  1. We really don't do much with warnings. We tend not to warn spammers we normally skip directly to deleting the spam, deleting the spammers account and at times block the IP address that they sourced from.

If you get X warnings your account gets locked for XX days. Again, I don't recall using the feature.

All is explained! Thank you. pru

  2. Prudence, We can only see our own warn status that's why it looks like no one else has it. To tell you the truth I'm not entirely sure what it's all about....maybe Jason can give an explanation.

Ah! So I am not alone! I can live with an incomprehensible status as long as everyone else is living with one too!

  3. When I post anything, I notice that there is a bar that says "warn status" on the bottom after my name, group, posts, and joined info. No one else seems to have that. Not to be paranoid or anything, but am I missing something here? How do I get rid of it?

    Thanks!

  4. The Jewell trip was wonderful. We had: sun, wind, clouds, fog, drizzle and pouring rain over the three day period. We had: swells (not too big), chop (not too much), and beautiful glassy water where it was hard to tell the difference between water and sky. We had: a Saturday trip over to Eagle Island, where the paths were closed to us because of nesting birds, but the picnic tables were open and no one was there to charge us money to eat lunch. We ate well, drank...well, slept well enough, and explored the island. As advertised, a really nice L3 trip and shakedown for future kayak camping.

One thing it DIDN'T do was give me great confidence in the accuracy of long range weather forecasting!

Many, many thanks to Gary for initiating and doing a great job of herding cats when cats needed herding! And for those mussels (thanks also to Mary's more strenuous efforts in the harvesting department).

  5. I spoke to Lawrence Bussey at MITA and have tentatively proposed Saturday 6/11. This has to be confirmed by the steward on duty for that week, so this is a tentative date. If for some reason this date does not work we can propose others.

The cottage is spacious, but basic. There is a limit of 6 people, mostly to limit the use of the outhouse. You must be a MITA member and should consider making a donation for the island upkeep.

I'd suggest an early start with a BIB time of 9:00am, this will allow plenty of time to make the crossing get settled, hike and explore the other islands. Weather will trump all other concerns for this trip. It's a solid Level 4 trip, dry suits required and you should only consider it if you have paddled to the shoals before or have made similar long distance open water crossings.

Let me know if you are interested or if you have questions, concerns or suggestions. I'll follow up with a "formal" trip proposal.

Finally, Lawrence is proposing running a trip where he would take a number of kayaks out on his lobster boat; participants could then explore the islands, stay the night and return the next day; the cost would be nominal (ie. cover costs) and he would like to gauge interest. Would be a great way to experience the Shoals without the long crossing. Let me know if this is something you would do and I will pass it on.

    Barry.

I would be interested in the going over in the lobster boat trip - last year's endless thread makes me realize that would be the only way at this point I could safely explore what sounds like a fun area - pru

  6. I know that there have been previous threads about waterproof (or "waterproof") marine radios, but I'd appreciate advice on what to get that is: reliable, cheap (whatever that means), gets the job done. I don't need extra the bells and whistles (whatever they might be). How much should I figure on spending?

I am NOT a techno gearhead type person and would prefer something that doesn't come with a 200 page manual to teach you how to work it!

    Thanks for any advice.

  7. while your manner and intent are surely different, you said it yourself...confronting them. how likely are you to be be open to some perceived self righteous clown CHALLENGING your ability or preparedness to do something?

in your dry suit, you could always get in to burp it and make a big show and proclamation to your paddling buddies about "wow, glad i have this on, you wouldn't last long in water like this" sort of thing but how else are you going to make the point?

if you can cajole, coax, urge persuade, express concern, bequile, enchant or otherwise wheedle this point of view across you've won...and are possibly a politician i won't spit at.

few years back someone asked as to whether or not they should PHYSICALLY prevent someone from launching...which is, what? assault or battery? i can never remember. in any event, probably a bad idea.

That would be battery - assault would be just shaking your fist at them in a menacing manner - pru

  8. I remember reading an article in Sea Kayak mag some time ago about a man in a kayak being run over by a powerboat. Luckily, just before impact, he rolled over. That lesson has stayed with me (and hopefully will never need it!): Get upside down quick if you're about to be hit.

What a lucky story for your friend - and his boat.. (I don't think the kayak in the magazine article fared as well...)
