Anybody know where this can drifted from?
It appears to be missing its 4 clappers-what happened?
What are the structural differences between "gong" and "bell"?
It was a Green "1" and given where it washed up was probably the one marking the entrance between crane and coffins.

One of the clappers was still intact (I think just about everyone in our group took a turn at ringing it!).

Seven of us headed out for a nice paddle today. We were pretty successful the first half of the trip using the wind to our advantage but after our break on the ocean side of Castle Neck, the last 4 miles felt like 8 with 20+ mph winds in our face.
Thanks for all that made this a memorable paddle.
The only down side or me was my waterproof camera finally died. Oh no! Out of 52 shots I salvaged only 9.
I'm glad I had my "Leica" camera stashed away. I pulled it out during the lunch break as we were treated to quite a spectacle.

Sorry to hear about your camera Doug. Number 12 is beautiful (perfect composition) could I get a full size image ?
Fantastic day, but that was a slog back. The screen shot here from Garmin Mapsource tells the story in numbers. The ~ 4 miles from our lunch stop took 2 hrs 20mins at an average speed of 2 mph (mph not knots!). At the beach my windmeter showed readings of sustained 15 kts wind, with a peak of 22 kts. I was tracking walkers on the beach and they easily outpaced us.
In any case the pain in the shoulders is being replaced by memories of white sand, clear skies and green blue sea.
thanks,
Barry.

QUOTE (Kevin B @ Mar 24 2010, 11:36 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>Our dog walkers are not available, so we'll be paddling locally. BIB time of 9am at Deveraux in Marblehead. Plan on paddling out to Tinkers, etc. depending on the group preferences. Return to Dev. around 1:00pm. Bring a helmet if you are planning to go near the rocks.

Check out this piece in today's NYTimes Magazine section. When will MA follow Florida'a lead and declare beachfront saved by taxpayer money to be open to the public for recreation?

Interesting article in today's globe about little neck, Ipswich.

an unusual tour through downtown Winchester will feature paddling through the depths of Cross St (try to spot the shipwrecked SUVs), through the treacherous rapids of Washington St (whitewater boats may be advised), and finishing up with a scenic tour of the high school. tonight or tomorrow, as conditions permit. watch here for meetup details.
Too funny! I was thinking the very same thing when we drove through on sunday. There was whitewater in the fells that you could see from south border road.
Instead I came home and spent the evening pumping out our basement.

This would be fun to kayak ...

QUOTE (Kevin B @ Jan 13 2010, 03:12 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>Would there be any interest in Wed. night pool sessions in or around Salem, say 6:30-8:30pm? The idea behind these pool sessions is to provide a location closer to Boston. This post is only meant to solicit interest. If these do run, then they would be typical NSPN pool sessions. Please post interest.
I would definitely get to a session or two on a wednesday.

QUOTE (Kevin B @ Jan 10 2010, 10:15 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>Obviously a long way off as far as weather is concerned, but long range temps look tolerable for that day. Anyone interested? Would prefer to stay on the North Shore for this trip. Post, pm or email interest.
Unfortunately I cant do friday, but Saturday looks like it will break 40. If there is interest I'll post a second trip.

http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachus...ng_to_kayakers/
The Boston Coast Guard office is urging people who get kayaks as holiday gifts to be careful if they plan to take a paddle, be it off the coast of New England or in an inland waterway. The Coast Guard says preholiday sales of kayaks and accessories are steady, and the weekend weather forecast in parts of the region calls for temperatures in the 40s. Al Johnson, Coast Guard recreational boating specialist, said anyone paddling this time of year should wear a dry suit or full wet suit as well as an approved life jacket. He also urged new kayakers to take a safety course. (AP)

Gene, great topic for a thread. I envy you retired guys with lots of free time :-) Despite my other commitments I managed to put in just shy of my 300 mile goal for the season. I began and ended the season with a Boston harbor paddle and in between the high lights included the open water weekend with Carl Ladd (organized by David Lewis) at Osprey, the BCU 3* coaching weekend with John Carmody (facilitated by Kevin), the two circumnavigations of Cape Ann (including one at night with Christopher), paddling in Maine (especially the circumnavigation of Southport Island) , playing in conditions in Ipswich bay and my first fiberglass repair. Thanks to all for your company, help and advice.

my sentiments exactly. I did so many conference calls today the battery in my wireless handset went dead.

I was thinking that Peddocks should be renamed the "Island of the many headlands" or "Island of false corners". There were at least 3 occasions where I thought we should be around this blankety-blank island by now!
I just went back and checked the chart. We paddled 2.8 miles to get around an island that is 1.5 miles long (as the crow flies)!
-
If you look at Barry's trace you can see that we travelled about 1.5 mi from the north tip of Peddock's SW to the tip of Prince Head. Then turning NW and finally almost due north to get around West Head (the SW corner of Peddock's) we went another mile. Without consulting a chart this mile seemed like the other side of the Island to me. As Emily Litella was wont to say, "Never mind".

Gean's trip looks suited for wind conditions, plus more to look at. The ride through the gut, 1 hr. before low may be fun with no other boats to contend with. Island's are full of history, bring ye camera. I'm in.
Excellent! The only person we are missing is our resident Harbor Islands historian, Marc Parsons. Marc, what say you ?

OK, I'm 90% in. Will check the posts later. Prefer the more in-harbor route. Looks interesting to me plus I never paddled this area. Hope the water is clean.
Doug
Would be great to have you and your camera along
Hope the water is clean.Yes, thanks to the $3.8bn facility we will be launching next to!

If the west winds stay strong going out to the Graves will entail a difficult slog back. I have an alternative: Leave from the north side of Deer's head south and stay in the lee of Long Island, continue south and round Peddock's (still in the lee). Good place to stop for lunch! Through Hull Gut heading north and stay in the lee of Georges and Lovell. Back to Deer. 13+ mi. Ebb tide is about 11:00AM and if we go through Hull Gut at approx. 1:30PM we should be safe. Whaddya think?
Hi Gene:
Sounds like a prudent plan and works for me. So we are confirmed for Gene, Ernie, Bob, Scott, Kevin (?) and me. Any other takers ?
see you in the AM, (Ernie, you going to swing by ?)

What time and location of put-in Barry?
