Hi Jason,
Thanks for doing all the work and follow up. One thing, and it may be me, but is the calendar currently missing? I can't seem to find it.
I have updated the menu bar to make the calendar more visible.

Jason,
Noticed the following message on in the "Upcoming Events" section on the home page.
Software error:
404 Not Found at nspn-cal.pl line 23.
For help, please send mail to the webmaster (webmaster@nspn.org), giving this error message and the time and date of the error.
Thanks, I will take a look at fixing the rss feed to make that work again.

The upgrade has just finished.
it took just over 7 hours from start to finish. Across all off the forums we have close to 70K posts.
If you noticed anything that's not working please report it to this thread or e-mail webmaster@nspn.org.
Thanks -Jason

Splitting the group on a winter paddle is something that I would work hard to avoid.
It's much better to put someone on tow and keep the group together than to read about the results of not doing that in the paper the next day.

We have been testing a new version of the message board and are getting ready to roll it out.
One of the change will be that we will no longer have a separate username and display name. We are planning on consolidating to just use the loginname. If you want your loginname changed please drop me a PM and we can do that.
The current plan is to roll out the new version Tuesday night (Jan 12 2016), please expect downtime during the upgrade.
I will update this thread when the upgrade is done and issues can be reported to this thread or if you have issues posting to the thread after the upgrade you can e-mail webmaster@nspn.org.
Thanks -Jason

As Ed already pointed out Meetup does provide the functionality for online discussion. Most of the Meetup groups that I'm familiar with do not exercise that function much. However if NSPN went to their own Meetup, I think the membership uniquely would take advantage of the discussion function. If this were the case then the current NSPN site would only need to be preserved for the historical archives, perhaps read only. Meetup does seem to be inherently more friendly, perhaps the medium truly is the message?
As things sit today, the content from the current forum can not be imported into Meetup.
I don't know how it's envisioned.
My guess is one of ~3 options.
Using Meetup for trips and using the current site for the forum (Fracturing things).
Moving everything to meetup and dropping the old forum/content. (Could be done but loses the history)
Moving everything new to meetup and attempting to keep the history on the old forum. (Who would stick around to apply security updates / patches and work on the old site? Would the BOD pay for hosting and software support while also paying the meetup fees?).
If the forum does move to meetup I don't see anything unique with NSPN, it will be another cookie cutter group that will have history going back to it's meetup establishment in 2016....

Hello Gentlemen & Ladies that may be lurking,
The reasons for considering a switch are many and include the ease of trip posting, organizing... An additional consideration is the amount of time a few volunteers spend upgrading and maintaining the current website, it can be cumbersome and burdensome.
One of the options we are considering is using the Meet Up only for trips and maintaining the NSPN site.
I urge you all to complete the survey, if you hasn't done so already.
If you have ~ thank you!
How would moving trips to meetup help with the current website? It would see that if you want to split it up meetup and the website would have to be maintained. If your talking about dropping the forum and the history, that would drop the web site maintenance, but it would get rid of the forum history.

Yes, boat ramp is locked.
Thanks, I can now move the thread.

Are the weekly Walden sessions done for the year?

Hi Dan,
We want feedback from all and please use the comments boxes.
Thank you,
It would seem productive to encourage a dialogue on the site before making a major switch.
I think that Dan needs some feedback before he can reply to the survey.

Great luck! You might talk with Suz about the updated Idol.

Thanks for the heads-up as to Todd being on TV. I found it and plan on watching it: http://abcnews.go.com/US/woman-accused-death-fianc-york-kayak-murder-case/story?id=34976440
Carl was on another segment of the video. I left it running, not paying much attention then I heard Carl's voice and I had to rewind it.

Thanks, Jason. Did you apply the Bodyguard tape wet or dry? Are you using it in the area I intend to use it in?
Andy
I think that I used the windex trick to put it on. I know that I used the windex trick when I put the clear protector on my truck under where the roof racks attach to the truck.
I have paddle britches in the front: http://northwater.com/collections/paddle-leashes/products/paddlebritchesand then the bodyguard is under the paddle blade.

Great job!

I haven't had much luck with gel coat under 50F. Under 50F, it becomes an inside project. I have basement space and will help, if you are up for a trip north.

I have had this on my boat since 2009: http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00029XD7G It stays on really well, I can't say if it's something that removes when you want it to.

If you have a Kokatat one you can send it back to them and they will test and fix it. If it's not you can get some goretext tape to fix it.

Proud to let everyone know that Robert (aka the bearded recluse who won't stop talking) has passed his BCU 4 star assessment.
Many of you probably also know Matt Kane from NY - he also passed this weekend.
Congratulations to both!
That's great news, not an easy test! Congratulations!!

It sounds like you had a great trip! I need to get back!

More pictures of Rick's dress. It's on display at Cape Ann Museum through Thursday evening. Searts.org for details
That's one work of art! I wouldn't want to guess as to how many hours it took to make!

Well, I ended up having an exciting day involving water today, but not in Muscongus Bay, and not even while kayaking. As I sat in my home office, all of a sudden I heard the distinctive sound of water running through the pipes in the house. My home office was converted from the former laundry room, and the old washer hookup was never disconnected from the house piping. For absolutely no reason, the old shutoff let go and water started spraying onto my file cabinets! I was able to run to the basement and shut off the main before it got too bad, and thankfully the cleanup only needed a couple of towels on the floor and whipping off the outside of the cabinets. Although no serious damage done, Cathy was out shopping, and if I had been in Maine, it would have run for a couple of hours! As it was, I was able to cap off the old lines, and all is well again. I am no longer so disappointed about not being able to kayak and camp this weekend. Let's hope the clouds hold off long enough to see the eclipse tonight. Happy viewing!
Wow that's not good! I am glad you were around and were able to take care of the issue before it was much worse!
When heading out I have it setup to turn off the power to the well pump. I am also looking to add a shutoff as my current setup still leaves a lot of water in the pressure tank that can still make a mess.

I have had great luck with the Snap Dragon ones. http://www.outdoorplay.com/Snap-Dragon-Hot-Hands-Kayaking-Pogie
I find that I have to push them to the center of the paddle for times to let my hands cool down or just use one alternating what had has the pogie.
As for the winter camping it seems like an interesting idea.
Forum Upgrade
in General Message Board
Posted
Doug,
The upgrade was only the message board. The people that wrote the message board software have been pushing everybody running the 3.x version to upgrade for ~24 months. We waited a fairly long time for the upgrade. The 4.x version is the version that they are providing security and functionality updates as 3.x has been deprecated.
With the new version it was a complete re-write and with that it has some real pluses and minuses. One of the thinks that I think that you will like is how easy it is now to upload and attach pictures.
When we setup the dev version of the site back in July it was pointed out that one can edit post in work and easily cut and paste it into the forum without the formatting issues that we had with the 3.x version.
We are hitting a number of bumps with the upgrade. Some of them were know before the upgrade such as that the skins wouldn't transfer over, in time I expect that the BOD will bring the person in that built the 3.x version. Others such as the RSS for the calendar changing urls and formats was not expected.
It wasn't the cleanest or easiest upgrade. Rob's been doing a great job helping with it and hopefully we will get it to where people are happy with it and hopefully we are another 5-7 years away from a version upgrade that's this disruptive.
