  1. A wise paddler once told me that you could land anywhere if "navigating", which often involved partaking in herbal remedies. I've never been a big fan of those who thing they own anything enough to tell you could land on the beach that abutts their property, regardless of what deeds might say otherwise. Its so unfortunate that someone could not suffer your landing on an otherwise used beach and moreso without knowing why or for how long you planned to stay.
  2. Saturday night sounds more inviting, a reasonable likelihood. Why move from Lane's Cove, though? Whatever you choose I'll keep tabs. Maybe we can work on Jeff's less-than-bombproof roll.
  3. I used a bit of stiff tubing on my first boat but presently all I need is a couple knots across the span. You can even tie a sliding knot I can't name or describe that is adjustable, thus leaving the possiblity of tying something other than the spare paddle down..
  4. Considering packing efficiency and short to moderate trips consider cooking nothing at all and instead doing fine with nuts, cheese, and dried fruit/vegetables. This works well for more strenuous activities that paddling so should do well by paddlers. Then there's no stove to light (or not light) and all that. Yogurt is also good for a day or two, as are hard boiled eggs, and then there's that yogurt variant brought up recently (by Suzannne?).
  5. I miss my laps around the pond from last number. The new office location is just too far away. Never saw any jellies but did see goldfish/carp more than once. I wonder if the heron(s) like them with peanut butter.
  6. WD-40 is readily rinsed so I would be similarly skeptical of its effectiveness as a rust preventitve. Back when cars had distributors it was also used to displace water inside the cap thus restoring the engine if wet, after splashing in a large puddle, etc.
  7. As an exercise we swamped a boat. Rolling was easier, that is returning upright was easier, but the momentum of the boat was such that I found myself going back over until I backed off on the sweep. The cargo weight lowers your center of gravity for rolling making rolling easier.
  8. As some have already said it depends on the conditions and the company, not a yes or no question. Reminds me of a day Roger Pollock spent in Goose Cove, which for me includes practice in riding moderate standing waves AND rolling. Got back to the car, opened the hatch, and there was my PFD in the back. So I guess its not just if you remember to bring it but if you remember to put it on.
  9. Ernier (subaruguru) paddles one recently, though he may be out of town for awhile.
  10. One of the club's founders read a book and/or watched a video on rolling then went out one afternoon and learned how. Does anyone remember who this is? Hint: he lives on the North Shore. As for learning to roll, how much instruction you need, etc. your mileage will vary. I know another long time member, and a recognized expert on many things physical, who was coaxed to roll several times at Mystic Lake until he started to think too much about it. As far as I know, these moments were the only where he reliably rolled. I'd say go out and try but don't allow for much failure or success before getting a few pointers. Failure can lead to frustration, and it should be about joy, you know. Success can lead to bad habits, thus the pointers. Best of luck.
  11. It would appear that you don't take the paddle apart each time you use it and rinse the ferrule and/or lubricate it enough. I could suggest other materials to try to separate it such as WD40 but you've probably already thought of them. You do need to allow them to penetrate. As for lubricants, we find silicon lubricants stand up best to the salt water. P.S. -A greenland paddle does not have this annoying design flaw.
  12. Appropriately, your report will see them abandoned by kayakers and an object of scorn.
  13. Outdoor storage as a long term strategy has a downside. Plastic boats are especially prone to UV degradation. Those who care will notice the colours of other boats fading. UV protection of glass, etc. boats depends on the inhibitors in the gel coat, which does get scraped off now and then.
  14. You should never decide on a boat from any number of reviews. You might get in the (this) boat and find it works fine for you. Any worthwhile vendour should be willing to allow you to take it out.
  15. Have you considered locking on top of your car? One of the club founders did so while living in Waltham years ago. A recent visitor did so in Cambridge without incident. I've seem u-bolts installed for this purpose but you can get long sturdy cables that require no such modifications to your boat.
  16. Yes, bears are probably smarter than sharks. An interesting show comes up on PBS stations from time to time of a place out west where the test bear boxes. Its fascinating how deliberate the bears are at trying to open a new box. I posted the sharks~=bears message in part to inject a bit of levity and also to pass on the recent findings about pack behaviour observed in sharks. I think we generally underestimate the intelligent of other species on this planet and also that all species undergo continuous evolution and learning.
  17. A different theory would be more in line with documented behaviour of bears. Bears learn the weak points in various automobiles and apparently even teach this to, or learn this from, other bears. Suppose the sharks are, like bears, simply trying to find the easiest way to peel the kayak off of the soft gooey snack inside. What's more, sharks were long thought to be solitary hunters but recent behaviour has been observed where sharks drive prey to other sharks and otherwise operate in an organized manner. Perhaps this shark was waiting for another to do the dirty deed and the second shark chickened out, kind of like a gang initiation gone bad.
  18. As for parking on Pebble Beach it is allowed during the day at the southern end, there is a sign part way down delineating what might be residents only parking.
  19. 10% off (of $2499) more than covers the (MITA) membership fee.
  20. Part one is easy, Pebble Beach is closest. Part two not so much, I'd wonder where your truck would be in the morning if you parked at Lane's Cove, which is a managable paddle for you and not overly long. I'd expect you'd have bad luck at any location I can think of. There are several who live close enough to the water on Cape Ann who might offer to have you park in their driveway overnight, but I'll leave it to them. Perhaps you could reply with likely bribes.
  21. I'd contact the CG, perhaps they'd accept a securite call to deflect attention or suggest/accept something a more organized.
  22. I think the best thing is to turn them in to the local fire department.
  23. Confirming. Apparently I cannot send a message to you but I think my e-mail is still in the system.
