  1. Great group of paddlers going on this trip--if a couple more want to jump in that would be fine--just post here. It looks like Earl is calming down somewhat for Sunday. I will post no later than 9:00 PM Saturday either way.

Thank you for the maps and the directions.

  2. So it's going to be a gazillion degrees today and everyone on earth will be wanting to get cool. Any thoughts of likelihood of parking being shut down at Walden at 5ish this afternoon because of crowds? I generally go in the morning when it isn't an issue. Would hate to go through hassle of getting boat on car, getting gear etc, driving a half hour and then finding I can't get in!

    Hi Prudence,

I call Walden before I make the effort to see if it is closed and when they will open again. I have had no trouble at 5 even on hot days like today. A word of caution, if they state they are going to open again at a certain time--get there at that time. I understand your reluctance given today's temp.

  3. The tide goddess is with us on Sunday to do a circumnavigation on Cape Ann. The routine is unload at Pavilion Beach in G. Harbor then move car to G High School if you do not want to go through the cut. Or park your car at the high school in the A.M. go through the cut and meet for beach briefing at 10:15 am. Be ready to launch at 10:30 am.

For those who do not want to do the whole trip, you can meet up with us along the way--we will be on channel 72. Another option is to drive tandem to Lanes Cove--leave one car and meet us at the P beach at 10:15 for briefing then leave us when we hit Lanes.

I am hoping for a southerly wind which will make this trip easier.

    The plan:

Paddle to Thatchers--rockplay along the way--stop at Thatchers or Milk to stretch legs--go behind Thatchers for rockplay--then head to Lanes or lighthouse for lunch--then to river to high school take-out.

This trip is a L3+ given the length (20 miles+) and limited to 10 people. Not a racing pace but not a slow pace. If you have not done distance paddling (at least 15+ miles) the whole trip is probably not for you. There is the option of meeting up at different points along the way.

Sunday is a good day for tides and less traffic but will cancel by Saturday evening if conditions are too jumpy. Please post here or send me a message if interested.

I am not a leader, just initiator.

  4. <I might be coming. I just returned from a 'dryland' vacation and I am anxious to go paddling. What time on Saturday and where?>

Rene, welcome back from wherever it is you have been. Go back and re-read my original post and see I wrote 1900-1930 at Lanes Cove. So try to get there seven-ish for a seven-thirty push-off (whatever!) We are nothing if not mellow (seems to be becoming my motto?) Personally, I generally park at the head of the cove, although sometimes I do go to the northeast corner, where the ramp is to be found. It matters not...

Hoping to see you there! (As well as Katherine, Jim, Liz, Deborah, Jeff, Dan and Liane, Barry and June!)

    Count me in--Les

  5. Hi Chris and welcome,

A group of us are meeting Wednesday at Walden Pond. People arrive after 5 p.m. (free after 5) and practice until around 7:15 p.m. We practice rolling, sculling, rescues, and stupid kayak tricks (standing up in your kayak's cockpit or kissing the bow of your boat). It is fun, instructive and you will improve your skills.

So join us if you can. Wednesday works best for most of us who show up.

    The Walden gang,

Peter, Phil, Lorrie, Sid, me (Les) and whoever else shows up.

  7. This Friday--will arrive anytime between 3:30-5:30, depending when pond opens. Have been going at this time for more than 5 times on different days within the last two weeks and had no problem getting in--

Will be at the far end of the Pond practicing--all welcome to join--

  8. Three of us did the race --Leon, Lisa and myself--yesterday along with many others--

A fun race (7 miles, more or less) with lots of bends--never did a river race before--different than ocean racing. Star paddlers Leon and Lisa did a stellar job of leading the pack--and for me, (not training this year), did okay--

Recommend this race to others who want to test river racing--Les

  9. Hi Ern,

Having trouble with my computer--need to attend to this problem--can not make paddle today--sorry for the late notice but I just found out about this problem--Les

I'll revise forecast and make last call in the morning if necessary.

    See ya.

    Ern

Forecast is holding steady at WNW winds 15k, gusts to 20, 2' chop (currently 1.6 sig wave hgt at the buoy, 13-15kn, pretty short 3 sec period).

So this L3++ (old nomenclature, + for wind, + maybe for chop), L4 (CAM method for any criterion)

    is on.

Winds are predicted to be steady but strong, so those with cocky 'yaks PLEASE check skeg function carefully. I trust several of us will bring radios, spare paddles, and those still wanting to rock-play in these gusts bring helmets as getting blown into a hard knock is more likely.

Should be sunny ALL day, so bring lots of drinks.

    Let's have fun!

    Ern

  10. Will be going to Walden to practice rolling tomorrow--Wednesday--afternoon--going sometime between 3:30 -5:30 depending on when I can get in--and will be staying for about two hours--I paddle to the far end of the pond and practice my rolls and sculling--feel free to join me if you would like--

    Les

  11. Would you be willing to go around noon ????

    I'm in that area then

Not sure if Walden is open at that time.

    Deb

Sorry I can't --have a meeting until 2-earliest for me is 3:30--does that work for you--have to call first to make sure they are open for more people--

    Les
