  1. The only days that I can paddle in Boston are Thursdays and Fridays. If anybody can spend more time paddling I'd spend some time in the Harbor too on either of those days. Sid
  2. Rick, you are tempting me to try a ski. I've found myself paddling with my wing more and more. It makes all those long solo paddles I do up in Phippsburg even longer and more interesting since I try to avoid rough water solo anyway. I'm also hoping Leon will let me try his Epic the next time we paddle out of Tucks. I can usually put on a little kick in my Force Cat 4. Sid
  3. Wow time flies. It feels like I just re-uped. Of course I'll pay my dues and support this superlative organization. Thanks for the reminder. Sid
  4. Peter my PM facility on this site is not working. Please e-mail me at sidcohen@simcatecservices.com.
  5. Ern, Don't forget to contact Impex too. North American Customer Service info@impexkayak.com 828-505-1382
  6. Please don’t let your motion sickness hold you back!! Coastal sea kayaking is a great sport. I’ve been prone to motion sickness since I can remember. Before I started this sport I didn’t even like to drive in the front passenger’s seat as an adult. On road trips I’d drive most of the time. I’ve always wanted to sail boats and fly light planes but my motion sickness held me back. My experience when I picked up this sport over four years ago was that I’d get at least queasy in any sort of swell. However, I fell in love with being out in it. But, I have built up a some level of tolerance. Now I can ride comfortably in the back a car if the driver isn’t pushing the brake to hard repeatedly. It is better for me if I don’t bob around a lot and stare at charts. Surfing not too far from takeout time, is a great way to challenge myself and continue to build my tolerance. Also if you mount strap-on compass on your boat make sure it’s close to the bow. My general practitioner recommend candied ginger, after I asked for a prescription, and that worked pretty well when I was new to the sport until a rough winter’s paddle helped send that stuff all over my spray skirt (cleanup was quick at least). I lost my taste for candied ginger after that. I was really to land, and I was with capable paddlers that were equipped and trained to use tow systems. But, I was able to paddle through moderately rough water for a few nautical miles back to our take-out and I’d like to believe that I was capable if piloting too if necessary. Of course this situation will be different for everyone and different for each paddle, and can be dangerous, as referenced on earlier posts. Now I rarely use herbal remedies or medication. I’ve learned that two Dramamine work better than one1 for me in the rougher stuff, ideally 45 minutes before entering it. My hypotheses, as to why that much Dramamine does not make me drowsy is because of the little bit of adrenaline I get on “interesting seas”. Paddle On!!! P.S In about 2/3 of cases, astronauts in training vomit in the Vomit Comet.
  7. I and two other intrepid travelers used Lanes cove as a resting point during a Camp Ann circumnavigation yesterday. The walls have some damage, it is serious, but not as extensive as it could be. However, the cove is as navigable as it was before the big storm. Sid
  8. I've been getting pretty good at the Cowboy on flat water. I'm inspired by these guys; they make it look easy in real conditions. I't time for me to take it up a notch as soon as the briny gets a little more toasty in the Bays of MA and ME
  9. Thanks Gene, I could use it to foam out the front of my cockpit. I've been meaning to do it for a while. Lets find a time to paddle together next week and I'll pick up the foam. Sid
  10. Hi Ya'll I plan to be there. Lorrie can I use your nose plugs? Still haven't replaced mine. Sid
  11. Hi Steve, I'm teacher too and I like to paddle the coast around Eastern MA, NH, and Southern ME with Level 3 or 3+ paddlers on Tues through Thur. I like to paddle with my wife on the weekends but she paddles to her own drummer. However, I started a small summer camp for teens that requires a lot of prep so right now I'm a bit tied up. After Aug 15 I'll be looking to go out and play in the rocks and surf a lot as I'm trying to improve my paddle finesse in moderate water to reach some personal goals. Enjoy the rest of your summer. Sid
  12. I was always a maybe and now I'm no. I'm hoping to make to to Chebbaco Lake at 5 PM however. Work is getting in the way.
  13. Hey Al, I can go Wednesday. Sid
  14. I can probably make it Tues, Wed or Thur. Sid
  15. Hi Ya'll, My wife and I are headed out to the Seattle Area for a conference in July and we are thinking about taking a day to paddle a little bit of San Juan Islands. Many of the outfitters in that area take people out in tandems. We’d be looking to go in singles, decent ones too. I’m an L3 paddler and my wife is an L2. Does anybody have some experience with outfitters in this area that they would be kind enough to share? Sid Cohen
  16. I think you two rock!! You spread some more smiles with that report too. Sid
  17. Leon, I can't make it Monday but I might be able to make it on Tuesday. Sid
  18. The forecast is now for only clouds in the morning then becoming partly sunny. I'm headed to bed call my cell phone at 978-408-1132 and leave a message if you want to paddle in Boston Harbor or North of it someplace, up as far Southern Maine, tomorrow. Sid Cohen
  19. Does anybody want to paddle a little further North tomorrow were it won't be raining. Like Hampton, NH, Portsmouth, York, etc?
  20. Poop, just checked to forecast again and it looks like we'll have periods of rain throughout the morning and afternoon. Otherwise conditions are still good. I'm probably not psyched to paddle in the rain. I'll paddle in rain to train with professional coaches but not just for a joy ride. I'll check the forecast later this evening and I'll probably call it off then. Sid
  21. Is any one interested in a Level 3 trip out the Graves this Sunday, May 23rd. I'm looking for some exercise so I'd like to paddle out of the public boat launch in Winthrop. Crossing the President Roads is not that big a deal and it will be better this weekend than next weekend too. It would be better for me if I could paddle very early, although I'm willing to go later. I have to drop my wife off at Logan for a very early flight so launching between 7-9 AM would be great. I'll be there a lot earlier. I'm also able launch from some other location like Windmill Point for a shorter paddle. I am happy to navigate and if people want and we can paddle a course that I did last year but I'm also happy to make it a group project too of course in the spirit of the Common Adventure Model. I really enjoy using the small boat nav aid and we can us it together if you want or I'd be happy to use your method of navigation too. Also if we leave early we’ll have lots of time to think about were we want to go once we are out on the Harbor if you like that. The round trip from Winthrop is about 15.5 to 17.5 NM or 18 to 20 statute miles, depending if you want to hoof it straight back from the Graves or rest again on the way back. The forecast looks very calm so far and the tides are favorable. 1 foot seas are forecasted closer in but seas could easily be 3 feet or more once we get to the Graves. . If the forecast holds up we'll have very light breezes against us or quartering the bow as we go out and they'll pick up a tiny bit for a faster trip back to Winthrop. Dry suits are required; the water is still pretty cold. If I remember correctly parking is $5.00 at the boat ramp. Please post your interest here.
