  1. Sunday 11/8/09 The :notWorthy: wife has given me the OK! :woohoo: Nothing long just playing in the rocks, on the water by 10:00. Put in on beach at Ocean St. as it off season parking. Level 3 paddle, bring a helmet as I hope to be playing around in the rocks.

    Ross

I'll try to make it. Is this the launch ?

  2. Ernie,

In pondering your recent foray into NSPN marketing and the infamous resulting tail-flag thread, it occurred to me that perhaps we should consider likewise branding of so-called pee bottles. These unfortunate losses at sea would at least have the benefit of spreading the good work of our organization. Unlike with the tail-flags and especially among those males of age 50+, there will be no argument as to the criticality of these devices for paddling safety and comfort!

    Bob

How many new members has this thread cost us ? :)

  3. Gene called, and we answered. Gene, Barry, Bob (Salem), Bob (Budd), Blaine, Kevin and I enjoyed the trip from Tucks Pt to Kettle and back. Poking along the shore we found enough excitement for a forecasted calm day. Some of the pics I took are here:

    Phil

    Thanks Phil!

I was having a blast playing behind that rock as the waves converged around it and then shortly after you had moved on one came in at least twice the size of the pictured one and I had to paddle like hell to get over it. And like a fool I had just swapped out my helmet as it was giving me a serious head ache.

    Barry.

  4. Darn... can't; have appt w/ folks from Rockport. Figures, eh?

See you at Tuck's next week probably.

    Ern

That makes 3 confirmed and Kevin might make it as well. Gene, are we still on ?

    Barry.

  5. Meet at Tuck's Point 11:00AM BIB 11:30AM Small wave heights with wind NW strong to moderate getting weaker in afternoon. Chance of some rain. RSVP here please.

    See you there!

    thanks,

    Barry.

  6. Predicted warm (65F) and mostly sunny, 13kn SSW. Last chance for a summery (wetsuit) paddle?

Too early in the morn for novel ideas, so maybe aunch off Lane's again SW to play off Crane's?...or Tuck's Point SW to the islands, or...?

I'm up for either Tucks or Crane's again. Looks like temps are going to get into the 70's but it is going to be windy.

    Barry.

  7. On Sunday we launched from Cape Porpoise towards Goat Island to place a new cache on the island. I know we have some geocachers among our members ...

Nice pictures! we paddled here in August it's a stunning area. Did you meet the caretaker and her dogs ? Very nice and welcoming person.

How old is your son and at what age did he start paddling ? I plan to buy a tandem for next year to take my 5 year old boy out.

    Barry.

  8. Zipper is a term that I have seen used but I think that the official term is confused sea.

"Zipper" would definitely describe it well; basically the waves were wrapping around the sandbar that had emerged and colliding on the other side. It was a lot of fun, at one point about 8 of the 9 of us were in the one section.

    Barry.

  9. 9 of us ventured out of Lanes Cove Sunday 10/25.

    Doug

Thanks for posting the pictures Doug and to Gene for initiating the trip. It was a challenging but fun trip. ~14 knots of wind from the NW in the morning, piling up the chop on the breakwater at Lanes (as Ernie predicted). The sight of the surge coming through the harbor entrance would definitely give pause, but all handled it well. The original plan was to head directly towards the Annisquam but it quickly became apparent that it would be easier to take it on the nose and head straight for Cranes by way of Green "1" and "AR" bell.

Playing in the clapotis off the end of that sandbar was a blast. As dramatic as surf but with out the same risk of capsize!

8.4 nautical miles (felt like 15!)

    Barry.

  10. Coastal graphical NOAA forecast is 2' to 3' and strong W winds. Magicseaweed has maybe 3' surf. LT is around 11:30AM Meet at 11:00AM either Lanes Cove or Tuck's Point. Both put-ins avoid low tide walks and offer a multitude of paddling options and several bail out points. RSVP here and with suggestions.

How about out of lanes and around Cranes? which would provide a good section out of the wind and trip total lenght of ~ 15 statute miles.

  11. PFD Use Rates by Boat Type

According to the annual observational study published by the U.S. Coast Guard, in 2004 kayakers had a higher wear rate (87%) than any other type of watercraft (including canoes, 27%) except personal watercraft (jet skis, 95%). The overall PFD wear rate for the general adult boating population was lower than 25%, . Powerboaters who, according to the Coast Guard, account for 75% of boating fatalities, have adult PFD wear rates under 5%. Again, that's five percent!

These data indicate that this bill discriminates against a class of boaters who are already wearing PFDs at significantly higher rates than the average.

    Fatalities by Boat Type

According to U.S. Coast Guard statistics, 75 people have died in boating-related accidents in Massachusetts coastal waters since 1998. Half of those (37) were in powerboats. Canoes accounted for 18 deaths, and kayaks significantly fewer (8).

Seems the General Court should be legislating for safety in ALL types of boats. And, hey, let's give our fellow boaters on jet skis credit for wearing PFDs. Just shows how a norm can get established in any recreational group.

A similar report was done for Maine "Paddle Sport fatalities 2000 - 2007"

During 2000--2007, a total of 38 paddle sports fatalities in 37 incidents were identified in Maine. Twenty-nine (76%) of the decedents were Maine residents; eight were residents of other states, and one was a resident of another country. Paddle sports fatalities amounted to 46% of the 82 total boating deaths during this period in Maine (Figure). Twenty-two (58%) of the 38 deaths were associated with canoes, 12 (32%) with kayaks, and four (10%) with rafts (Table)

    Also from the Editorial Note:

In the United States, during 1999--2006, the percentage of adults using PFDs was estimated at 9% for all vessels, 23% for canoes, and 85% for kayaks (3). In Maine, PFD use in paddle sports is mandated only for children aged <10 years, and noncompliance results in a $50 fine (4).† Increased use of PFDs might be encouraged by education, enforcement, and incentives, such as programs that loan PFDs to paddle sports participants at a minimal charge or for free (5).

You can imagine the psychological effect of this legislation ... "no you dont need to wear your pfd, they're only required for kayakers"

  12. These sails were incredibly fast to put up/take down.

Laurie demonstrated this when we were hit by a sudden and strong wind gust on the beam; he took it down with one hand in about 2 seconds. He has a neat sleeve on the foredeck into which the whole assembly slides. I was also impressed with the range of points of sail it supports, almost up to close hauled. He stressed the importance of having a deck cleat to cleat off the main line for sail position (main sheet on a sail boat) so that you dont have to tend it and can continue to paddle; this would suggest the possibility of using a stern rudder stroke to maintain direction.
