was our safety boater for my group....rescued me several times....Thanks ) The course stays on Class II whitewater and while very challenging, is not as dangerous as many people perceive whitewater to be. Safety is #1. the course starts on flat water and progresses slowly over two days into moving water that is Class I and II. The skills you learn in this course will definitely improve your sea kayaking skills. My schedule is unclear at this point, but I plan to volunteer in some capacity for the school, be it shuttling paddlers, or whatever.
  14. I guess I'll be illegal as I only wear a Type V PFD...and I guess my sit-on top kayaks are exempt since they are not enclosed. I wonder how safe I'll be fishing off Monomy Islands with no PFD?.......LOL I think requiring PFD's are great, but they surely didn't consult with experienced kayakers in writing this legislation. Thanks for the heads-up on this Liz
  15. PLB's can't make a call to anyone. It's for that time when you can no longer do for yourself and must summon help in an emergency. If you want to keep family and friends informed...the SPOT is the best option for you. Also, if you activate a PLB and rescuers respond..(which they will after they call your two emergency contacts on file with NOAA) you may be liable for all cost associated with that rescue. Whether or not you are charged is solely up to the rescueing agencies.
  16. Exeter Boat Ramp is approximately 90-100 minutes later than the Dover Pt tide time on a high tide. High tide in Exeter on the 14 of August should be approx 8:23 a.m. and 8:45 p.m. Pretty much 15:30 should be the low water/slack 19:00 there should be lots of water at the ramp
  17. That may be the rule in MA, but in NH on inland waters and where local regs. require it (such as Hampton and Rye), you must have a white light that can be seen 360 degrees.
  18. I see there has been no change in the 5 years since I left Medford....unfortunately, that is the city.
  19. SWEET A.S. Sweet helmets are made in Norway..not cheap...but good quality kayak helmets http://www.sweet.no/snow/#/hardware/helmets_kayak/
  20. Joe and Chris: As Rick S. pointed out, the skill sessions are a great place to learn to roll from peers, but if you are hell bent on paying a professional, there are some highly qualified people in the club that I believe do give private lessons. A few I could recommend would be (not in any particular order): Bill Gwynn Rick Stoehrer Bob Clark Deb Miller Kevin Beckwith I believe they all hold BCU certifcations for coaching at some level. All of these people can be reached on the message board. Just look them up under the members list and send them a private message. If they can't help you, I'm sure they can point you to some other instructor in the area.
  21. Tuesday Nights in NH alternate from Great Pond in Kingston on one week. The following week we will be at Seabrook Harbor for ocean skills and surfing. Tonight, June 2 we are at the ocean in Seabrook. Bill Harter is the lead organizer of the ocean surf sessions.
  22. Tim, On the alternating weeks when we are NOT at Great Pond, we'll be at Seabrook Harbor, NH for an ocean skills session throughout the summer into Sept.
  23. wednesday, may 13 6:00 p.m. til dark This event is sponsored by NE Seacoast Paddlers and open to all types of kayaks as well as canoes. All NSPN members are invited to attend these paddles. They are fun and many NSPN members attend. Great chance to get some paddling on flatwater if you're just a beginner. A nice easy, social paddle for all. Northwood Lake is a long, narrow lake located in southeastern New Hampshire. It lies primarily in the town of Northwood, with lesser portions in Epsom and Deerfield. Northwood Lake has approximately 2 miles of shoreline on Route 4. The meeting place is at the public boat ramp on Lake Shore Drive. This is right off of US Rt 4 in Northwood Directions: * Take NH-125 North toward Kingston/Epping * At the traffic circle, take the 3rd exit onto US-4 drive West Aprox. 14 Miles * Turn left at Lake Shore Drive * Look for Boat Ramp on Left. Click on the Photo above right to view location of Boat Ramp on Lake Shore Dr. Life vests aka PFDs must be worn at all times while paddling with this group. Due to the cold water temps this time of year wetsuits or drysuits are highly recommended
