  1. The Ogunquit river runs under the bridge you cross to get to the parking lot. Low tides that weekend are around the time we might typically launch and high tides in the afternoon around a likely takeout. It's possible to launch on the beach and take out on the river or vice versa.
  2. I say we aim for the 19th or 20th and finish planning the weekend before when forecasts become available. Unless conditions are very mild, this will be a level 3 trip with potential for surf and rock play. Water temperature is likely going to be in the low 50s. Depending on group interest, the farthest I can see us going would be Nubble Light, which I believe to be about 5-6 nm each way. Personally, I'm more interested in having fun than covering ground. Lunch in Perkin's Cove is a possibility.

    Ogunquit

While returning from a short trip to Goose Rocks Beach with my wife I stopped to scout off season launch opportunities from Ogunquit Beach. We arrived at HT and parking was plentiful and free. It would have been nearly impossible to launch on the ocean side because of 2-3' waves breaking on. the beach but launching into the river would have been easy. IMG_0791.MOV The coastline from Ogunquit down to Perkin's Cove, about 1 nm is spectacular and can be viewed from the Marginal Way walking trail. Continuing South from Perkin's cove is spectacular as well. I'd like to organize a trip from Ogunquit during October and am seeking interest. Post here if you are interested and we can set up a group message for planning.
  4. This trip will cancel if there are no participants by this evening.
  5. First fall edition of the WLP! We will meet at Odiorne at 10:00am. Generally planning on a coast trip down to Wallis Sands. HT 8:22 am. LT 2:19 pm. Forecast is for high 60s, low 70s, light S winds. Water around 60 with 1.5' swell @ 9s. Possible small surf at Wallis Sands. Let's meet at 10 am sharp, and ready to launch around 10.20 am. Then we'll have a beach briefing, make a plan together based on what people feel like doing, and get on the water, hopefully around 10.30 am. I'm suggesting Wallis Sands but there are several options to paddle from this launch so we will plan as a group based on conditions and skill level. We'll want to avoid Little Harbor at low tide. This trip doesn't have a specific level: we'll determine the route based on who shows up, what people want to do, and what the environment wants to do. All properly equipped members are welcome: please bring rigged boats with deck lines, bulkheads, spray skirts, and dress for immersion. NOTE: The Wednesday Lunch Paddles are cooperative adventures, not guided trips. Each participant is responsible for her/his own safety.Don’t assume the trip initiators are smarter, stronger, better at rough water, more attractive, or more skilled paddlers than you are. For more information, see this description of our trip philosophy from the NSPN web site. A waiver/float plan will be created at the launch, so there's no need to commit in advance. It's always 100% OK to show up, decide you don't like the conditions or the trip, and opt out. If you're interested in coming, it's nice if you let us know by posting on this thread. There is no calendar entry for this particular trip. Other conversation (including stating your interest in going) can also happen on this thread. Looking forward to seeing you there!
  6. I use a similar tracker and find I can get up over 6 mph regularly on a flatwater sprint. If you paddled pretty hard for even a short while down current and or down wind, 7 mph is not unrealistic. That being said I've forgotten to stop the thing only to discover later I covered many miles in excess of 65 mph. Imagine the wake...
  7. I'm a possible for Saturday...
  8. Jeff and I were determined to have a quiet relaxed trip back, avoiding trouble because there were only two of us. Sadly I cut a little too close to what looked like a quiet Halibut Point when two big swells came in and broke over me. I wasn't positioned to try to surf my way out so I braced hard and let them crash over me. No rescue required! My cockpit got a nice freshwater rinse on the terrifying ride home.
  9. Who else thinks you're discriminating against us retired geezers? Lawyer time...
  10. Thanks for the efficient rescue! track-81419-101408am.kml
  11. Nice report, Joe. I have some additional pictures, charts and satellite images here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/1k4dru8kwpw8hsx/AADBiysGJipVeNSV8yYBjLRva?dl=0 The .kml files can be opened in google earth.
  12. Be nice if some of the surfski guys could do a clinic for curious kayak guys...
  13. My foam blocks are custom cut for my rack but even so without the towel they want to rotate off. With the towel, not a problem. There is a moment when you have to let go of the stern and you have to make sure it's passed the balance point and that the bow will land on the front foam. Getting the boat down solo I move it back almost to the balance point then throw a strap over the stern to pull it down.
  14. I have a similar setup on my truck. I tried an arrangement with some casters mounted upside down but this was a failure. The kayak will slide nicely on a towel over a foam block but alone this is tricky due to the height, especially if it's windy. I find I can set the boat across the bed rails then stand in the bed, get it up to shoulder height and rotate it 90 degrees onto the rack. I may have to keep getting lighter boats as I get older!
  15. Can you call or text me at 6037839226so I have your number?
  16. I think parking is available either at the campground or the restaurant.
  17. OK. I would need to be headed home by three. How about meeting at 930? Anyone else want to come?

  19. I did not go today, I was thinking of Monday because I like the conditions better but if I have anyone who wants to go tomorrow I could be convinced.
  20. Am I the only one wondering what happens to the one you don't buy at a "spectacular price"?
  21. I just edited this to change to Saturday. Wind forecasts vary so still tentative based on weather.
  22. I am planning on launching out of Cape Neddick Harbor this Saturday. Launch from the seafood restaurant ($5 fee). Seas should be mild, SE wind 10 - 15 kts predicted. Air temperature mid 70's water mid 60's.Travel south to Cape Neddick Light, North to Ogunquit. If you'd like to join me, post here or contact me directly.
