  1. All these rules seem to be an overkill when paddling with a group you are familiar with of similar skill level as you. Seems to me that over time we develop pods we like paddling with and then these rules get relaxed (I like it that way).

Seems to me that CAM is great for solstice paddle or a risky paddle like Seguin or IOS but for majority of paddles I have been to where prior forecast and conditions were observed we seem to be doing just fine.

Obviously CAM is important from a liability perspective. After skimming paragraph after paragraph I come to the conclusion that paddling is more fun when going solo or in groups of three.

I will try to make it to the CAM training in the spring. In the past years the schedule worked against me.

  2. Came home from a trip and at my doorstep is a newly delivered Aleutian Paddle that I ordered a few months ago. I unpack it and it is beautiful except I am taken aback by the blade dimensions. I have always assumed that Aleutian paddles have their blades wider than Greenland paddles. Under this assumption I ordered one, thinking I would use it in situations where quick burst of speed would be beneficial i.e. Surfing

My new Aleutian paddle has almost same dimensions as my Greenland paddle.

I guess I should have educamated my self with some fancy booklearnin about what I ordered. ;-)

Before I do the Google thing could someone give me some 101 of Aleutian paddles?

  3. just returned from a long hiking trip cut short...my take:

I always have my radio leashed to my pfd and zipped in my pfd pocket. I keep it turned off unless I decide it be necessary to be turned on. The reason is basically I want to have the batteries when charged I really need to use the radio.

OTOH I don't make much fuss about it. If I am in the group and the general consensus is to have radios ON then I oblige.

From my own limited experience I have come into situations when radios were used and I did not hear the VHF conversation but I think a whistle would have been more effective to raise alert.

As far as group dynamics are concerned I always thought one should be within a line of sight and not within audible range. If so then I am guilty of separating from audible range of the entire collective almost every time I paddle.

  4. It's pretty common in small boats to 'sit on a bucket' - I'm sure there is a percentage of people who don't want that bucket smelling in their boat for the remainder of the trip and they just dump it. But situation like this probably doesn't explain your report. Seems like you have seen much more than a 'bucket' ;-)

  5. I usually overheat sooner than most people who I paddle with and In my experience there is no need to 'ventilate on hot days' when using a neoprene spray skirt. Maybe if we were paddling in Florida in the summer but in general the ocean water is cold or cooling and any issues with being hot occur above the waist line and not below the waist line.

..............................The Nylon are supposed to be better at ventilation on hot days than the Neoprene. ....................................

  6. Hi Gary

i paddled to Eagle last weekend with Yvonne for a day trip. Afterwards I was trying to get a link to the island from Googlemaps so that I could show my father where we paddled. When I closed up to Eagle on the computer I noticed the kayaks on shore and when I noticed Rogers kayak on the grass I realized I was looking at moment from our trip in May.

Rene, how and why did you come across this?

  7. That's it. You're looking at the right thing. The single kayak is Roger's (I knew I forgot someone) wooden kayak that he cracked while landing on the beach. I took my own photo here:

oh yeah and we also had Judy with us. My memory is slowly coming back.

Here is the photo from the satellite:

  8. Today I needed to get a googlemaps url to Eagle Island near Harpswell. We visited it yesterday. Nice place. When I located the island on google and when I clicked on the plus sign to get a close up of the island I saw a bunch of kayaks on the shores.

It did not take me too long to realize I was looking at a photo from our annual spring Jewell Island trip. Our day trip from Jewell was to Eagle - Whaleboat and back to Jewell. While at Eagle one of our paddlers cracked the hull on the rocks, hauled the kayak onto the grass for repairs. At that moment the satellite snapped the photo of Eagle Island and you are looking at it :-) You may not be able to get good enough close up but I can guarantee you that there are many of us looking back at you: Prudence, Doug, Rene, Warren, Peter, Leslie, Paul, Cath... I know I probably left someone out but my memory is not what it used to be :-)

  9. I just wanted to add that my post was not really intended to highlight a serious issue. I just thought it was a funny episode.

Hmm, this topic has morphed from funny comments by non-kayakers to serious issues. It that vein, there ought to be a law: 1) When a stinkpot is coming at you and you wave to get his attention he should be required to wave back to acknowledge that he sees you, or 2) he should immediately change course.

  10. I was paddling.between two small islets while a lobster boat pulled in from the side. As he sad hauling in the.trap on that motorized line I figured I had time to cross while he was hauling.

As I crossed I saw the guy and misinterpreted his body language for a greeting. I yelled back smiling:

Good morning! How are you doing!?

    He shouts back:

Im doing fuc$@&+g great! Now get the f##k out of my way before I f$$g run you over!!!

  11. wonderful report Prudence. From previous conversations I somewhat recall that there was a house dwelling on Whaleboat and the owner was not particularly well received with the locals across the water. One of those fateful nights, as the story goes, they set their house on fire. That was the last the island was inhabited. Walking from the meadow due south one can still find remnants of stone wall.

We did a little bit of bushwacking on Friday afternoon in the southern wooded section. It is littered with blowdowns. After some fun with mosquitoes and sharp pokey branches slicing our shins we called an end to this adventure. I'm not the bushwacking type I guess. I have yet to find a bushwacking endeavor that I enjoyed.

We had a decent fire going on Friday night and the sleeping arrangements were great.

The paddle back provided good enough fetch to surf the following seas for 30-40 minutes.

P.S. The reason I had a change of plans is that I was given a deep sea fishing fathers day present. Needless to say, I spent the boat ride there and back throwing up and seasick. lol. It's funny I never got seasick in a kayak but bigger boats have got me in the past.

  12. Done.

Heading out to paddle but will check emails and the board remotely...

Wow, you really jumped on that fast, thanks. Not to be a pain in the butt or to be too fussy, but if at least for now we could tweak the top bar that used to be black and change it to the same color of the bar that says "8 replies to this topic" located under the "Reply to this topic" button it would be a better choice of color not clashing with the other teals as "pinkpaddler" mentioned.

  13. I have made the top bar dark blue. If there is a more preffered hex color of dark blue then throw it in here. I have removed the Latest Files on the right which moves the calendar events to the top. Nice suggestion. I like that.

I am not sure what I can do with the events calendar shifting by a day. That is pretty freaky. I hope Jason can see whether this is an easy fix.

The View New Content might be tough to separate from the rest of the entries on the same line. changing the color for that bar will change them all. I will look into it when I get back from paddling Saturday night.
