  1. Weather and conditions look nice for a Sunday trip. Temperatures in the 70s, water in the 60s. Small long period swell predicted, probably enough to provide a little excitement here and there. Reply here if interested and I'll start a group message for the trip. Reservation required at Odiorne. Total trip around 10nm.
  2. Yes Ed, Jack said it was the Lynx, It just slipped my mind when I posted.
  3. Yes, so edited. I must have been thinking knautical miles?
  4. We met at the Kittery Town Dock for an early 7:15 pickup by Jack Farrell of https://www.seacoastmaritimecharters.com/. In our group were me, David Mercer (co-coordinator), Sue Hriciga, Barbara Ryan, Jody Harris, Susan Rask, and Joyce Carpenter. The weather was sunny and calm, a cool morning living up to the forecast. Soon we were on our way out to the islands. The guy in the hoodie was not one of us. Heading out after a brief visit to Haley's Cove on Smuttynose we began an counterclockwise coastal route on the outside of Smuttynose, Cedar, and Star. Although the predicted swell was only a foot, it was able to kick up some trouble on the ledges and rock faces. Some of us went looking for trouble and some were happy to watch from deeper water. Unfortunately I got surprised by a combination of drain and wave outside of Star and was unable to get my paddle clear to roll up. The water was a comfortable temperature though and David towed me over to calmer waters before a standard rescue. I located a long, wide slot that Bob Levine and I had enjoyed on a previous trip but the water was a little low to try it. We headed on to White Island hoping to land for lunch as we had mostly not eaten since 4 am but could not find a place we liked to land. Heading back to Gosport we chose the usual lunch spot at Haley's Cove. After lunch we circumnavigated Appledore as the predicted breeze freshened from the southeast. Total distance 8.7nm. Returning we passed close to a beautiful replica tall ship. Nice ending to the day!
  5. This trip is full. Message me to be on a wait list.
  6. Forecast is looking good for this trip and there's still room on the boat. We will be picked up at the Kittery Town Dock in Pepperell Cove at 7:15. You have to arrive in time to drop off equipment and walk back .4 mile from parking at the school so it's an early start. Message me if you want to be added to the list and include information for a float plan. Club waiver is required.
  7. No link. Private message me and I'll add you to the list. Details will come via a group message. I'll add you Barbara.
  8. Conditions look favorable as of this morning for this Sunday, 8/14. Light winds and 2' swell will likely make for sporty conditions on the outside. Please message me if you would like to attend, I will start a group message for participants.
  9. This trip is going to happen soon, on a Sunday, as soon as favorable conditions are predicted. I'm posting now since this Sunday, 8/7, is a possibility but only if the chance of thunder and lightning gets out of the forecast, which is not likely. This year the trip cost is $50 which includes a gratuity for Jack. Pickup is at 7am at Kittery Town Dock. You have to be there in time to drop off equipment and move your car to the school .4 miles away so it's a very early start. Please reply here if you would like to go this Sunday or next. Edit: Just checked Windy after posting and this Sunday is not looking good. Let's hope for next weekend!
  10. Not that inexpensive. Assuming 100% efficiency, (getting one kWh of charge for every kWh consumed), if I average 4 miles/kWh when the utility rate reaches $.24/kWh that's $2.40 to go 40 miles. An efficient gas powered vehicle is currently spending $4.something to go 40 miles. So yes, it's cheaper than gas, but gas is likely to come down some and electricity go up. They're not all that far apart. Charge your car with solar if you can! The free level 2 chargers are great but unless you can use them overnight, like at a motel, they're not much of a solution. Recently on that trip home from Vermont I thought I was cutting it close so I plugged in for free at an outlet mall about 12 miles from home and ran some errands while eliminating any doubt about making it home. I can picture a lot of people's eyes glazing over reading this thread if they even read it. This is definitely not for everyone. In 25 years, (I'll be 94!) we may look back at EVs as a cute "bridge technology" to something that really solves our environmental problems. I'm not optimistic.
  11. It's a club event in that it is a collaboration between UNH and NSPN and that it gives club members an opportunity to "pay it forward" by introducing some young people to seakayaking. That being said it may make sense to have it be totally under the UNH umbrella, in which case it would make sense to move the thread to "Events Sponsored Externally"
  12. Joe and Sue, we're working on those details now and I want to wait until I know for sure rather than talk about options. I can say I have been assuming it will be open to students only with no fee. UNH does open some of it's programs to "community members" for a fee, some of us have attended pool sessions this way, but that's not how I see this going.
  13. Bob Levine and I have been working with Meg Iverson and Ian Ayer from the UNH Recreation Department to do some seakayak workshops this fall. The details are still in the works but the plan is to have an introductory session at the UNH pool or a freshwater location, to be followed by an ocean trip. We need help. Bob will be the lead instructor but we need people who are willing to both bring an extra boat, paddle and skirt to loan a participant, and to be willing to assist in getting people comfortable with wet exits and assisted rescues. These events will occur in October. Ask any questions here but if you want to be involved please contact me by other means so I can develop a list.
  14. So I know Tesla has their own program but for others DC fast charging is sort of expensive. I had a not kayak related trip to northern Vermont, almost to Canada. The only fast chargers were in the St Johnsbury area. I wasn't confident I could get to my destination and back to St Johnsbury so I stopped on the way up to top up. So here's the thing, some chargers you pay by the kilowatt hour and some you pay by the minute. Generally the kwh is between $.35 and $.50. At $.35/kwh if I'm doing the math right it's roughly equivalent to paying $3.50/gallon for for gas. And if you pay by the minute and want to get a full charge, it starts to slow down at 60% and slows down more as the charge approachs full. I may have paid almost $.80/kwh to get enough to get to my destination and back home. I'm wondering which will advance faster, availability of charging or proliferation of evs. For now, charging at home with solar is best.
  15. David Mercer, Prudence Baxter and I did a test run of this trip with the change in pickup locations and parking from last year. It was a beautiful day and the main takeaway was that even with very mild predicted conditions, the outside of the islands and the shoals can get pretty sporty. I'm watching for good conditions to post a trip soon, probably on a Sunday. IMG_3688.MOV
  16. Update: I did my first ocean trip today, Canterbury to Odiorne and back. I did pretty good on the way there but it was pretty much downhill and with a pretty consistent 10-12kt tailwind. I got 4.2 miles per kwh which is actually above average for the Bolt. By the time I finished my 102 mile round trip I was down to 3.7 m/kwh which means I was down to 3.2 on the return trip. The bottom line is if I can get 3.7 on my 65 Kwh battery my effective round trip range leaving a 10% cushion would be 106 miles. The only place I go commonly that challenges that range is Lane's Cove. Beyond that I need to find some good fast chargers on my routes. Of course game changes during the winter but maybe not that much since I don't paddle below 30 degrees. I've noticed that trips to the ocean are generally downhill on average and uphill on the way home. That means you can't get overconfident just because you did well on the way there. I wonder if our gas vehicles get the same 10% or so reduction in efficiency with a boat on the rack.
  17. I'm unavailable this weekend but don't let that stop you! Conditions look nice, almost too mild.
  18. Did you send him an email as well? He hasn't been active here except for that post and is unlikely to see your question.
  19. Finally got my Yakima rack installed and went to the local pond to cool off with some rolling practice. Ready to go on a longer trip to assess the effect on range of the kayak on the roof. I'm anticipating getting some grief from people I've teased about having bad color combinations of cars and kayaks...?
  20. To avoid confusion, could you please start a separate thread for those wishing to paddle the crossing?
  21. Planning on doing at least a couple of shuttle trips to Isles of Shoals with Jack Farrell of https://www.seacoastmaritimecharters.com/. The idea is to eliminate the long crossings to have more time to explore the islands. This year will be a little different from last, with a pickup and dropoff at the Kittery Town Dock in Pepperell Cove. The cost has gone up to $40 per person and boat, which was expected because of the huge increase in cost of diesel. Watch this space if you're interested, I'll be looking for favorable conditions and hoping to post a trip in July. This should be considered a level 3 trip, even in mild conditions. Here's a trip report from last year and a few pictures.
  22. I thought we could keep an eye out for this boat for this guy: https://nh.craigslist.org/boa/d/rowley-stolen-green-tarpon-160i-kayak/7499643734.html
  23. Matt Drayer has graciously offered to do this workshop again this year. If you've always wondered what paddling a surfski is like this is a great opportunity. Matt may also be the clubs leading expert on the mechanics of the forward stroke. We hope to do this again from Fisherman's Beach sometime in July. Reply here if interested.
  24. I'm a maybe for the trip, flexible on level, not staying for potluck.
  25. Car sold, Thule crossbars still available. Should fit others with same rail profile.
