  1. If you're new (sort of) to kayaking, you may enjoy going out with others and learning from/with them. I'm glad to see you've joined NSPN. Keep track of the "trips" message board. As the ocean temperature warms up into May and June, more trips will be posted. All of us are wearing dry suits (or maybe wet suits) at this time of year because the water is so cold. There will be trips to join almost every weekend through the summer. So join us on the water! You can check out everyone's gear, learn about new places to paddle, meet new people, and have a good time. pru
  2. Thanks everyone for your advice. I will check when I got camera, and in any event send it back to Panasonic for whatever they need to do with it. Hopefully it will be back and in working order for many scheduled events in May! pru
  3. Not sure exactly which model (I'm at work now) but I know it's the same one that Phil A has. I'll have to look to see if it's still under warranty - I bought it around a year ago. Definitely not my money's worth if it is dead and not replaceable...
  4. I have - and have been happy with - my (supposedly) waterproof Panasonic Lumix (same one that a lot of nspn folks have and have liked). Happy until I went to take some pictures of a huge tree that was just taken down behind my house and the camera was completely frozen up. While it turned on, none of the important buttons (shutter, zoom etc) worked. So no pictures of the cool downed tree. I was recently on vacation in the Virgin Islands and took a lot of underwater pictures, cleaned it (I thought) faithfully with fresh water after every use etc. Took it out this past wknd for a paddle and took some pix and everything was fine. But three days later, it doesn't work. So....does anyone have suggestions about best place to have camera diagnosed/repaired? Hunt's camera? Send it back to Panasonic? Thanks - pru
  5. Count me in for a Saturday evening after a paddle supper/talk/slideshow. pru
  6. What a beauty - can't wait to see her when she's all dolled up and ready to ride! pru
  7. You can enter it for me, Warren - as I'm not on facebook. We'll split the winnings! pru
  8. Done! I'll vote for any picture that has my boat in it! pru
  9. And it sure was fun walking down Bearkskin Neck in Rockport (in search of facilities...ahem...) among the tourists - many of whom in shorts and t-shirts - in our HOT dry suits, looking very much like visitors from another planet. Beautiful day, and a perfect rites of summer paddle indeed. pru
  10. Have never paddled in this area, so would be interested in the theoretical "harder" of the paddles... pru
  11. If I can get my act together, me too! pru
  12. Just as a matter of curiosity... Has anyone ever had gear stolen when they've either pitched their tent or left gear to be dealt with later and then gone out for an afternoon or a day paddle? (Maybe my even asking is a reflection of living in the wrong part of the world for too long - you know, where people lock their car doors and houses even during the daytime...) pru
  13. I finally understand the rules about talking about MITA islands from asking this question a number of times myself: Public islands can be named. Private islands can't. The MITA guide makes clear which is which. pru
  14. Re: Exped Synmat pads. Comfortable for the sleeper, maybe, but, man...those things are NOISY! You'll need a lot more than one benadryl and a shot of your favorite whatever to get through the night if you're next door to someone who has one. When I'm camping with someone who uses one, I want to pitch my tent as far away as I can! pru
  15. Thanks everyone for all the advice. I ended up remembering I had an LL Bean promo gift card for 10 bucks - which was going to expire in five days - andf they had the sea to summit head net, so it ended up costing me under $2 - with free shipping. For that price, I'll live with an imperfect product! pru
  16. Any recommendations on best mosquito head net would be greatly appreciated! Am fighting back so the little devils won't wreck any camping trips this summer. pru
  17. And as I recall, there was so much extra potluck food from the first night that the second night was potluck as well - even though not planned to be so! pru
  18. Fun last year - hope for more fun this year; count me in - pru
  19. And some of mine, too? And maybe that fondue pot we were talking about? pru
  20. Thank you! That's exactly what I was looking for, but was looking on the wrong side of the profile page...
  21. How does one change info on one's nspn profile? I've gone to my profile, but can't figure out how to edit info there. pru
  22. As always, Doug, your pictures tell the story of the day. Wish I could have been there - but alas had other plans. pru
  23. ....after the pup had already joined us!
  24. Owners? Why, we brought the puppy along as an organic warming device - better than those chemical things Suz was trying to sell us on. He was in my hatch the whole day...well, except when we took him out to warm us up in the shelter on the beach... pru
  25. Ditto to everything Bob said. And kudos to Phil, our pod leader, for dealing with unanticipated problems in a thoroughly professional way. And, yes, in addition to chemical warmers and dry gloves inside the dry suit, stashing a squirming warm puppy in your gear for quick off the water warmings is one thing that we thought of that Suz and Scott hadn't in their otherwise completely comprehensive briefing! pru
