  2. Anyone interested in paddling out of Portsmouth on Sat let me know. Destination to be determined by response. Post or e-mail your interest. Put-in probably at Odiorne Point, Rye (free parking on road) Gerry gs01 at verizon dot net
  3. Maybe Friday depending on my work load. I'll post if I can go.
  4. Kevin I could consider blowing off the end of the work day if you could do Portsmouth. 3-4 o'clock out of Ports could definitely work. let me know Gerry
  5. Hi Kevin Welcome! In addition to leasing be sure to take advantage of the weeknight practice sessions offered at various locations hosted by NSPN volunteers. Not only is this great for improving skills but it's a chance to talk shop and try other boats. Racks really depend on your skills and ability to load/lift/haul. I have an Outback and use only foam blocks and rope (truckers hitch is a great knot to know) I've hauled up to 3 boats on the Outback rack with rope for the tie down with no problems. On long hauls I add a line to the bow and tie it to the tow hooks under the front bumper. I'm not dissing Thule or Yakima or straps; this is just what works for me....and my cheap yankee ways. Gerry
  6. He should check out oneoceankayaks.com I built the Expedition Sport and am very pleased with it; the plans and e-mail support were great. Having never been in a kayak I chose this design based on its description and feel it was a good choice for a beginner. The Cape Ann Expedition is the larger version for larger paddlers. I live in Portsmouth so if he'd like to see/try it just e-mail me at gs01@verizon.net I'm currently working on a new boat so he could also see a work in progress. Gerry Smith
  7. Judy Also check Allegiant Air out of Pease in Portsmouth. My wife & daughter went to Sanford (Orlando) last fall for $49 Gerry
  8. I'm in the process of building another wood strip/fiberglass kayak. Many people have expressed interest, curiosity, envy? etc. If there is enough interest I'd be glad to have a "shoptalk" session over a cup of coffee/tea in my shop, see the work in progress, answer questions, etc. The forms are set, I just ripped the strips and shaped the cove and bead and will hopefully start assembly soon. If there is enough interest we'll set a date for a group get together; or I'd be glad to meet one on one. This could be combined with a paddle afterwards in the great variety of water/conditions around Portsmouth. Post interest or e-mail me directly Gerry Smith Portsmouth Looks like this Saturday (Feb 4) would be good for me. I'll plan to be here in the morning working on the boat so anyone interested should just come by around 10:00 am. Bring your gear and we'll do a paddle afterwards. If you're interested but can't make it Sat. just let me know and we'll set something up. Call or e-mail for directions or mapquest Gerry Smith 306 South St Portsmouth, NH 603 431 5406 gws7983 at yahoo dot com an rsvp might be good just in case
  9. Sliding down the face of a mountain on 2 sticks in the middle of winter.....Rational? I'll take the warmth of the kayak cacoon at sea level. See you at the beach this morning Gerry Smith
  10. I paddle year round whenever possible. Winter is the best time up here in the cold north country of new hampshire. Gerry Smith
  11. I'd be interested in joining the Winthrop launch gang. Gerry Smith
  12. Peirce Island has a $5 launch/parking fee but it is a good launch site. If boat traffic is heavy ofr the tide is still in bound then going out Little Harbor and around New Castle might be a bit easier. Also the town launch in Kittery is a good (free)launch. A little tricky to find. It's at Traip Academy on Williams Ave. Follow Rt 103 thru town, the road then turns right at a gas station and Traip is the first right after this turn. Granite marker on 103.
  13. haven't heard otherwise so I assume it's still on. I was there last week and there was no mention of a cancellation.
  14. tuna and relish is the only way to go... except when there is a little mayo and onion and pepper to add as well. But tuna on graham crackers (as my daughter has resorted to at times) is totally disgusting
  15. leslie, you might want to get in touch with Neil Sheehan from Alfresco Adventures in Hampton, NH. http://www.alfrescoadventures.com He put a trip together last year and is repeating it this year. He should be able to put you in touch with outfitters. The main reason for the sot popularity is the hot Hawaii sun; it would just be to hot to sit in a closed cockpit gerry smith
  16. I need to stay local today. Thanks Enjoy Gerry
  17. Jason I have no specific plan but I was hoping to get out locally (Portsmouth) and enjoy the spring weather. I'll plan on putting in 11:00ish if you (or anyone else) would like to join me. Looks to be a beautiful day. Piscataqua River, New Castle, Little Harbor, Garrish Island? RSVP here Gerry Smith
  18. Kudos to Bob & Karen. I took their rolling workshop last nite. Having never rolled before or even tried, Bob confirmed that I did roll without his assistance. Both a C/C and sweep. Great instructors! Gerry
  19. Sounds like a great plan to me. Count me in Gerry
  20. I'd also would like to add my thanks to all involved in the TLT workshops....even the %?$! teabags. Truly a great program! Thanks
  21. Count me in if it happens... if the price is right!
  22. I'll be showing up to play, learn and provide support. See ya'll at 10:00 Gerry Smith Wood Stripper
  23. For me time and distance have been an issue. I have wanted to take advantage of the Danvers sessions but tying up an entire evening for paddling after I've been out paddling all afternoon is testing the limits of familial harmony. I try to get out every weekend afternoon even if only for an hour, so trying to do 2 paddling activities in the same weekend is risking spousal abuse.
  24. Thanks Shane....great idea count me in!
  25. I've given up the guilt trip on myself and just don't "exercise". I do try to walk rather than drive, use stairs instead of elevators, etc. Paddling is the best exercise I do to get in shape for....paddling. I go out as often as I can and usually paddle against the tidal currents of the Piscataqua River...don't cover much distance but it's one tough workout. I've found that 20 degrees + (cloudy or sunny) is still quite warm on these "workouts". I wouldn't hesitate to go out below 20 degrees but wind and other considerations would definitely come in to play.
