  1. QUOTE (Kevin B @ May 12 2010, 03:51 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>Phil and I will be launching from Frisbee's Market in Kittery (43.082422,-70.703137) at 10:30am on Sat. We'll be heading counterclockwise and coming back via the creek. ALL are welcome. If you have questions about whether this trip is for you, then feel free to ask either myself or Phil by PM or by posting here. We expect to be off the water by 2pm. Please note that parking is limited so that we may end up dropping boats and parking at the school down the street. Frisbee's address: 88 Pepperrell Road Pepperrell Cove Kittery Point, ME (take a right after it and follow the road down to the water.) Kevin, I've been interested in seeing this area, so will try to make it tomorrow. Bob
  2. Katherine, As a participant in the conversation, I can only explain my posting. In fact, I see now that I may have unintentionally mis-interpreted Lorrie's posting in mine. I have no problem with L1 and L2 trips. There are many very interesting areas along the coast that qualify as L1/L2 trips - areas that I'm excited to explore this summer. My statement had to do with leading new paddlers. My own paddling and emergency handling skills are still at a level such that I would not like to lead a group of new paddlers without other experienced paddlers around. Given the high skill levels at NSPN (due in part to the lake and pool practice sessions), this would probably occur naturally anyway. I hope that clarifies my posting. Welcome to NSPN, and look forward to paddling with you this summer! Bob
  3. Sure. I also would not be comfortable leading a group of new paddlers without some other L3 types around. Bob
  4. We could easily fit L1/2 ocean trips in and around the Forest River/Willows practice sessions on Friday. I think that has been done before, but perhaps not advertised as trips. Bob
  5. Ross, Saw this at the paddle-fest in Cambridge with Blaine and Sunny last winter: http://www.necessaryjourneys.ca/findingfarley/index.html Note the toddler, and the dog! The movie was excellent and made me want to read Farley's books. Actually for me it wasn't the water that gave pause, but the biting bugs they encountered. Bob
  6. Suz, I see your point. The CG should be the absolutely last resort, such as if there is an immediate emergency. I was thinking of that lone paddler heading off to England in the fog. However, it is not a likely scenario if the group acts together to determine the course. Bob
  7. That was an interesting discussion yesterday concerning the possibility of a wayward, but determined, single paddler. I was wondering if calling in the cavalry (in the form of the Coast Guard), or perhaps at least threatening to do so, would be warranted at some point.
  8. I would like to thank the organizers of yesterday's workshop. It was both fun and very educational. I'm really looking forward to the on-the-water sessions! In one of the sessions yesterday we were tasked to consider various trip scenarios under the CAM model. It was felt that these scenarios should be shared with the larger NSPN community. Our group got 'Late Arrivals': So you are the trip initiator or participant at the beach, the boats have been unloaded, beach briefing completed, and people are beginning to launch. Worse, what if everyone has launched; and you glance back to see someone frantically driving up. What to do? Option 1: Everyone waits. The individual is given quick beach briefing, with the briefer possibly returning to the beach to help unload and re-brief. Option 2: A few people go back, including the beach briefer. The rest of the group proceeds (slowly?) to the destination with the idea that the people left behind will catch up. Option 3: The late arrival is left on the beach to catch up with the group, perhaps after radio contact is made in which the destination is relayed (since that could have been changed at the beach briefing). When the late arrival joins the group, he/she is briefed on the plans for the day. Option 4: "Just say no". The group may have a tight schedule (perhaps due to tides) or people are getting cold waiting around on the beach. The launch may have been a little tricky, so people do not want to go back, nor be "complicit" with a plan involving a lone paddler in questionable conditions. Obviously, there is no single answer that works under all conditions. Much depends on the particulars such as conditions, the experience level of the group, the experience level of the late arrival, and etc. Our group did conclude, however, that arriving late is very bad form for an NSPN trip, CAM or otherwise. At the very least it is inconveniencing your fellow paddlers, and at the worst perhaps causing a schedule to slip dangerously. Bob
  9. Peter, I plan on attending. Thanks. Bob
  10. I'm in. Will check in am for changes. Bob
  11. QUOTE (Kevin B @ Apr 14 2010, 08:21 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>Might be a little bump on an otherwise dreary day this Sat. Anyone interested in playing in the surf? Decide location closer to the weekend. Hi Kevin, Weather not great, but I'm interested either Sat or Sun. Devereaux? Singing? Bob
  12. Yes. The cover to the cylindrical compartment seen in pic #14 was marked 'Battery'. It did not appear disturbed, so may still be inside.
  13. Thanks for the pictures Doug. Sorry to hear about the camera. I had read about the buoy in the paper. Must have been quite a sight seeing that come ashore in the storm. Overall great trip. I had never been down Fox creek before. The ocean conditions were manageable with 1-2 foot chop, which was lucky since we had the wind to contend with. Great workout! Rene, Yes! new boat that I bought this winter from JonD. Impex Assateague. I'm still adjusting things such as foaming out the bulkhead but it is working out very well. Keeping the Seaward Aurora for a while for guests and if I ever manage a camping trip. By the way, great pictures on your posting. I like the B&W effect. Bob
  14. Doug, I plan on attending tomorrow. Thanks. Bob
  15. Ed I went out on the Marblehead Deveroux trip yesterday with eight other NSPNers. Light bumpy conditions, sunny weather, and an overall exhilarating trip, as per usual. I wore the Kokatat supernova semi-dry (which, by the way, Gail had mentioned was for sale at an outlet store in Concord last summer). Underneath I had long sleeve polyester shirt and long-johns. Had gloves, caps, and extra dry clothes in dry bag, but did not need them. I had on water shoes over the booties with regular socks underneath (I'm just not comfortable with boots, no matter how large). The air temps off Marblehead were cooler, probably down to the 60s, and there was some wind. I was comfortable the entire day, starting out at 8:30am and returning to Forest River at about 4:00. Was determined to stay out of the water, however, since just wading in and the usual launch/bump splashing was enough of that cold water experience for me. I felt a slight chill at lunch on Browns Island, but not enough to dig out my dry clothes. I'll try a wet exit and practice roll at Forest River just to see how things work out - but will wait for those storm drain effects to diminish! Bob
  16. Gillian, Looking good for me on Sat. I guess little better than last week's 20 degrees! Thanks. Bob
  17. QUOTE (Kevin B @ Mar 24 2010, 11:36 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>Our dog walkers are not available, so we'll be paddling locally. BIB time of 9am at Deveraux in Marblehead. Plan on paddling out to Tinkers, etc. depending on the group preferences. Return to Dev. around 1:00pm. Bring a helmet if you are planning to go near the rocks. Kevin, I'm up for it. Looks like conditions ease up as the day progresses. Could leave out of harbor side if Deveraux is dumping, or too gusty, or too cold. Will check later or early am for cancellation. http://www.weather.gov/forecasts/wfo/secto...ineDay.php#tabs Bob

  19. Hi Gene, If I recall correctly, Ross and Dave went all the way into the beach. Everyone but me went through the pinched (low tide) entrance from the north, which had a lot of irregular surf in it. I figured it was just a little beyond my skill level, at least for cold water, and went around the rock formation and back to the beach. Actually, there were some large breaking swells on that route as well. Another excellent adventure off Manchester.... Bob
  20. Perfect weather: sunny 50s with about 4ft waves. Participants were Dave C, Chris, Sean, Ross, and myself. Left at 10:00 from Ocean St in Manchester. Beach looked a little rough but launch OK - mine was perfectly mis-timed so got an early soaking. Headed south towards Singing Beach, which was dumping. So much so that at one time Ross swam out the kayak with a tow from Dave and Sean - as well as an assist from Chris. Headed a little further south and then about .5 mile off-shore to a ledge with beautiful 6 foot breakers. Attempted some rides, but I found the big waves too fast to catch, so mostly just enjoyed the bump before paddling south towards Tucks. Put-in for lunch just north of Tucks in small rocky cove that looked forbidding, but it turned out that much of the energy was broken by some rock formations so there was a path in. After lunch we headed to Tuck's point rock formations, and further for a break at Misery Island. For a brief period we shared the ocean with the coal ship heading to Salem. In the return from Misery to Ocean St kept mostly to a straight line, with some people detouring back to Singing Beach and the coast. Return at 4:00 - an exhilarating trip for the start of spring paddling! Thanks to Ross for calling it.
  21. Hi Ross, I'm in. See you tomorrow morning. Bob
  22. Hi Ross, I'm going to try to make it tomorrow morning. How long are you going out for? I've never put-in at Ocean Street. Is the parking along the street? Will confirm with later post. Thanks. Bob
