  1. I see 10 kayaks on the North cove of the Island and a single one up on the grass. Is this you or am I looking at the wrong Island?
  2. Peter, Unload boats and gear near the put-in on Harris Is. Rd. Then park along 103. there is a restricted area for permits but plenty of room behind that area. Its a short walk. On Sunday the parking by the harbormaster shack should be taken up quickly. If there is a spot make sure it faces the harbor not the other side. Finally there is free diagonal parking up Harris Is. Rd. near the marina, but that is a little bit of a trek.
  3. Five of us, Shari, Leon, Bob, Jeff and I left York Harbor close to high tide and paddled directly, I rekoned, to Cape Neddick where the famous Nubble Light house stands majestically on its own rocky prominence separate from the mainland. There is a gap between the two and any other time I've witnessed, its too rough to venture within. Friday was a wonderful exception, avoiding a few rolling breakers and ledges we entered the gap in calm. It was somewhat disconcerting to see all the tourists standing on the edge of the rocks at Sohier Park. Were they watching us and thinking "They're crazy!" or were they regretting they couldn't join us. After enjoying the magnificent views of Nubble we rounded Sohier and headed for Short Sands in York for some lunch and rest. The lifeguard on duty promptly confronted us but relented once Leon played the broken leg card. On the return trip Bob wanted badly to circumnavigate the Nubble island and so we did before returning to York harbor. The harbor was close to ebb and we enjoyed some of the rips and standing waves that resulted. A hair over 12 miles with wonderful company and calm seas. A day of beauty and magic.
  4. Trip is a go! Wind 6-7 from East gusts 8-9 It should be cool on the water. Bring paddle jacket. Sunny, no rain and 1 footers off Long Sands. Meet at 11:30-launch at noon. Biff you may call my cell 207 651 2779.
  5. Ok great! I'll check the forecast on Thursday eve and put out a go or no go soon afterwards.
  6. The put-in address is Harris Island Road, York, ME. This is the link to the put-in: http://www.gmap-pedo....com/?r=5555046 Biff, You know where I live-I'm a quarter of an hour south of the put-in. Alternative: Stop by the house at 11:00 and you can follow me.
  7. Done this before and its delightful. I'm in.
  8. Looks like the consensus is for Friday 7/20 HT is 12:30PM and LT is 6:30PM not the most favorable for getting out and back via the harbor. I suggest launching at noon when the flood will be minimal and getting back by 5PM where paddling against the ebb won't be too bad. We can stop for rest and snacks at Short Sands. Currently NOAA indicates good weather for Friday but its early and that could change.
  9. Hoping to do this sometime this coming week. Post here and let us know what days are OK for you. I'm good every day save Tuesday. The goal would be to circumnavigate Nubble Light, although the CG may have other ideas. As we leave York Harbor there are plenty of rocks and Long Sands is popular as a surfing beach. Straight ahead paddling gives a round trip of about 10 miles.

  11. I'm sorry to be out-have a good time!
  12. I am interested, but have a left oblique pull. If its better in the morning I'm in. (If not I could always arm paddle-ha!)
  13. Four of us, Shari, Jeff, Bob and moi left York harbor in intense heat and were greated by an on-shore breeze that made it seem 15 degrees cooler. We paddled into a southern wind and landed at Brave Boat where a half hour before dead low tide we found a channel that opened onto a rocky beach facing the ocean swells. Private Property, No Trespassing signs were strategically placed and being somewhat sympathetic to Michael Bakunin's dictum that "Property is theft." ignored them. Of course, no good anarchist deed goes unpunished and the enterprising green heads attacked with little mercy. Aside from Godfrey Cove there is precious few landing spots along the shore. York Harbor along Harris Island Road now has new signs announcing Harbor sticker parking only. We unloaded and loaded near the beach put-in and did park legally closer to the marina. Good that we did-I noticed one soul who ignored the signs was slapped with a $50. ticket. I can't think of something else so aesthetically pleasing and environmentally friendly being assulted with more restrictions on what should be our free access to the nations waterways. Several practiced their rolls in the harbor and we left with a desire to do the northern route soon: York harbor to Nubble light, Cape Neddick.
  14. Sure, I can do Friday. Ok same itinerary but Friday! Low Tide is 1:30PM Here is the proposed route: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=5555798
  15. Best of Luck to you Biff and the same goes for Lisa.
  16. Meet at Harris Island Road at 11AM Launch at 11:30AM Leave harbor on the ebb tide. LT is 2:30PM and head south exploring the Maine Coast. Check out Godfrey Cove. Pull in to Brave Boat in Kittery to rest and snack. Return via same route. Off the water by 4PM. Bring Helmets if you intend to rock play. Moderate pace, under 10 miles. RSVP here. Put-in: http://www.gmap-pedo....com/?r=5555046
  17. Rene-Read the "Lobster Gangs of Maine" and understand that their subculture is similar to that of a criminal organization. They have no legal right to the exclusive use of the areas they control for their traps. Neither Federal, nor State, nor local laws apply. Hence these areas are controlled through force and intimidation. (Or euphemistically by tradition!) Based upon this enthusiastic acceptance of renegade status it is no surprise that many will be hostile to kayaks considered to be within their domain. We tend to celebrate their putative spirit of independence but overlook the essential hostility directed towards outsiders. Many are bullies and followers pure and simple. Of course my eating Lobster can be interpreted as either hypocrisy or self-hatred! Mea culpa!
  18. It does seem logical however that edging away from the paddle side would be more efficient. Water tends to slip under the hull easier than against the chine and hull. On the other hand if you're in rough water-say breaking swells and you need to draw toward the swells you might feel more secure edging on that side. The quickest way to prevent a capsize during a hanging draw edging on the other side is probably the high brace and that has its own set of problems. This is just my own personal experience and some speculation. I'm always willing to let it "hang" out there and perhaps "draw" some critique.
  19. Congratulations to Sid Cohen who recently passed the Maine Guide certification. Way to go Sidster!
  20. Current NOAA Graphical forecast for the coast is excellent: Wind from NW under 10, low seas, and sun. Last call for this magical tour. Creek, marsh, ocean, Piscataqua harbor, this trip has at all. Rock hounds bring helmets.
  21. NOAA Graphical forecast looks good; this could change however. Thursday July 5th. 8mi Circumnavigation of Gerrish /Cutts Island. Launch from Kittery (Frisbee) Wharf 12:00Noon (Meet at 11:30AM) HT is 1PM Paddle clockwise through Chauncey Creek and the Rachel Carson marsh with a rest stop just inside Brave Boat Harbor. Return on the ocean side where rocks, ledges and shoals can create swells and breaking waves. We will travel a heading that most will be comfortable with. Because of the ocean exposure this is an L3 trip. N winds under 10. RSVP here if interested! Put-in: http://www.gmap-pedo....com/?r=5540608
  22. I'm going to move this to a new topic as a Trip.
