  1. Now if we could only get the bunch of you to collaborate on fixing the economy? Or climate change, or health care. I'm convinced now more than ever that science more than any other subject or endevour trains the mind how to think! Thanks for all the fun and fireworks guys and gal.
  2. Some of the more charming options includes a circumnavigation of Gerrish/Cutts island and a circumnavigation of NewCastle. Odiorne into Little Harbor out to the Rye rocks and landing at Wallis Sands is another favorite.
  3. I live near Pepperral cove in Kittery Point and am also very close to Odiorne Point, Rye ,NH. Both venues offer protected waters, options for some exciting rock play, beach landings and medium distances. 7-8 miles. I am open for paddles in these areas almost any day of the week or weekend. For reasons of personal pique, lazyness or just lower energy I'm no longer up for considerable travel to a put-in or distance and fast pace once I get there. If this works for anyone else please contact me. cosloy@comcast.net Once we have a few who are interested I will plan a trip and post it on this site.
  4. The Ranger's are not there collecting fees on Misery during the week, only the weekend. Also if you land on Little Misery they seldom come across even on the weekend.
  5. I'd love to post a batch of photos documenting a wonderful day but since we were all hard core paddlers concentrating on rescues, rolls and tows off the rocks we had no time for sentiment. Ok, I'm lying but it was a glorious day and we did spend some time among the rocks of Children's Island. Ten signed on for L2+ and but two joined us who were up for L2. Honestly, I couldn't and didn't notice the difference. Thanks to Peter and Blaine for organizing this. The day began omniously enough overcast and threatening but soon brightened with blue skies and sunlight. The on shore breeze kept it comfortable yet the water off Children's was warm enough for swimming.
  6. Employing an oxymoron, I'm a definite maybe for L2+.
  7. I was able to add photos to my posts on the old browser. Now I don't know how! Help please.
  8. The dark blue and teal are complements and don't really clash. I'd like the banner color to be a dark to medium green. Ah, green water!
  9. David-I was so looking forward to this trip but I may have a conflict. My daughter wants to celebrate Father's Day with me. I guess Hallmark trumps NSPN.
  10. The joke about tandems is they are marriage killers. What does that portend for the folks in a 100 seat kayak? Murder on the high seas?
  11. I hesitate to say so but this group seems to have a better sense of humor than another group I'm familiar with but whose name shall remain nameless. (OK- its like Wild Turkeys are like Italy and the NSPN is like Switzerland.)
  12. I'm a strong maybe at this point.
  13. Excellent work at a very reasonable price. Thanks for the tip Scott. Would have liked to see video of you on the rocks that did this damage though.
  14. Shakespeare as far as I know never joined the union (guild). Shakespeare didn't coin the term 'gild the lily', but he came as close to doing so in King John, 1595: SALISBURY: Therefore, to be possess'd with double pomp, To guard a title that was rich before, To gild refined gold, to paint the lily, To throw a perfume on the violet, To smooth the ice, or add another hue Unto the rainbow, or with taper-light To seek the beauteous eye of heaven to garnish, Is wasteful and ridiculous excess.
  15. If you have any concern about bacteria count and its always going to be higher right after a good rain, protect your self with nose clips, ear plugs and swimming goggles. I once took a 2 hour rolling lesson years ago at Walden and forgot my nose clips. Result: sinus infection lasting 6 weeks. Then again you may have a first class immune system; I think I got mine on Craig's List.
  16. Since moving to Kittery Point I may have done this trip at least a half dozen times or more with companions and solo. The very first time you wonder why anyone would want to do it more than once. Well each and every time is different. Today was no exception. Leon, Lisa, Sid and myself left the Kittery Wharf in Pepperrell Cove into a pea soup fog. We paddled east into a moderate ESE wind and rounding Fort Foster headed NE to Brave Boat Harbor. We were about 2 hours before high tide and the flood current coming in combined with many shoals and off shore rocks along the trip presented us with many breakers of not inconsiderable height. As we paddled more and more out to sea to avoid the breakers landmarks were now totally shrouded by fog and I was concerned we would have trouble finding Brave Boat. Fortunately Sid's chart showed all the shallows and shoals and we used the breakers as our landmarks. Its both peaceful and scary at the same time to be on a rough open sea in the fog when you can't see land. After stopping inside the harbor for lunch we headed back still in fog through the switchback marsh and into Chauncey Creek when the fog suddenly lifted, the sun came out and the sky turned blue. Off in the distance we could see New Castle still obscured by fog. What a beautiful varied and challenging trip with wonderful friends.
  17. Traip Academy Kittery put-in in the back channel. $5. launch fee plenty of parking in the school lot.
  18. Great day on the water. Doug-you need to get a GoPro Hero camera and mount it on your bow so we can study your graceful surf technique.
  19. Tom, You raise some good points. However, the NSPN membership is not all in lockstep with skill building, training and the benefits of professional coaching. Many of us,I think the majority, do take the activity more casually. Its really only the same usual suspects that hold forth on some of these technically exasperating posts. (Bless them!) I will add however that when the subject of safe paddling practice comes up, many of the exhaustive posts on the subject are worth reading and are a tribute to the socially responsible nature of those posting. Happy paddling!
  20. This paddle is tomorrow May 19th. Plan to meet at 10:30AM
  21. A few of us are meeting 10:30 at Odiorne on the south side of the bridge HT BinB and launch at 11:OO. Paddle South play on Rye rocks and stop at Wallis Sands for lunch. Moderate pace and miles. L2 but rocks and some surf at Wallis make it L3. Wear helmet and wet suit or dry suit.
  22. I agree with most of the above except I usually put my dry-suit in the washing machine set to delicate add a tincture of Woolite and cold water wash. Hang up inside out to dry. Then I take a well deserved hot shower for myself.
  23. Just finished reading most of "The Lobster Gangs of Maine." Have to say, after reading this the next time a Lobsterman behaves in a hostile manner toward us kayakers I'll know why and not be surprised. Rather an interesting anthropological study of a secretive, ornery, suspicious of outsiders, subgroup of men living and working on the fringes of civil society. Primitive and not at all a role model of the independent man. (This opinion was gleaned from my reading-not a prejudice I personally held.) The lobstering part was interesting and certainly informative-the social part was more awesome and surprising if not jaw dropping.
