  3. It's the same idea as the original plan. Meet at Riverhead for launch, go explore or play. Standard Show and go apply. Sounds like at least 7 of us: me, Lorrie, Judy, Mary, Barry, Gene and Dave. There was some discussion at Good Harbor that butt in boats was 10:30, so why dont we make that the launch time. Forcast winds are 10-15 from the S with higher gusts, but falling during the afternoon (as of 9pm Sat.). Now if I can just find the launch in time ;-) Phil
  4. Several of us that were playing at Good harbor beach agreed to meet for tomorrow's trip. Lorrie and I, as well as Judy (? explorer) and Mary (? force 3). If conditions hold as forcast, I think we'll have a nice trip if others want to join. Phil

  8. Lorrie and I are planning on camping down at Horseneck beach this weekend. Anybody wanna make suggestions for places to paddle? Obviously, there's plenty of level 2 stuff in the branches of the Westport river, and surfing along the beach. How about rocks, pretty stuff to view and other fun things? With the water being 10 degrees warmer than Cape Ann, I'm willing to get wet. Thanks. Phil

  10. Ed- Not a slave to the forcast. Just decided to paddle somewhere else where there's amusement to be had within a few hundred feet of shore with the wind pushing one into land in case of problems. And I would say that todays forcast held up pretty well. 12-15 consistent with higher gusts. Phil

  14. Ok, need some generalizations. I'm considering a drysuit purchase, and I can't try on all the various makes/models. Looking at the sizing charts, I fall in between most medium/large designations. Height is usually a medium, inseam a small and chest, waist and weight are on the lowest range of large. So the question is, which manufacturers run large, true or small to size compared to the specs? Thanks. Phil
  15. Suz- Glad to here you like the Glo-tube, as it was a product that had caught my eye. If any one is looking to get one, make sure you've got the correct color and model.   17. Thanks for the suggestions. I like the "lick them clean" method, as that seems doable without taking the retaining strap off even in lumpy conditions. Followed up by fresh water rinse when do-able Phil
  18. I popped in to the magazine beach parking lot last night to scope out a possible moonlight paddle on a hot evening. No parking after dark signs up and 3 hour parking max was posted. I dont know what the enforcement is though. Phil

  20. Anybody have any recommendations on how best to treat one's eyeglasses so that on a windy wet day they dont accumulate large amounts of salt? We were out last saturday with 20+ winds and after an uphill slog I could barely see through the salt. I'm wondering if something like rain-X would work for sea water the way catcrap works for fog on ski gogles? Thanks. Phil ps, I cant see much past a few boatlengths without them, hence the question
  21. If you look at some of Sea Kayaker Magazine's boat reviews, they give you the righting moments of the boat with different weight paddlers +/- 100 lbs of gear. Consistantly, the ability of the boat to return to upright is higher with the extra gear (ballast in the previous discussions) within some limits. Interestingly, adding the 100 lbs of gear gives very little change in waterline or wetted surface/submerged area (10-20 percent change) to account for the nearly 2 fold increase in righting moment. I suspect the effect is due to the change in center of mass. As the boat ways 30-60 lbs, and the paddler weighs 100-300lbs, the center of mass for an empty boat and paddler is probably near the paddlers chest. I suspect that the cargo/ballast adds mass closer to the waterline and lowers the effective center of mass towards the water surface. This would lead to increased stability due to a reduction in the torque generated by the mass of paddler, gear and boat. Now to stop being a pointy head, its hard to directly translate the physics into our feelings about the stability of a boat. Extra mass will help to a point, but good luck if it starts moving around in the boat while you paddle. Phil ps: wrote this and then noticed PeterB beat me to it

  23. Lorrie and I were planning on going to the party and paddling before hand, but the teenager has come down with a nasty cold so our plans are a little up in the air. I would like to get down to enjoy the day and support Carl. If someone organizes a paddle, please let me know. Phil
  24. Dont have a name for your stretch David, but the stretchs the IT band (illiotibial band), which runs from the hips down to the outside of the knee. Over tight IT bands can lead to poor tracking of the knee which can lead to osteoarthritis in the joint. The Anderson stretching book describes stretch for that region but there all based on lying down (not a bad thing). As for your stretch (which I also do), its good to have a wall or door in the diretion your leaning in case you loose your balance. Phil
