  2. Are you looking to make new friends to paddle safely with? Do you have an interest in kayaking on the ocean but don't know what's involved? Have you never been kayaking before, and want some information to see if it is even something you might be interested in doing? NSPN is once again running a "New To Sea Kayaking" program starting with a land-based workshop where we will explain who we are as a club and offer a number of presentations on various aspects of kayaking. The workshops are designed to be informative and social using a combination of lectures as well as hands-on activities, with plenty of opportunity for Q&A. This workshop will be followed up in the coming weeks with a pool session, lake session, and ocean trip. Details will be presented at the workshop. Date: Sunday April 26th Time: 10:00am - 2:00pm (with lunch break) Location: The Gould Barn, 1 Howlett Street, Topsfield, MA Cost: FREE! - Yes, this is a completely free event and available to the general public! Questions and registration can be submitted to ntskw@nspn.org. Registration is required so that we can manage logistics and provide additional information. We hope to see you there!!

  6. NSPN likes to offer workshops for the benefits of it's members during the cold winter months as a means to take advantage of the "downtime" and keep general interest in the sport fresh. These workshops are offered through the generosity of our fellow members volunteering their time and knowledge, very often as a means to pay back the knowledge they gained from other members over the years. Not ready to run a workshop yourself? You can still help! These workshops might also need support staff to do such thing as source a venue, setting up furniture, or managing registrations. Many current and past presenters first started out just helping out others until they gained the confidence to run their own workshops. There are a vast number of topics that can be offered as part of a series, or an independent full-day workshop, or just a short segment. Here is a list of past workshops to choose from or inspiration to pick a different topic: Weather Tides Waves Currents Trip Planning Navigation and/or Chart Reading Group/Incident Management Maintenance / Repair (Gear or Equipment) Camping Cold Water New-To-Sea-Kayaking (established program - need volunteers!!) If you are interested in organizing, presenting, or just helping out with a workshop based on any of the above topics, or something different, please contact me or other Directors to let us know how you want to be involved or just for help promoting something you are already putting together.
  7. From the reports of those who took a walk near the water this morning, it would seem that a land-based lunch was a good choice. It was good to see those who could make it, and celebrate the New Year with some friends. Thanks for being there!
  8. Happy New Year everyone!! Just a quick update on number of pool session spots that are still available: Saturday, January 4 1:00pm-3:00pm - 5 spots open Saturday, January 18 1:00pm-3:00pm - 9 spots open Sunday, February 9 10:00am-12:30pm - 9 spots open Saturday, February 15 1:00pm-3:00pm - 9 spots open Sunday, February 23 10:00am-12:30pm - 8 spots open Saturday, March 7 1:00pm-3:00pm - 7 spots open Saturday, March 14 1:00pm-3:00pm - 8 spots open Sunday, March 22 10:00am-12:30pm - 9 spots open Keep in mind that we only post periodic updates, and sessions could sell after this posting, so you should always go into the store to see how many spots are actually available for each session.
  9. Should we call for a reservation if that is what we are doing. Can people chime in so we can have an approximate head count?
  10. The wind gusts might me less there.
  11. How are people feeling about weather?
  12. I can bring a boat for you, John. PM or email me and we can figure out what will fit you best.
  13. What has started out as just something to do has, as with many other NSPN events, become a tradition! Weather looks like it might be (relatively!) favorable to hold a New Year's Day paddle along the North Shore somewhere to be decided based upon experience & desire of attendees and weather conditions. This will probably be a journey-style trip (as opposed to a surf or rock play event) somewhere in the 10+/- nautical mile range, and all who have the proper clothing (drysuits & insulation, gloves or poggies, hat or hood, etc.) are welcome to join. If you have not paddled in cold water before and are interested, please post questions here or contact me privately, otherwise post interest here and we will continue to discuss once weather forecast becomes available.

Pool sessions at the Haverhill High School for the upcoming winter season are now available for purchase in the Store. These sessions are offered as a benefit to being a paid member of NSPN, and therefore are only available to active members. If you are experiencing any issues with your membership, please email Membership@NSPN.org and we will work as quickly as possible to resolve it. As in years past, we are required to have club insurance in order to use the pool facilities, so we are using the ACA club insurance program again. You will need to download the ACA Adult Liability Waiver form here, or in the Downloads section of the message board and print one for EACH pool session you will attend. You will not be allowed to participate in a pool session if you do not complete a Liability Waiver form for that session. Each pool session spot will cost $25, but if you are not an ACA member, you will need to pay the additional $5 ACA Event Fee per session. You can become an ACA member by signing up here and selecting North Shore Paddlers Network from the Paddle America Clubs drop-down list. The annual membership fee is $25 for individuals, which will be "paid back" in only five pool sessions since there is no Event Fee for ACA members. These sessions are a great way to keep existing skills active over the cold winter months or work on new skills for the upcoming paddling season. Although NSPN does not offer official instruction, many members are willing to offer whatever assistance they can while they are at the pool. However, if you would like to pay for professional instruction, you can seek out an instructor directly, either from NSPN members (some of who are actually certified!) or from other professional instructors. If the instructor will have a boat in the pool, they will need a pool session spot purchased. If they are only going to instruct from the poolside, then they do not need a spot. Regardless, all attendees (whether in the pool or instructing poolside) MUST have an ACA Waiver and pay the $5 Event Fee if they are not an ACA member. The dates for the sessions are as follows: Saturday, January 4 1:00pm-3:00pm Saturday, January 18 1:00pm-3:00pm Sunday, February 9 10:00am-12:30pm Saturday, February 15 1:00pm-3:00pm Sunday, February 23 10:00am-12:30pm Saturday, March 7 1:00pm-3:00pm Saturday, March 14 1:00pm-3:00pm Sunday, March 22 10:00am-12:30pm Pool sessions can only be purchased through the Store using PayPal for payment. For those of you that do not have a PayPal account, you can do a one-time transaction through PayPal using a credit card without creating a PayPal account if you don't want to, or create an account instantly if you so choose. It is very easy to do, but if you have trouble, email Membership@NSPN.org or Private Message me and I will help you out. Please follow these instructions for pool session purchases: Click on this link to go to the list of pool session dates (or access them through the Store link in the blue top banner on the message board) Choose the pool session date that you want to attend and click Add To Cart If you are not an ACA member, you must Add To Cart the $5 Event Fee, otherwise Add To Cart the ACA Active Member In the next window, don't worry about the Associate This Package option and just click Add To Cart again If you would like to add another pool session, click on Continue Shopping, otherwise skip to Step #8 Select Pool Sessions from the Product Categories list on the left Repeat steps #2-#4 for each pool session you want to add (you must add the $5 event fee to each session if not an ACA member) When you are ready to pay for your selections, click Checkout and then Confirm My Order. You will be taken to PayPal to pay for your order. We cannot issue any refunds unless the pool facility closes due to inclement weather or other reasons. If you are unable to attend a pool session after purchase and would like to let someone else purchase the session from you, you must make those arrangements on your own. We will try to post a reminder for each session to which you can look for someone to purchase your slot, or start a new posting if you choose. They must bring their own ACA Liability Release form, and pay the $5 Event Fee if required. All pool sessions are offered in partnership with the ACA and are ACA sanctioned events.

We will try to post a reminder for each session to which you can look for someone to purchase your slot, or start a new posting if you choose. 23. The NSPN Board of Directors is the decision-making body of the club, and much of what we do is reviewing ongoing club business (finances, membership, website, etc.), managing workshops and club events, creating policies, and discussing the overall direction of the club. Aside from three officer positions, there are no set duties associated with individual BOD positions, but instead tasks are undertaken on a volunteer basis. Currently, the BOD meets in Reading once a month on a Tuesday night from September to May, taking June through August off to enjoy the summer. We try to keep the atmosphere relaxed and conversational, so probably not what you think when you imagine a corporate Board Meeting. Our terms run from January through December, and we have a fair number of current Directors not returning next year for various reasons, so would like to extend an invitation to any current NSPN members who would like to be considered for a position on the Board. We are also reaching out to the NSPN community for individuals who might not want to be a Director but would be interested in assisting the Board and the club by volunteering to assist with some of the many activities the club organizes over the year. There is the annual winter party, pool sessions, workshops and various other outreach programs, and trips that often need some people working in the background to help make things happen. Historically, NSPN has been founded upon the concept of "Pay It Forward", where those who have grown with the club over the years turn around and offer what they can to newer paddlers. There is some confusion that the Pay It Forward model is supposed to be an educational system, with peers teaching peers, and many people find that intimidating. Really, it is supposed to be more of a mentoring system where members offer whatever they can to their fellow paddlers, which might include sharing of knowledge, or just being an emotional support for someone practicing a new skill or technique. This model has produced an active community of sea kayakers with diverse interests, whether it be those who enjoy relaxing day trips to more exciting adventures, weekend camping trips and international adventures. We have managed to produce some pretty good paddlers, but more importantly, a strong community based on the shared interest of being out on the water. One of the biggest benefits to being a member of NSPN is the willingness of others to help the community to continue to grow. This winter, like many in the past, we will be offering workshops and events at no cost to members only because other members volunteer there time to make them happen. However, in order for that to work, we need volunteers to step up and Pay It Forward to the community that has helped them get to where they are. We expect to have a schedule of events posted soon, and hope to see both long time members and new members involved. If you are interested, or know someone who might be, please send me or any of the other Directors a Private Message or email robert@NSPN.org. Please include a quick paragraph stating why you want to be a Director or volunteer. Any member of NSPN will be considered, no matter how long you have been a member of the club. Please have any nominations submitted to me no later than December 1st, and feel free to ask me or any other board members if you have any questions. Thank you, Robert Folster PRESIDENT (rfolster) Mike Habich TREASURER (mhabich) Sue Hriciga (SueH.) Nick Pearson (NPearson) Jane Cobb (JaneC)
