  1. Meet at the small beach at Harris Island Road. http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=4126971 10:30AM BIB 11:00AM LT is 12:10PM ride out to the ocean on the last of the outgoing tide and travel North to Long Sands. Magic Seaweed forecast currently is for 1 to 1.5' and 10sec. periods, perfect for mild surfing, bracing, etc.(helmets and immersion gear necessary). Paddle up to Nubble light house and return to the harbor with the incoming tide. NOAA forecast for Sunday is mild conditions. RSVP here. I will monitor forecasts the rest of the week and update if necessary.

    Hi Gene,

very interested. what time do you think we would get back ?

    thanks,

    Barry.

  2. Rescheduled to Sunday 10/24/2010

The general forecast is for small craft advisories through Saturday evening. While the Coastal forecast is not as severe it has been updated a bit to 3' waves and 19k wind and 20+ gusts. Given that we don't have any confirmed paddlers for tomorrow at this time save myself, I'm rescheduling this trip to Sunday: Forecast is benign. Meet at 12:30PM Kittery wharf, launch at 1:00PM. HT is 12:15PM There may be enough water to circumnavigate Gerrish/Cutts. If we want to be certain we can move the launch to Seapoint Beach (<10min. drive). Or paddle North up the coast to York Harbor. Or leave from the wharf and cross the Piscataqua over to Rye Rocks for guess what? RSVP here.

    Hi Gene,

Reschedule makes sense, unfortunately I can't do sunday.

    Barry.

  3. HT is noon. Meet at Kittery Wharf 10:30AM BIB 11:00AM paddle counter clockwise. Current NOAA forecast: 2' wave height, 15K wind from the West with gusts up to 20+. This is a Level 3 trip. Ocean side does have several beaches to bail out and at least half the trip is within the shelter of Chauncey Creek and the Rachel Carson preserve. Under 10 miles round trip unless we want to poke around the cove and harbor. Good day for the dry suit and warm gear.

If parking is a problem we can drop the boats off at the wharf and park a 1/4 mile up the road at the Mitchell school. I can provide shuttle service!

    RSVP here if interested.

I'm very interested. Need to see if I can reschedule a dental apt. :-); will confirm a little later.

  4. Launch: Ocean St, Manchester MA

    Time: 10am

    Low Tide: 7:12am

    Level : 3

    Marine Weather

Now that it's october the rabble are allowed park at this great little launch giving us access to the lovely Manchester, MA coast.

Forecast for sunday is a little iffy; but if it calms down anyone up for a paddle ? Depending on conditions we could go south west to the Miseries or north east to the dogbar for a distance of about 10-12 miles. Some nice rock play along the way, bring your helmets.

  5. What a wonderful adventure for the boys and these are the experiences that lay the groundwork for staying connected to your son as the years pass.

    Great photos.

How can you help but smile.

Rene thanks for posting the report and providing the motivation to make the trip a reality. It was a terrific weekend and pretty easy to put together. It's hard to believe such a beautiful place is less than 2 hours away and the squam lakes association makes it easy with a great launch, parking etc. well worth the slightly expensive campsite fees. Also thanks to Ed Lawson and Gary York for the advice, tips and cautions.

It was great to see the boys bond despite the difference in ages; Ronan is still talking about it and what trip we are going to do next.

  6. The Epic! Definitely the Epic. ;)

Oh Leon! We could ahave used EFGKT yesterday at Squam Lake; we had surfed almost downwind to Bowman island when we got a cell phone call with a plaintive request to pick up another young whippersnapper, who wanted to join the camping fun, at the dock at SLA.I dutifully headed out to go pick him up but the 15 knot wind on the beam and my lightly loaded tandem being paddled solo was just not up to the job. We ended up calling a "real" water taxi to deliver the young lad.

  7. A little off topic but at the kayak sumposium in Bar Harbor there was a woman from Quebec with a full sea kayak on a smart car. It looked like she may have had a custom eye bolt attached on the front for the forward tie down and then a hitch extension on the back (almost like a thule hitch bike rack) that extended back a foot or two and up to support the stern. It was pretty impressive!

  8. A correction! Gary pointed out that the launch is at the Squam Lake Association Resources Center. Route 3 in Holderness,NH

This map shows B (launch) and C (Bowman Island).

    thanks Gary!

Some more information for what should be a fun trip!

Map showing launch and Bowman Island.

    Camping Information (Squam Lake Assoc.)

    Butts in Boat time: 10am

Parking: You can drive to the launch to unload then back up to the main parking lot to park.

At a minimum we will paddle to Bowman, set up camp and then optionally take a paddle in the lake time and weather permitting. Camp fire wood can be purchased at the resources center. I plan to depart early on sunday morning (9am) as Ronan has soccer practice at noon. With enough people we could form a pod for a Sunday morning paddle depending on interest. There are privies on the island but no other infrastructure (tables, water etc.). There will be a small cost which is dependent on the number of people.

let me know if you are coming along.

  10. Brambor (Rene) and I are paddling from the Squam Lake Assoc Resources Center Saturday morning (10am) with our respective kids for a kayak camping trip. Only the group site on Bowman island was available which I have booked so we could accomodate up to another 8 people.

West Isles, Bay of Fundy Trip

Here is the link to the trip report for my recent excursion to the Bay of Fundy. In some ways it was an easy trip, in some ways there were unexpected challenges. The Bay of Fundy definitely came through with lots of current. Lots. Also whales (no photos, sadly) and a rich diversity of sea life.

Wonderful trip. Please enjoy the photos!

Thanks Kate for another wonderful trip report; the pictures are stunning.

  12. Hi Dan:

You can put in at the boat launch near the Medford boat club. It's between the lower and upper Mystic lake; there is now a path/steps to carry down to the lower lake and then it's a short paddle accross the lower lake and down the mystic river.

I'd like to do this paddle as well some time but I am in Maine this weekend.

    Barry.

  13. Hi Guys,

I'm looking for some suggestions for put ins that allow access to Thatchers Island without too long a paddle. Also, if possible it needs to be somewhere we could leave a truck overnight.

    Thanks in advance.

I had done some research on this recently because we were planning a kids camping trip to Thachers. There is actually a small boat ramp right in rockport itself. I have linked to it here and confirmed with the parking clerk that you can park overnight on any street which is not metered parking. There is room for one or two cars on the ramp itself to unload and then you would have to go a couple of streets away to find an unmetered spot.

The weather was threatening so we just made a day trip of it, but the ramp process was straight forward with the advantage of only a very short carry. We found metered spots just a street away on a busy saturday morning.

    Barry.
