  1. We three kayaks of N-S-P-N Paddled by Italian men Pole was greasy Seas were easy Practice our rolls again I was stressing as I was heading over to Rocky Neck that the parking lot would be packed due to St. Peter's Fiesta and we would need to be creative in getting the trip started. To my delight, there were plenty of spaces and I quickly spotted Beth and Fred. We had a short prelaunch meeting about the best route to take to Greasy Pole and what we might do in addition. Fortunately the boat traffic in the main Inner Harbor channel was dead quiet as we shot across to get a good spot to watch the Friday challengers walk across the pole. I've only ever viewed the event from shore and it was so wild to be right out in the middle of it all. Was glad to see so many first responder boats waiting at ready in case of an injury. After watching about two rounds without anyone succeeding at grabbing the flag from the pole's end, we decided to make our way west and follow the shore along to Good Harbor. We chose to land at Half Moon Beach for a quick break to find that sadly the restrooms at the welcome center close at 5:45 (was around 6:30 or so at this point). Getting back on the water, we started to head a little south of Cressy's Beach and then east to the opposite side of the Outer Harbor channel. We took in some bird watching around Ten Pound Island as we made our way back to Wonson's Cove. Beth suggested a quick skill session and Fred was game for some rolls. I can only hope to gain more confidence in attempting such moves over the course of this season. Thank you Beth and Fred for coming out for a fun time out in Gloucester Harbor!
  2. Looking a little damp perhaps tomorrow but we'll bring the sunshine with us as we watch the loonies take a chance on the pole. Please register at the calendar event if you are planning on coming out and I'll send along pre-trip and float plan info.
  3. Any takers? I'm open to other suggestions if that gets me on the water with a new friend tomorrow
  4. Anyone interested in paddling in Essex River/Bay or Plum Island Sound on Tuesday 6/20?
  5. Thanks for organizing, Joe. And thanks to all for a nice paddle!
  6. A few snaps from the tidal flats paddle. Big thanks to Jeff for leading. Really nice to meet all at the launch this morning! And thanks to Ann and Peter for a fun paddle.
  7. Thanks Jeff. Tidal flats were my plan. Will be curious to meet all and see what kind of gear everyone likes using.
  8. Very intrigued to learn some history about Lowell and its natural history while paddling. This event is perfect to bring along those with less experience or looking to get into the hobby. The kayak center does have equipment to provide (kayak, PFD) but you'll get a bit of a discount if you bring your own kayak and gear. I believe this is the first summer they are offering this style of tour. Please RSVP at the calendar listing only once you have registered for the event at their website found here: https://www.uml.edu/campusrecreation/programs/kayak-center/programs/other.aspx
  9. Ooo, I think that’s part of Coastsweep, an international cleanup that takes place from Sept to Nov each year. I have some contacts at Coastwatch and am curious to see if Misery will be on their list of locations this year. Will report back with what I can find out.

“ Lowell History and Natural History Sunset Paddle Tour Our history paddle tour focuses on the history of Lowell and the part that the Merrimack River played in developing our city. There is lots to learn about the Merrimack River watershed, the Native American history, the canals, and our natural resources up to the current day. Your guides will also seek out natural plants and animals on the shore and share what they can about the world around us, right here in Lowell! This sunset tour stays on the flatwater portion of the Merrimack River above the dam. Kayaks or canoes are available for use. ” RSVP after you’ve registered at this link: https://www.uml.edu/campusrecreation/programs/kayak-center/programs/other.aspx You’ll have to scroll down the page and make sure to pick the July 24th event. Note that it’ll only cost $20 if you bring your own kayak. Good opportunity to bring along anyone looking to dip their toe into the sport of paddling. This is a U Lowell event, not an NSPN event.
  11. Rock on, Liz! Just made an event post to the calendar if you’d like to RSVP there
  12. Event details can be found on the Message Board under Trips/Events entitled “Greasy paddle anyone?” or go to https://www.nspn.org/forum/topic/14741-greasy-float-anyone/
  13. Looking to see if anyone might be interested in watching the seine boat race and greasy pole competition in Gloucester Friday June 23. Would plan to launch from Wonson Cove in Rocky Neck around 4:00 pm.
  14. Will the skill session be happening next Sunday? I can’t find details and want to be able to plan as far ahead as possible. This would be my first event since joining the group. what kinds of clothes would one need for immersion? Is a seals splash deck enough for a spray skirt?
  15. Is there a way to change your status on the calendar? I won’t be able to make this trip. But I look forward to the upcoming skill share event.
  16. Can’t see it from cockpit. It’s actually behind on the port side. Not sure how many launch from the park across from the rocky neck parking lot in Gloucester. The ramp certainly could be in better repair. Anyway, after a paddle, I was trying to come back up it and my trolley (the wheels you use for assistance) collapsed down. Instead of being patient and resting it up I just strong armed it up to the grass. I was thinking the resistance I felt was from the wheels grinding on its frame not on my kayak. Wondering what the best way to advocate for an improved ramp would be since I live here. Guessing a message to the waterways committee.
  17. Adding pics as requested. In the moment I thought it was bigger than how it looks today. Went for a paddle and can confirm I didn’t take on water from it.
  18. New member and new owner of a wilderness systems tsunami 145. Ended up gouging a spot on the hull while being bullish with my trolley. How can I repair? Is this better repaired by a pro vs watching a YouTube video and taking a blowtorch to it?
