  1. Even though only the second half is sea kayaking and not much detail is shown, I enjoyed this video and thought I'd share it (love the ending).
  2. This is written by the other person who was in the double kayak with him, Rick Ridgeway, with details that made it both easier and harder for me to understand how it happened: http://www.thecleanestline.com/2015/12/to-those-who-loved-doug.html A tragic loss, very sad.
  3. Interesting discussion. In my opinion, this video, demonstrating the Deep Diggity Dig:also demonstrates the challenges of using a Duffek in a sea kayak. Observe the position suggested to get the sea kayak to spin just like a whitewater kayak. A Duffek functions as a pivot point for the boat to spin around, with the advantage of maximum carve and spin without losing acceleration. Slalom racers combine it with a pivot turn (stern underwater) for maximum benefit. I must admit I have never successfully turned my 17' 8" sea kayak with a Duffek, even in current. Perhaps it is different with a more playful boat design? Many whitewater paddlers just use forward strokes for peel-outs and eddy turns, with a bow draw or a few extra forward strokes on the inside of the turn as needed. Sometimes beginners are taught to use a high brace on the inside of the turns, for stability to encourage edging when hitting the opposing current. Using a low brace here seems like it would be awkward and would not help the progression. Whitewater paddlers use high braces, the emphasis is on staying in your box as the way to prevent shoulder injuries.
  4. Congratulations! Cool that she didn't know she was being assessed.
  5. Would have loved to do this trip but will be in Vermont. Very interested if you end up doing it on another day. Elizabeth
  6. Wonderfully written trip report with amazing photos, thanks so much for posting. For a few moments, I felt like I had left my desk and was right there with you. So wish I had been.
  7. I've had this happen to me also, only while wearing drysuit. Would love some suggestions on how to alleviate or prevent this.
  8. While looking for a new (used) WW kayak on Craig's List in MA and NH, I was surprised to see how many really nice sea kayaks are out there for sale, some look to be in very good shape and reasonably priced, classic fiberglass British designs included occasionally. I paddled an ancient plastic P&H Capella for a long time before I found the boat I have now and it was worth the wait. I appreciate it every time I paddle. Elizabeth
  9. Cool Squam video others might enjoy:
  10. Extraordinary evening, thanks to all of you for your company. Wonderful to see the photos and remember how beautiful the light was...
  11. Yikes is right! Glad to hear you got off the water in time. It would be interesting to better understand what might have influenced the storm cell to change direction.
  12. I am going to put Surge on car and will be at Lane's Cove for 1900. It was a bit thunderstorm-ish here in Andover, but the full moon is beaconing me out and I trust Sir Pintail and knowledgeable others can judge conditions over there tonight.
  13. Is this Moonlight paddle still happening? If so, I would like to join you (Bob is not available tonight, so just me). Please post or message me if cancelled, thanks. Elizabeth
  14. Sounds like a wonderful weekend, so glad you all got to enjoy it. Great photos, the light is beautiful. I would love to see the puffins, very cool. Hope I can join you next time! Elizabeth
  15. Interesting post and responses. Good points about different experiences and approaches, and especially about listening. Recently read this short article, although written for whitewater with first person perspective; outlines basic points and perhaps a few could be relevant: http://www.canoekayak.com/skills/10-tips-for-dealing-with-fear-on-the-river/#KKBXzrwgGRB2mWeB.97 Breathing is most important aspect when coping with fear and anxiety in any situation. When anxious, breathing becomes shallow and rapid, muscles tense and thoughts race. Focusing on the breath and taking slower, deeper breaths relaxes muscles and slows down thinking, allowing the mind to refocus and body to coordinate movements again. Don’t forget that feeling incompetent in front of others can exacerbate the freezing up. Sometimes it is best to help as quietly as possible, then let the individual save face. Better sometimes to be discrete about having to keep a close eye on someone, and ask first if they want some tips before you offer instruction, unless discussed ahead of time.
  16. Bob and I would definitely like to join you. Elizabeth
  17. Thanks for reminding me that working on skills can be fun with good company and guidance, I plan to join you next week (heading off to the Deerfield River this week for some practice in a little boat). Have fun at the lake. Elizabeth
  18. An outstanding Annual Ladies Paddle from my perspective. Collaborative and safety-conscious leadership, wonderful weather and location, skills practice and excellent company all contributed to a day that was both relaxing and productive. Paddling with this group has increased my motivation to improve my skills and conditioning and get out on the water as often as I can. Thank you. Elizabeth
  19. Level 3 skill set: experienced but somewhat out of condition, 1 8 mile Rockport trip so far this season and some pond practice boat: Surge trip preference: North Shore Elizabeth
  20. Looks like an excellent solution, and your cat is really cute.
  21. Thanks for the reminder and helpful information.
  22. We are sorry, but a family situation has come up that we need to attend to tomorrow, so we can no longer do this trip. Hope everyone has a fun and safe day on the water. Elizabeth Williams and Bob Taylor
