  1. Wow. Hot Tang. ;-) <shudder>

Seriously though, great story Rick. Wondering about the technique of holding on to your boat in conditions like that. Would the 'having one foot in the cockpit while holding on to deck lines...' technique be even less effective ? I could thing of several ways why either technique is simply inadequate in these conditions but I was just wondering of your opinion?

While he warmed up, we sat around drinking our hot Tang and got our minds around what happened.

  2. Hi Ken,

I have just returned from two days in the mountains with my sons and I could not have responded in time to your snub on the previous post which you managed to get locked. That was an accomplishment we haven't seen here in a while.

I don't know where to begin with you but the fact that you came to this discussion board and managed to raise numerous red flags without possibly noticing your lack of social interaction skills is alarming.

In a few posts you managed to

    a) insult our female members with sexist remarks

    B) insult part of our membership by telling them they are old and and not worthy your manliness in open water paddling

    c) provide homophobic remarks to a paddle invite about which you erroneously assumed you were to be the only paddler beside the invitee. Seems that you put down people who practice skills in a pool but don't have the balls to leave your comfy couch to spend overnight in a marine environment close to tide races, waves, rocks etc.. shows that you can handle about 3 hours of 'extreme' but then you need to return home to your security blanket.

    d) show your lack of spelling skills and underlined it with your lack of using a spell checker

    e) show you haven't got a clue about what a blog is and what is a public discussion board

    f) tried to impress us with 20% discount on British boats (I have to admit that was the funniest part of reading your remarks)

    g) show us the virtues of getting drunk on weekdays

The best part, however was your choice of a boat with the name "Xtreme" as a choice to extend (Moderator edit). I'm done with you.

  3. Ken let's paddle next weekend and stay overnight at one of the casco bay islands? I want to test some new camping gear so this would be a great chance to do something as far from the pool as possible. A day trip is just not enough to get a good immersion of elements. A can meet around 8am at Falmouth town landing

  4. Welcome to NSPN Ken. There is a wide variety of paddlers here, with many of abilities that you ascribe to. Initially I thought, "wow, does Ken swing from the branches as he goes hiking or does he just walk the trail?", but at least we know exactly what you seek. Stay tuned for the surf sessions.

Thanks for the response. I hope I didn't offend anyone, but my post seems to be getting interest brewing. For anyone reading this post, Ikayak pretty much 4 out of 5 mornings throughout the week ( As parking becomes more of an issue later on)if anyone wants to pair up. As mentioned on the last thread I am purchasing a new radical rough- water sea-kayak called a Tiderace X-treme to repace a Valley Pintail. The Pintail will be for sale for half the price of a new one if anyones interested. It is less than 1 yr old.

  5. Are you implying that the QCC is a rec boat (evil laugh) ;-) ?

Wow. You have so many people signed up?

Now, I feel like I should help out.

I'll put this on my calendar.

I can bring 4 boats a sun shade shelter and two chairs.

I'd be willing to come with my QCC to give a little variety if you like. Do you have any use for a rec boat (even if it's to point out why they are not good for the ocean)?

  6. I usually bring my own water but I can recall my last visit to the island (sometimes late fall 2011) I recall seeing water gushing off one of the small cliffs on the opposite shore of cocktail cove. Is there a freshwater spring on the island?

  7. that is a sound advice,

You've received a lot of good advice. While my experience kayak camping is limited, my experience in sleeping in strange places without a roof is not. Your best bet is to go out camping with the bare essentials then fill in the gaps. Figure out what you need before you buy too much crap. You might be perfectly comfortable just stringing out a tarp and sleeping on your sprayskirt or you might need to bring every camping gadget imaginable to make your trip bearable.

  8. If you want your tent to last and if the conditions allow then I advise against pitching your tent early and subject it to the UV of the Sun. If you tried to do a test and just pitched a tent in your backyard and left it there all summer you would see that it doesn't take a lot of sunny days to deteriorate the fabric.

If it is cloudy or partly cloudy then I pitch the tent without concern but if we have a scorcher I find a place where my tent will stand but leave my stuff in that location unpacked until late afternoon.

  9. I sit on my frying pan while I paddle.

overcome by a hatch? i don't think so! i wouldn't say that we ndk paddlers are out of luck so much as we're smarter! i have the same fry pan and lash it to the rear deck once all the rest of the gear is stowed - ain't lost one yet! it's a vital piece of gear for "camp pizza" night.

  10. also consider what will your camping needs really be. I venture to say that 90% of us are weekend warriors. Just having a down sleeping bag and taking care of it is not going to give you any issues camping. Usually you'll be out for one night. If you bag gets wet (somehow) overnight then you'll go home the next day anyway :-)

As regards down or synthetic fill bags consider that in cold(er) weather you get condensation in the tent which can dampen/wet your bag. Mr. Crouse has camped in the snow so there must be a solution. This also notes that whatever tent you have make sure it has adequate insulation. We have a tent that is multi-season, i.e. it allows you to cover some of the vent, etc. to reduce air flow in cold(er) weather. Make sure you have a vestibule or similar feature where you can keep things like muddy boots outside the tent.
